Shared-Decision Making Committee (SDMC)
What is the SDMC?
The Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC) at Benavidez Elementary is a dedicated team of educators, families, and community partners committed to strengthening student achievement. Through active collaboration, the committee contributes valuable input and guidance on essential areas such as budgeting, staffing, curriculum design, campus operations, and professional development. Aligned with Texas state law and HISD Board Policy, SDMC ensures that decisions are both strategic and unified—reflecting the diverse voices of the school community
Membership & Elections
Faculty and community representatives are chosen through staff elections. All members of the Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC) serve staggered two-year terms to maintain continuity. Elections are conducted each May via secret ballot. In the event of a vacancy within the first nine weeks of the school year, the position may be filled by the runner-up from the previous election. After this window, a new election is held to appoint a replacement.
Meetings & Participation
The Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC) convenes on a quarterly basis, with additional meetings scheduled as needed to address timely issues. Supporting the SDMC's efforts are standing committees, which gather as appropriate to explore specific topics in greater depth. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in these committees, helping to foster collaborative leadership and strengthen the school community.
Decision-Making Process
The Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC) aims to make decisions through consensus—defined as broad agreement and a collective readiness to proceed after all perspectives have been thoughtfully considered. When consensus isn't possible, the matter may be revisited for further study or resolved by majority vote. The Head of School facilitates the SDMC process and holds the authority to make final determinations, including exercising veto power when necessary.
