Subsequent commits will move the backend-specific logic of object streaming into their respective subsystems. These subsystems have gotten rid of `the_repository` already, but we still use it in two locations in the streaming subsystem. Prepare for the move by fixing those two cases. Converting the logic in `open_istream_pack_non_delta()` is trivial as we already got the object database as input. But for `stream_blob_to_fd()` we have to add a new parameter to make it accessible. So, as we already have to adjust all callers anyway, rename the function to `odb_stream_blob_to_fd()` to indicate it's part of the object subsystem. In b0b910e052 (cat-file.c: add batch handling for submodules, 2025-06-02), we began handling submodule entries specially when batching cat-file like so: $ echo :sha1collisiondetection | git.compile cat-file --batch-check 855827c583bc30645ba427885caa40c5b81764d2 submodule Commit b0b910e052 notes that submodules are handled differently than non-existent objects, which print "<given-name> <type>", since there is (a) no object to resolve the OID of in the first place, and as commit b0b910e052 notes, (b) for submodules in particular, it is useful to know what commit it points at without having to spawn another Git process. That commit does so by calling report_object_status() and passing in "oid_to_hex(&data->oid)" for the "obj_name" parameter. This is unnecessary, however, since report_object_status() will do the same automatically if given a NULL "obj_name" argument. That behavior dates back to 6a951937ae (cat-file: add --batch-all-objects option, 2015-06-22), so rely on that instead of having the caller open-code that part of report_object_status(). 2025-07-23config: drop `git_config()` wrapperPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
In 036876a1067 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global repository variable explicit at the callsite. Follow through with that intent and remove `git_config()`. All callsites are adjusted so that they use `repo_config(the_repository, ...)` instead. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. The iterators for loose objects still rely on `the_repository`. Refactor them: - `for_each_loose_file_in_objdir()` is refactored so that the caller is now expected to pass an `odb_source` as parameter instead of the path to that source. Furthermore, it is renamed accordingly to `for_each_loose_file_in_source()`. - `for_each_loose_object()` is refactored to take in an object database now and calls the above function in a loop. Furthermore though, the old name didn't really describe very well what this function actually does, which is to walk down any commit and tag objects until an object of the required type has been found. This is generally referred to as "peeling", so the new name should be way more descriptive. No compatibility wrapper is introduced as the function is not used a lot throughout our codebase. 2025-06-03cat-file.c: add batch handling for submodulesVictoria Dye1-1/+4
When an object specification is passed to 'cat-file --batch[-check]' referring to a submodule (e.g. 'HEAD:path/to/my/submodule'), the current behavior of the command is to print the "missing" error message. However, it is often valuable for callers to distinguish between paths that are actually missing and "the submodule tree entry exists, but the object does not exist in the repository". To disambiguate without needing to invoke a separate Git process (e.g. 'ls-tree'), print the message "<oid> submodule" for such objects instead of "<object> missing". In addition to the change from "missing" to "submodule", the new message differs from the old in that it always prints the resolved tree entry's OID, rather than the input object specification. Note that this implementation maintains a distinction between submodules where the commit OID is not present in the repo, and submodules where the commit OID *is* present; the former will now print "<object> submodule", but the latter will still print the full object content. 2025-05-16cat-file: make --allow-unknown-type a noopJeff King1-13/+5
The cat-file command has some minor support for handling objects with "unknown" types. I.e., strings that are not "blob", "commit", "tree", or "tag". In theory this could be used for debugging or experimenting with extensions to Git. But in practice this support is not very useful: 1. You can get the type and size of such objects, but nothing else. Not even the contents! 2. Only loose objects are supported, since packfiles use numeric ids for the types, rather than strings. 3. Likewise you cannot ever transfer objects between repositories, because they cannot be represented in the packfiles used for the on-the-wire protocol. The support for these unknown types complicates the object-parsing code, and has led to bugs such as b748ddb7a4 (unpack_loose_header(): fix infinite loop on broken zlib input, 2025-02-25). So let's drop it. The first step is to remove the user-facing parts, which are accessible only via cat-file. This is technically backwards-incompatible, but given the limitations listed above, these objects couldn't possibly be useful in any workflow. However, we can't just rip out the option entirely. That would hurt a caller who ran: git cat-file -t --allow-unknown-object <oid> and fed it normal, well-formed objects. There --allow-unknown-type was doing nothing, but we wouldn't want to start bailing with an error. So to protect any such callers, we'll retain --allow-unknown-type as a noop. The code change is fairly small (but we'll able to clean up more code in follow-on patches). The test updates drop any use of the option. We still retain tests that feed the broken objects to cat-file without --allow-unknown-type, as we should continue to confirm that those objects are rejected. Note that in one spot we can drop a layer of loop, re-indenting the body; viewing the diff with "-w" helps there. 2025-04-29treewide: convert users of `repo_has_object_file()` to `has_object()`Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+2
As the comment of `repo_has_object_file()` and its `_with_flags()` variant tells us, these functions are considered to be deprecated in favor of `has_object()`. There are a couple of slight benefits in favor of the replacement: - The new function has a short-and-sweet name. - More explicit defaults: `has_object()` doesn't fetch missing objects via promisor remotes, and neither does it reload packfiles if an object wasn't found by default. This ensures that it becomes immediately obvious when a simple object existence check may result in expensive actions. Most importantly though, it is confusing that we have two sets of functions that ultimately do the same thing, but with different defaults. Start sunsetting `repo_has_object_file()` and its `_with_flags()` sibling by replacing all callsites with `has_object()`: - `repo_has_object_file(...)` is equivalent to `has_object(..., HAS_OBJECT_RECHECK_PACKED | HAS_OBJECT_FETCH_PROMISOR)`. - `repo_has_object_file_with_flags(..., OBJECT_INFO_QUICK | OBJECT_INFO_SKIP_FETCH_OBJECT)` is equivalent to `has_object(..., 0)`. - `repo_has_object_file_with_flags(..., OBJECT_INFO_SKIP_FETCH_OBJECT)` is equivalent to `has_object(..., HAS_OBJECT_RECHECK_PACKED)`. - `repo_has_object_file_with_flags(..., OBJECT_INFO_QUICK)` is equivalent to `has_object(..., HAS_OBJECT_FETCH_PROMISOR)`. 2025-04-07builtin/cat-file: use bitmaps to efficiently filter by object typePatrick Steinhardt1-5/+37
While it is now possible to filter objects by type, this mechanism is for now mostly a convenience. Most importantly, we still have to iterate through the whole packfile to find all objects of a specific type. This can be prohibitively expensive depending on the size of the packfiles. It isn't really possible to do better than this when only considering a packfile itself, as the order of objects is not fixed. But when we have a packfile with a corresponding bitmap, either because the packfile itself has one or because the multi-pack index has a bitmap for it, then we can use these bitmaps to improve the runtime. While bitmaps are typically used to compute reachability of objects, they also contain one bitmap per object type that encodes which object has what type. So instead of reading through the whole packfile(s), we can use the bitmaps and iterate through the type-specific bitmap. Typically, only a subset of packfiles will have a bitmap. But this isn't really much of a problem: we can use bitmaps when available, and then use the non-bitmap walk for every packfile that isn't covered by one. Overall, this leads to quite a significant speedup depending on how many objects of a certain type exist. The following benchmarks have been executed in the Chromium repository, which has a 50GB packfile with almost 25 million objects. As expected, there isn't really much of a change in performance without an object filter: Benchmark 1: cat-file with no-filter (revision = HEAD~) Time (mean ± σ): 89.675 s ± 4.527 s [User: 40.807 s, System: 10.782 s] Range (min … max): 83.052 s … 96.084 s 10 runs Benchmark 2: cat-file with no-filter (revision = HEAD) Time (mean ± σ): 88.991 s ± 2.488 s [User: 42.278 s, System: 10.305 s] Range (min … max): 82.843 s … 91.271 s 10 runs Summary cat-file with no-filter (revision = HEAD) ran 1.01 ± 0.06 times faster than cat-file with no-filter (revision = HEAD~) We still have to scan through all objects as we yield all of them, so using the bitmap in this case doesn't really buy us anything. What is noticeable in this benchmark is that we're I/O-bound, not CPU-bound, as can be seen from the user/system runtimes, which combined are way lower than the overall benchmarked runtime. But when we do use a filter we can see a significant improvement: Benchmark 1: cat-file with filter=object:type=commit (revision = HEAD~) Time (mean ± σ): 86.444 s ± 4.081 s [User: 36.830 s, System: 11.312 s] Range (min … max): 80.305 s … 93.104 s 10 runs Benchmark 2: cat-file with filter=object:type=commit (revision = HEAD) Time (mean ± σ): 2.089 s ± 0.015 s [User: 1.872 s, System: 0.207 s] Range (min … max): 2.073 s … 2.119 s 10 runs Summary cat-file with filter=object:type=commit (revision = HEAD) ran 41.38 ± 1.98 times faster than cat-file with filter=object:type=commit (revision = HEAD~) This is because we don't have to scan through all packfiles anymore, but can instead directly look up relevant objects. 2025-04-07builtin/cat-file: wire up an option to filter objectsPatrick Steinhardt1-4/+32
In batch mode, git-cat-file(1) enumerates all objects and prints them by iterating through both loose and packed objects. This works without considering their reachability at all, and consequently most options to filter objects as they exist in e.g. git-rev-list(1) are not applicable. In some situations it may still be useful though to filter objects based on properties that are inherent to them. This includes the object size as well as its type. Such a filter already exists in git-rev-list(1) with the `--filter=` command line option. While this option supports a couple of filters that are not applicable to our usecase, some of them are quite a neat fit. Wire up the filter as an option for git-cat-file(1). This allows us to reuse the same syntax as in git-rev-list(1) so that we don't have to reinvent the wheel. For now, we die when any of the filter options has been passed by the user, but they will be wired up in subsequent commits. Further note that the filters that we are about to introduce don't significantly speed up the runtime of git-cat-file(1). While we can skip emitting a lot of objects in case they are uninteresting to us, the majority of time is spent reading the packfile, which is bottlenecked by I/O and not the processor. This will change though once we start to make use of bitmaps, which will allow us to skip reading the whole packfile. We have multiple callsites that report the status of an object, for example when the objec tis missing or its name is ambiguous. We're about to add a couple more such callsites to report on "excluded" objects. Prepare for this by introducing a new function `report_object_status()` that encapsulates the functionality. Note that this function also flushes stdout, which is a requirement so that request-response style batched modes can learn about the status before proceeding to the next object. We already flush correctly at all existing callsites, even though the flush in `batch_one_object()` only comes after the switch statement. That flush is now redundant, and we could in theory deduplicate it by moving it into all branches that don't use `report_object_status()`. But that doesn't quite feel sensible: - The duplicate flush should ultimately just be a no-op for us and thus shouldn't impact performance significantly. - By keeping the flush in `report_object_status()` we ensure that all future callers get semantics correct. This change affects how 'git cat-file' works with the index when specifying an object with the ":<path>" syntax (which will give file contents from the index). 'git cat-file' expands a sparse index to a full index any time contents are requested from the index by specifying an object with the ":<path>" syntax. This is true even when the requested file is part of the sparse index, and results in much slower 'git cat-file' operations when working within the sparse index. Mark 'git cat-file' as not needing a full index, so that you only pay the cost of expanding the sparse index to a full index when you request a file outside of the sparse index. The DESCRIPTION's "first form" is actually the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th form in SYNOPSIS, the "second form" is the 4th one. Interestingly, this state of affairs was introduced in 97fe7250753b (cat-file docs: fix SYNOPSIS and "-h" output, 2021-12-28) with the claim of "Now the two will match again." ("the two" being DESCRIPTION and SYNOPSIS)... The description also suffers from other correctness and clarity issues, e.g., the "first form" paragraph discusses -p, -s and -t, but leaves out -e, which is included in the corresponding SYNOPSIS section; the second paragraph mentions <format>, which doesn't occur in SYNOPSIS at all, and of the three batch options, really only describes the behavior of --batch-check. Also the mention of "drivers" seems an implementation detail not adding much clarity in a short summary (and isn't expanded upon in the rest of the man page, either). Rather than trying to maintain one-to-one (or N-to-M) correspondence between the DESCRIPTION and SYNOPSIS forms, creating duplication and providing opportunities for error, shorten the former into a concise summary describing the two general modes of operation: batch and non-batch, leaving details to the subsequent manual sections. 2023-06-28config: add ctx arg to config_fn_tGlen Choo1-2/+3
Add a new "const struct config_context *ctx" arg to config_fn_t to hold additional information about the config iteration operation. config_context has a "struct key_value_info kvi" member that holds metadata about the config source being read (e.g. what kind of config source it is, the filename, etc). In this series, we're only interested in .kvi, so we could have just used "struct key_value_info" as an arg, but config_context makes it possible to add/adjust members in the future without changing the config_fn_t signature. We could also consider other ways of organizing the args (e.g. moving the config name and value into config_context or key_value_info), but in my experiments, the incremental benefit doesn't justify the added complexity (e.g. a config_fn_t will sometimes invoke another config_fn_t but with a different config value). In subsequent commits, the .kvi member will replace the global "struct config_reader" in config.c, making config iteration a global-free operation. It requires much more work for the machinery to provide meaningful values of .kvi, so for now, merely change the signature and call sites, pass NULL as a placeholder value, and don't rely on the arg in any meaningful way. Most of the changes are performed by contrib/coccinelle/config_fn_ctx.pending.cocci, which, for every config_fn_t: - Modifies the signature to accept "const struct config_context *ctx" - Passes "ctx" to any inner config_fn_t, if needed - Adds UNUSED attributes to "ctx", if needed Most config_fn_t instances are easily identified by seeing if they are called by the various config functions. Most of the remaining ones are manually named in the .cocci patch. Manual cleanups are still needed, but the majority of it is trivial; it's either adjusting config_fn_t that the .cocci patch didn't catch, or adding forward declarations of "struct config_context ctx" to make the signatures make sense. The non-trivial changes are in cases where we are invoking a config_fn_t outside of config machinery, and we now need to decide what value of "ctx" to pass. These cases are: - trace2/tr2_cfg.c:tr2_cfg_set_fl() This is indirectly called by git_config_set() so that the trace2 machinery can notice the new config values and update its settings using the tr2 config parsing function, i.e. tr2_cfg_cb(). - builtin/checkout.c:checkout_main() This calls git_xmerge_config() as a shorthand for parsing a CLI arg. This might be worth refactoring away in the future, since git_xmerge_config() can call git_default_config(), which can do much more than just parsing. Handle them by creating a KVI_INIT macro that initializes "struct key_value_info" to a reasonable default, and use that to construct the "ctx" arg. Several builtins depend on being able to disable the replace references so we actually operate on each object individually. These currently do so by directly mutating the 'read_replace_refs' global. A future change will move this global into a different place, so it will be necessary to change all of these lines. However, we can simplify that transition by abstracting the purpose of these global assignments with a method call. We will need to keep this read_replace_refs global forever, as we want to make sure that we never use replace refs throughout the life of the process if this method is called. Future changes may present a repository-scoped version of the variable to represent that repository's core.useReplaceRefs config value, but a zero-valued read_replace_refs will always override such a setting. 2023-06-12cat-file: add option '-Z' that delimits input and output with NULPatrick Steinhardt1-21/+36
In db9d67f2e9 (builtin/cat-file.c: support NUL-delimited input with `-z`, 2022-07-22), we have introduced a new mode to read the input via NUL-delimited records instead of newline-delimited records. This allows the user to query for revisions that have newlines in their path component. While unusual, such queries are perfectly valid and thus it is clear that we should be able to support them properly. Unfortunately, the commit only changed the input to be NUL-delimited, but didn't change the output at the same time. While this is fine for queries that are processed successfully, it is less so for queries that aren't. In the case of missing commits for example the result can become entirely unparsable: ``` $ printf "7ce4f05bae8120d9fa258e854a8669f6ea9cb7b1 blob 10\n1234567890\n\n\commit000" | git cat-file --batch -z 7ce4f05bae8120d9fa258e854a8669f6ea9cb7b1 blob 10 1234567890 commit missing ``` This is of course a crafted query that is intentionally gaming the deficiency, but more benign queries that contain newlines would have similar problems. Ideally, we should have also changed the output to be NUL-delimited when `-z` is specified to avoid this problem. As the input is NUL-delimited, it is clear that the output in this case cannot ever contain NUL characters by itself. Furthermore, Git does not allow NUL characters in revisions anyway, further stressing the point that using NUL-delimited output is safe. The only exception is of course the object data itself, but as git-cat-file(1) prints the size of the object data clients should read until that specified size has been consumed. But even though `-z` has only been introduced a few releases ago in Git v2.38.0, changing the output format retroactively to also NUL-delimit output would be a backwards incompatible change. And while one could make the argument that the output is inherently broken already, we need to assume that there are existing users out there that use it just fine given that revisions containing newlines are quite exotic. Instead, introduce a new option `-Z` that switches to NUL-delimited input and output. While this new option could arguably only switch the output format to be NUL-delimited, the consequence would be that users have to always specify both `-z` and `-Z` when the input may contain newlines. On the other hand, if the user knows that there never will be newlines in the input, they don't have to use either of those options. There is thus no usecase that would warrant treating input and output format separately, which is why we instead opt to "do the right thing" and have `-Z` mean to NUL-terminate both formats. The old `-z` option is marked as deprecated with a hint that its output may become unparsable. It is thus hidden both from the synopsis as well as the command's help output. Compute the size of the object after replacing the idents and report it instead. In order to make `--batch-check` option honour the mailmap mechanism we have to read the contents of the commit/tag object. There were two ways to do it: 1. Make two calls to `oid_object_info_extended()`. If `--use-mailmap` option is given, the first call will get us the type of the object and second call will only be made if the object type is either a commit or tag to get the contents of the object. 2. Make one call to `oid_object_info_extended()` to get the type of the object. Then, if the object type is either of commit or tag, make a call to `repo_read_object_file()` to read the contents of the object. I benchmarked the following command with both the above approaches and compared against the current implementation where `--use-mailmap` option is ignored: `git cat-file --use-mailmap --batch-all-objects --batch-check --buffer --unordered` The results can be summarized as follows: Time (mean ± σ) default 827.7 ms ± 104.8 ms first approach 6.197 s ± 0.093 s second approach 1.975 s ± 0.217 s Since, the second approach is faster than the first one, I implemented it in this patch. The command git cat-file can now use the mailmap mechanism to replace idents with canonical versions for commit and tag objects. There are several options like `--batch`, `--batch-check` and `--batch-command` that can be combined with `--use-mailmap`. But the documentation for `--batch`, `--batch-check` and `--batch-command` doesn't say so. This patch fixes that documentation. When callers are using `cat-file` via one of the stdin-driven `--batch` modes, all input is newline-delimited. This presents a problem when callers wish to ask about, e.g. tree-entries that have a newline character present in their filename. To support this niche scenario, introduce a new `-z` mode to the `--batch`, `--batch-check`, and `--batch-command` suite of options that instructs `cat-file` to treat its input as NUL-delimited, allowing the individual commands themselves to have newlines present. The refactoring here is slightly unfortunate, since we turn loops like: while (strbuf_getline(&buf, stdin) != EOF) into: while (1) { int ret; if (opt->nul_terminated) ret = strbuf_getline_nul(&input, stdin); else ret = strbuf_getline(&input, stdin); if (ret == EOF) break; } It's tempting to think that we could use `strbuf_getwholeline()` and specify either `\n` or `\0` as the terminating character. But for input on platforms that include a CR character preceeding the LF, this wouldn't quite be the same, since `strbuf_getline(...)` will trim any trailing CR, while `strbuf_getwholeline(&buf, stdin, '\n')` will not. In the future, we could clean this up further by introducing a variant of `strbuf_getwholeline()` that addresses the aforementioned gap, but that approach felt too heavy-handed for this pair of uses. Some tests are added in t1006 to ensure that `cat-file` produces the same output in `--batch`, `--batch-check`, and `--batch-command` modes with and without the new `-z` option. Fix a memory leak where "cat-file" will leak the "path" member. See e5fba602e59 (textconv: support for cat_file, 2010-06-15) for the code that introduced the offending get_oid_with_context() call (called get_sha1_with_context() at the time). As a result we can mark several tests as passing with SANITIZE=leak using "TEST_PASSES_SANITIZE_LEAK=true". As noted in dc944b65f1d (get_sha1_with_context: dynamically allocate oc->path, 2017-05-19) callers must free the "path" member. That same commit added the relevant free() to this function, but we weren't catching cases where we'd return early. Since "nr" follows the usual pattern of being set to 0 if we've free()'d the memory already it's OK to call it twice, even in cases where we are doing a "flush". When format is passed into --batch, --batch-check, --batch-command, the format gets expanded. When nothing is passed in, the default format is set and the expand_format() gets called. We can save on these cycles by hardcoding how to print the information when nothing is passed as the format, or when the default format is passed. There is no need for the fully expanded format with the default. Add a new flag --batch-command that accepts commands and arguments from stdin, similar to git-update-ref --stdin. At GitLab, we use a pair of long running cat-file processes when accessing object content. One for iterating over object metadata with --batch-check, and the other to grab object contents with --batch. However, if we had --batch-command, we wouldn't need to keep both processes around, and instead just have one --batch-command process where we can flip between getting object info, and getting object contents. Since we have a pair of cat-file processes per repository, this means we can get rid of roughly half of long lived git cat-file processes. Given there are many repositories being accessed at any given time, this can lead to huge savings. git cat-file --batch-command will enter an interactive command mode whereby the user can enter in commands and their arguments that get queued in memory: <command1> [arg1] [arg2] LF <command2> [arg1] [arg2] LF When --buffer mode is used, commands will be queued in memory until a flush command is issued that execute them: flush LF The reason for a flush command is that when a consumer process (A) talks to a git cat-file process (B) and interactively writes to and reads from it in --buffer mode, (A) needs to be able to control when the buffer is flushed to stdout. Currently, from (A)'s perspective, the only way is to either 1. kill (B)'s process 2. send an invalid object to stdin. 1. is not ideal from a performance perspective as it will require spawning a new cat-file process each time, and 2. is hacky and not a good long term solution. With this mechanism of queueing up commands and letting (A) issue a flush command, process (A) can control when the buffer is flushed and can guarantee it will receive all of the output when in --buffer mode. --batch-command also will not allow (B) to flush to stdout until a flush is received. This patch adds the basic structure for adding command which can be extended in the future to add more commands. It also adds the following two commands (on top of the flush command): contents <object> LF info <object> LF The contents command takes an <object> argument and prints out the object contents. The info command takes an <object> argument and prints out the object metadata. Change the cat_one_file() logic that calls get_oid_with_context() under --textconv and --filters to use the GET_OID_ONLY_TO_DIE flag, thus improving the error messaging emitted when e.g. <path> is missing but <rev> is not. To service the "cat-file" use-case we need to introduce a new "GET_OID_REQUIRE_PATH" flag, otherwise it would exit early as soon as a valid "HEAD" was resolved, but in the "cat-file" case being changed we always need a valid revision and path. This arguably makes the "<bad rev>:<bad path>" and "<bad rev>:<good (in HEAD) path>" use cases worse, as we won't quote the <path> component at the user anymore, but let's just use the existing logic "git log" et al use for now. With the migration of --batch-all-objects to OPT_CMDMODE() in the preceding commit one bug with combining it and other OPT_CMDMODE() options was solved, but we were still left with e.g. --buffer silently being discarded when not in batch mode. Fix all those bugs, and in addition emit errors telling the user specifically what options can't be combined with what other options, before this we'd usually just emit the cryptic usage text and leave the users to work it out by themselves. This change is rather large, because to do so we need to untangle the options processing so that we can not only error out, but emit sensible errors, and e.g. emit errors about options before errors about stray argc elements (as they might become valid if the option were removed). The usage of OPT_CMDMODE() in "cat-file"[1] was added in parallel with the development of[3] the --batch-all-objects option[4], so we've since grown[5] checks that it can't be combined with other command modes, when it should just be made a top-level command-mode instead. It doesn't combine with --filters, --textconv etc. By giving parse_options() information about what options are mutually exclusive with one another we can get the die() message being removed here for free, we didn't even use that removed message in some cases, e.g. for both of: --batch-all-objects --textconv --batch-all-objects --filters We'd take the "goto usage" in the "if (opt)" branch, and never reach the previous message. There were various inaccuracies in the previous SYNOPSIS output, e.g. "--path" is not something that can optionally go with any options except --textconv or --filters, as the output implied. That part of the documentation made sense in d83a42f34a6 (Documentation: minor grammatical fixes in git-cat-file.txt, 2009-03-22) when it was introduced, but since then various options that were added have made that intro make no sense in the context it was in. Now the two will match again. The usage output here is not properly aligned on "master" currently, but will be with my in-flight 4631cfc20bd (parse-options: properly align continued usage output, 2021-09-21), so let's indent things correctly in the C code in anticipation of that. When "cat-file --batch-all-objects" iterates over each object, it knows where to find each one. But when we look up details of the object, we don't use that information at all. This patch teaches it to use the pack/offset pair when we're iterating over objects in a pack. This yields a measurable speed improvement (timings on a fully packed clone of linux.git): Benchmark #1: ./git.old cat-file --batch-all-objects --unordered --batch-check="%(objecttype) %(objectname)" Time (mean ± σ): 8.128 s ± 0.118 s [User: 7.968 s, System: 0.156 s] Range (min … max): 8.007 s … 8.301 s 10 runs Benchmark #2: ./git.new cat-file --batch-all-objects --unordered --batch-check="%(objecttype) %(objectname)" Time (mean ± σ): 4.294 s ± 0.064 s [User: 4.167 s, System: 0.125 s] Range (min … max): 4.227 s … 4.457 s 10 runs Summary './git.new cat-file --batch-all-objects --unordered --batch-check="%(objecttype) %(objectname)"' ran 1.89 ± 0.04 times faster than './git.old cat-file --batch-all-objects --unordered --batch-check="%(objecttype) %(objectname)" The implementation is pretty simple: we just call packed_object_info() instead of oid_object_info_extended() when we can. Most of the changes are just plumbing the pack/offset pair through the callstack. There is one subtlety: replace lookups are not handled by packed_object_info(). But since those are disabled for --batch-all-objects, and since we'll only have pack info when that option is in effect, we don't have to worry about that. There are a few limitations to this optimization which we could address with further work: - I didn't bother recording when we found an object loose. Technically this could save us doing a fruitless lookup in the pack index. But opening and mmap-ing a loose object is so expensive in the first place that this doesn't matter much. And if your repository is large enough to care about per-object performance, most objects are going to be packed anyway. - This works only in --unordered mode. For the sorted mode, we'd have to record the pack/offset pair as part of our oid-collection. That's more code, plus at least 16 extra bytes of heap per object. It would probably still be a net win in runtime, but we'd need to measure. - For --batch, this still helps us with getting the object metadata, but we still do a from-scratch lookup for the object contents. This probably doesn't matter that much, because the lookup cost will be much smaller relative to the cost of actually unpacking and printing the objects. For small objects, we could probably swap out read_object_file() for using packed_object_info() with a "object_info.contentp" to get the contents. But we'd still need to deal with streaming for larger objects. A better path forward here is to teach the initial oid_object_info_extended() / packed_object_info() calls to retrieve the contents of smaller objects while they are already being accessed. That would save the extra lookup entirely. But it's a non-trivial feature to add to the object_info code, so I left it for now. When we later added --unordered, that code path writes immediately as we discover each object, but just calls the same batch_object_cb() as our entry point to the writing code. That callback has a narrow interface; it only receives the oid, but we know much more about each object in the unordered write (which we'll make use of in the next patch). 2021-10-08cat-file: disable refs/replace with --batch-all-objectsJeff King1-0/+2
When we're enumerating all objects in the object database, it doesn't make sense to respect refs/replace. The point of this option is to enumerate all of the objects in the database at a low level. By definition we'd already show the replacement object's contents (under its real oid), and showing those contents under another oid is almost certainly working against what the user is trying to do. Note that you could make the same argument for something like: git show-index <foo.idx | awk '{print $2}' | git cat-file --batch but there we can't know in cat-file exactly what the user intended, because we don't know the source of the input. They could be trying to do low-level debugging, or they could be doing something more high-level (e.g., imagine a porcelain built around cat-file for its object accesses). So in those cases, we'll have to rely on the user specifying "git --no-replace-objects" to tell us what to do. One _could_ make an argument that "cat-file --batch" is sufficiently low-level plumbing that it should not respect replace-objects at all (and the caller should do any replacement if they want it). But we have been doing so for some time. The history is a little tangled: - looking back as far as v1.6.6, we would not respect replace refs for --batch-check, but would for --batch (because the former used sha1_object_info(), and the replace mechanism only affected actual object reads) - this discrepancy was made even weirder by 98e2092b50 (cat-file: teach --batch to stream blob objects, 2013-07-10), where we always output the header using the --batch-check code, and then printed the object separately. This could lead to "cat-file --batch" dying (when it notices the size or type changed for a non-blob object) or even producing bogus output (in streaming mode, we didn't notice that we wrote the wrong number of bytes). - that persisted until 1f7117ef7a (sha1_file: perform object replacement in sha1_object_info_extended(), 2013-12-11), which then respected replace refs for both forms. So it has worked reliably this way for over 7 years, and we should make sure it continues to do so. That could also be an argument that --batch-all-objects should not change behavior (which this patch is doing), but I really consider the current behavior to be an unintended bug. It's a side effect of how the code is implemented (feeding the oids back into oid_object_info() rather than looking at what we found while reading the loose and packed object storage). The implementation is straight-forward: we just disable the global read_replace_refs flag when we're in --batch-all-objects mode. It would perhaps be a little cleaner to change the flag we pass to oid_object_info_extended(), but that's not enough. We also read objects via read_object_file() and stream_blob_to_fd(). The former could switch to its _extended() form, but the streaming code has no mechanism for disabling replace refs. Setting the global flag works, and as a bonus, it's impossible to have any "oops, we're sometimes replacing the object and sometimes not" bugs in the output (like the ones caused by 98e2092b50 above). The tests here cover the regular-input and --batch-all-objects cases, for both --batch-check and --batch. There is a test in t6050 that covers the regular-input case with --batch already, but this new one goes much further in actually verifying the output (plus covering --batch-check explicitly). This is perhaps a little overkill and the tests would be simpler just covering --batch-check, but I wanted to make sure we're checking that --batch output is consistent between the header and the content. The global-flag technique used here makes that easy to get right, but this is future-proofing us against regressions. The --batch code to print an object assumes we found out the type of the object from calling oid_object_info_extended(). This is true for the default format, but even in a custom format, we manually modify the object_info struct to ask for the type. This assumption was broken by 845de33a5b (cat-file: avoid noop calls to sha1_object_info_extended, 2016-05-18). That commit skips the call to oid_object_info_extended() entirely when --batch-all-objects is in use, and the custom format does not include any placeholders that require calling it. Or when the custom format only include placeholders like %(objectname) or %(rest), oid_object_info_extended() will not get the type of the object. This results in an error when we try to confirm that the type didn't change: $ git cat-file --batch=batman --batch-all-objects batman fatal: object 000023961a0c02d6e21dc51ea3484ff71abf1c74 changed type!? and also has other subtle effects (e.g., we'd fail to stream a blob, since we don't realize it's a blob in the first place). We can fix this by flipping the order of the setup. The check for "do we need to get the object info" must come _after_ we've decided whether we need to look up the type. However, we have the OPT_CALLBACK and OPT_CALLBACK_F macros which are meant to abstract these plain struct definitions away. These macros are useful as they semantically signal to developers that these are just normal callback option with nothing fancy happening. Replace plain struct definitions of OPTION_CALLBACK with OPT_CALLBACK or OPT_CALLBACK_F where applicable. Let's complete the transition by renaming the source and header files (and fixing up a few comment references). I kept the "-" in the name, as that seems to be our style; cf. fc1395f4a4 (sha1_file.c: rename to use dash in file name, 2018-04-10). We also have oidmap.h and oidset.h without any punctuation, but those are "struct oidmap" and "struct oidset" in the code. We _could_ make this "oidarray" to match, but somehow it looks uglier to me because of the length of "array" (plus it would be a very invasive patch for little gain). Now that we have the codebase wired up to pass any additional metadata to filters, let's collect the additional metadata that we'd like to pass. The two main places we pass this metadata are checkouts and archives. In these two situations, reading HEAD isn't a valid option, since HEAD isn't updated for checkouts until after the working tree is written and archives can accept an arbitrary tree. In other situations, HEAD will usually reflect the refname of the branch in current use. We pass a smaller amount of data in other cases, such as git cat-file, where we can really only logically know about the blob. This commit updates only the parts of the checkout code where we don't use unpack_trees. That function and callers of it will be handled in a future commit. In the archive code, we leak a small amount of memory, since nothing we pass in the archiver argument structure is freed. There are a variety of situations where a filter process can make use of some additional metadata. For example, some people find the ident filter too limiting and would like to include the commit or the branch in their smudged files. This information isn't available during checkout as HEAD hasn't been updated at that point, and it wouldn't be available in archives either. Let's add a way to pass this metadata down to the filter. We pass the blob we're operating on, the treeish (preferring the commit over the tree if one exists), and the ref we're operating on. Note that we won't pass this information in all cases, such as when renormalizing or when we're performing diffs, since it doesn't make sense in those cases. The data we currently get from the filter process looks like the following: command=smudge pathname=git.c 0000 With this change, we'll get data more like this: command=smudge pathname=git.c refname=refs/tags/v2.25.1 treeish=c522f061d551c9bb8684a7c3859b2ece4499b56b blob=7be7ad34bd053884ec48923706e70c81719a8660 0000 There are a couple things to note about this approach. For operations like checkout, treeish will always be a commit, since we cannot check out individual trees, but for other operations, like archive, we can end up operating on only a particular tree, so we'll provide only a tree as the treeish. Similar comments apply for refname, since there are a variety of cases in which we won't have a ref. This commit wires up the code to print this information, but doesn't pass any of it at this point. If a caller sets the object_info.delta_base_sha1 to a non-NULL pointer, we'll write the oid of the object's delta base to it. But we can increase our type safety by switching this to a real object_id struct. All of our callers are just pointing into the hash member of an object_id anyway, so there's no inconvenience. Note that we do still keep it as a pointer-to-struct, because the NULL sentinel value tells us whether the caller is even interested in the information. In order to be able to change the type from "unsigned long" into size_t some day in the future, we need to have a way to print 64 bit variables on a system that has "unsigned long" defined to be 32 bit, like Win64. Upcast all those variables into uintmax_t before they are printed. This is to prepare for a bigger change, when "unsigned long" will be converted into size_t for variables which may be > 4Gib. When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier patches in this series show). Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with -Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset" parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered with PARSE_OPT_NOARG). But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls in the future. We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern, we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that these should never be seen). Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers -Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable). There are three ways to convince cat-file to stream a blob: - cat-file -p $blob - cat-file blob $blob - echo $batch | cat-file --batch In the first two, we simply exit with the error code of streaw_blob_to_fd(). That means that an error will cause us to exit with "-1" (which we try to avoid) without printing any kind of error message (which is confusing to the user). Instead, let's match the third case, which calls die() on an error. Unfortunately we cannot be more specific, as stream_blob_to_fd() does not tell us whether the problem was on reading (e.g., a corrupt object) or on writing (e.g., ENOSPC). That might be an opportunity for future work, but for now we will at least exit with a sane message and exit code. When we're in batch mode, we end up in batch_object_write() for each object, which allocates its own strbuf for each call. Instead, we can provide a single "scratch" buffer that gets reused for each output. When running: git cat-file --batch-all-objects --batch-check='%(objectname)' on git.git, my best-of-five time drops from: real 0m0.171s user 0m0.159s sys 0m0.012s to: real 0m0.133s user 0m0.121s sys 0m0.012s Note that we could do this just by putting the "scratch" pointer into "struct expand_data", but I chose instead to add an extra parameter to the callstack. That's more verbose, but it makes it a bit more obvious what is going on, which in turn makes it easy to see where we need to be releasing the string in the caller (right after the loop which uses it in each case). If you're going to access the contents of every object in a packfile, it's generally much more efficient to do so in pack order, rather than in hash order. That increases the locality of access within the packfile, which in turn is friendlier to the delta base cache, since the packfile puts related deltas next to each other. By contrast, hash order is effectively random, since the sha1 has no discernible relationship to the content. This patch introduces an "--unordered" option to cat-file which iterates over packs in pack-order under the hood. You can see the results when dumping all of the file content: $ time ./git cat-file --batch-all-objects --buffer --batch | wc -c 6883195596 real 0m44.491s user 0m42.902s sys 0m5.230s $ time ./git cat-file --unordered \ --batch-all-objects --buffer --batch | wc -c 6883195596 real 0m6.075s user 0m4.774s sys 0m3.548s Same output, different order, way faster. The same speed-up applies even if you end up accessing the object content in a different process, like: git cat-file --batch-all-objects --buffer --batch-check | grep blob | git cat-file --batch='%(objectname) %(rest)' | wc -c Adding "--unordered" to the first command drops the runtime in git.git from 24s to 3.5s. Side note: there are actually further speedups available for doing it all in-process now. Since we are outputting the object content during the actual pack iteration, we know where to find the object and could skip the extra lookup done by oid_object_info(). This patch stops short of that optimization since the underlying API isn't ready for us to make those sorts of direct requests. So if --unordered is so much better, why not make it the default? Two reasons: 1. We've promised in the documentation that --batch-all-objects outputs in hash order. Since cat-file is plumbing, people may be relying on that default, and we can't change it. 2. It's actually _slower_ for some cases. We have to compute the pack revindex to walk in pack order. And our de-duplication step uses an oidset, rather than a sort-and-dedup, which can end up being more expensive. If we're just accessing the type and size of each object, for example, like: git cat-file --batch-all-objects --buffer --batch-check my best-of-five warm cache timings go from 900ms to 1100ms using --unordered. Though it's possible in a cold-cache or under memory pressure that we could do better, since we'd have better locality within the packfile. And one final question: why is it "--unordered" and not "--pack-order"? The answer is again two-fold: 1. "pack order" isn't a well-defined thing across the whole set of objects. We're hitting loose objects, as well as objects in multiple packs, and the only ordering we're promising is _within_ a single pack. The rest is apparently random. 2. The point here is optimization. So we don't want to promise any particular ordering, but only to say that we will choose an ordering which is likely to be efficient for accessing the object content. That leaves the door open for further changes in the future without having to add another compatibility option. 2017-12-08sha1_file: support lazily fetching missing objectsJonathan Tan1-0/+2
Teach sha1_file to fetch objects from the remote configured in extensions.partialclone whenever an object is requested but missing. The fetching of objects can be suppressed through a global variable. This is used by fsck and index-pack. However, by default, such fetching is not suppressed. This is meant as a temporary measure to ensure that all Git commands work in such a situation. Future patches will update some commands to either tolerate missing objects (without fetching them) or be more efficient in fetching them. In order to determine the code changes in sha1_file.c necessary, I investigated the following: (1) functions in sha1_file.c that take in a hash, without the user regarding how the object is stored (loose or packed) (2) functions in packfile.c (because I need to check callers that know about the loose/packed distinction and operate on both differently, and ensure that they can handle the concept of objects that are neither loose nor packed) (1) is handled by the modification to sha1_object_info_extended(). For (2), I looked at for_each_packed_object and others. Gcc 7 adds -Wimplicit-fallthrough, which can warn when a switch case falls through to the next case. The general idea is that the compiler can't tell if this was intentional or not, so you should annotate any intentional fall-throughs as such, leaving it to complain about any unannotated ones. There's a GNU __attribute__ which can be used for annotation, but of course we'd have to #ifdef it away on non-gcc compilers. Gcc will also recognize specially-formatted comments, which matches our current practice. Let's extend that practice to all of the unannotated sites (which I did look over and verify that they were behaving as intended). Ideally in each case we'd actually give some reasons in the comment about why we're falling through, or what we're falling through to. And gcc does support that with -Wimplicit-fallthrough=2, which relaxes the comment pattern matching to anything that contains "fallthrough" (or a variety of spelling variants). However, this isn't the default for -Wimplicit-fallthrough, nor for -Wextra. In the name of simplicity, it's probably better for us to support the default level, which requires "fallthrough" to be the only thing in the comment (modulo some window dressing like "else" and some punctuation; see the gcc manual for the complete set of patterns). This patch suppresses all warnings due to -Wimplicit-fallthrough. We might eventually want to add that to the DEVELOPER Makefile knob, but we should probably wait until gcc 7 is more widely adopted (since earlier versions will complain about the unknown warning type). Commit dc944b65f1 (get_sha1_with_context: dynamically allocate oc->path, 2017-05-19) changed the rules that callers must follow for seeing if we parsed a path in the object name. The rules switched from "check if the oc.path buffer is empty" to "check if the oc.path pointer is NULL". But that commit forgot to update some sites in cat_one_file(), meaning we might dereference a NULL pointer. You can see this by making a path-aware request like --textconv without specifying --path, and giving an object name that doesn't have a path in it. Despite its name and location in cache.h, this flag is used neither in read_sha1_file_extended() nor in any of the lookup functions, but used only in sha1_object_info_extended(). Therefore rename this flag to OBJECT_INFO_ALLOW_UNKNOWN_TYPE, taking the name of the cat-file flag that invokes this feature, and move it closer to the declaration of sha1_object_info_extended(). Also add documentation for this flag. OBJECT_INFO_ALLOW_UNKNOWN_TYPE is defined to 2, not 1, to avoid conflicting with LOOKUP_REPLACE_OBJECT. Avoidance of this conflict is necessary because sha1_object_info_extended() supports both flags. When a sha1 lookup returns the tree path via "struct object_context", it just copies it into a fixed-size buffer. This means the result can be truncated, and it means our "struct object_context" consumes a lot of stack space. Instead, let's allocate a string on the heap. Because most callers don't care about this information, we'll avoid doing it by default (so they don't all have to start calling free() on the result). There are basically two options for the caller to signal to us that it's interested: 1. By setting a pointer to storage in the object_context. 2. By passing a flag in another parameter. Doing (1) would match the way that sha1_object_info_extended() works. But it would mean that every caller would have to initialize the object_context, which they don't currently have to do. This patch does (2), and adds a new bit to the function's flags field. All of the callers that look at the "path" field are updated to pass the new flag. There are circumstances when it is relatively easy to figure out the object name for a given path, but not the name of the containing tree. For example, when looking at a diff generated by Git, the object names are recorded, but not the revision. As a matter of fact, the revisions from which the diff was generated may not even exist locally. In such a case, the user would have to generate a fake revision just to be able to use --textconv or --filters. Let's simplify this dramatically, because we do not really need that revision at all: all we care about is that we know the path. In the scenario described above, we do know the path, and we just want to specify it separately from the object name. 2016-08-11provide an initializer for "struct object_info"Jeff King1-3/+2
An all-zero initializer is fine for this struct, but because the first element is a pointer, call sites need to know to use "NULL" instead of "0". Otherwise some static checkers like "sparse" will complain; see d099b71 (Fix some sparse warnings, 2013-07-18) for example. So let's provide an initializer to make this easier to get right. But let's also comment that memset() to zero is explicitly OK[1]. One of the callers embeds object_info in another struct which is initialized via memset (expand_data in builtin/cat-file.c). Since our subset of C doesn't allow assignment from a compound literal, handling this in any other way is awkward, so we'd like to keep the ability to initialize by memset(). By documenting this property, it should make anybody who wants to change the initializer think twice before doing so. There's one other caller of interest. In parse_sha1_header(), we did not initialize the struct fully in the first place. This turned out not to be a bug because the sub-function it calls does not look at any other fields except the ones we did initialize. But that assumption might not hold in the future, so it's a dangerous construct. This patch switches it to initializing the whole struct, which protects us against unexpected reads of the other fields. [1] Obviously using memset() to initialize a pointer violates the C standard, but we long ago decided that it was an acceptable tradeoff in the real world. Traditionally cat-file's batch-mode does not do any output buffering. The reason is that a caller may have pipes connected to its input and output, and would want to use cat-file interactively, getting output immediately for each input it sends. This may involve a lot of small write() calls, which can be slow. So we introduced --buffer to improve this, but we can't turn it on by default, as it would break the interactive case above. However, when --batch-all-objects is used, we do not read stdin at all. We generate the output ourselves as quickly as possible, and then exit. In this case buffering is a strict win, and it is simply a hassle for the user to have to remember to specify --buffer. This patch makes --buffer the default when --batch-all-objects is used. Specifying "--buffer" manually is still OK, and you can even override it with "--no-buffer" if you're a masochist (or debugging). For some real numbers, running: git cat-file --batch-all-objects --batch-check='%(objectname)' on torvalds/linux goes from: real 0m1.464s user 0m1.208s sys 0m0.252s to: real 0m1.230s user 0m1.172s sys 0m0.056s for a 16% speedup. It is not unreasonable to ask cat-file for a batch-check format of simply "%(objectname)". At first glance this seems like a noop (you are generally already feeding the object names on stdin!), but it has a few uses: 1. With --batch-all-objects, you can generate a listing of the sha1s present in the repository, without any input. 2. You do not have to feed sha1s; you can feed arbitrary sha1 expressions and have git resolve them en masse. 3. You can even feed a raw sha1, with the result that git will tell you whether we actually have the object or not. In case 3, the call to sha1_object_info is useful; it tells us whether the object exists or not (technically we could swap this out for has_sha1_file, but the cost is roughly the same). In case 2, the existence check is of debatable value. A mass-resolution might prefer performance to safety (against outputting a value for a corrupted ref, for example). However, the object lookup cost is likely not as noticeable compared to the resolution cost. And since we have provided that safety in the past, the conservative choice is to keep it. In case 1, though, the object lookup is a definite noop; we know about the object because we found it in the object database. There is no new information gained by making the call. This patch detects that case and optimizes out the call. One is that we detect the noop case by seeing that "struct object_info" does not request any information. But besides object existence, there is one other piece of information which sha1_object_info may fill in: whether the object is cached, loose, or packed. We don't currently provide that information in the output, but if we were to do so later, we'd need to take note and disable the optimization in that case. And that leads to the second note. If we were to output that information, a better implementation would be to remember where we saw the object in --batch-all-objects in the first place, and avoid looking it up again by sha1. In fact, we could probably squeeze out some extra performance for less-trivial cases, too, by remembering the pack location where we saw the object, and going directly there to find its information (like type, size, etc). That would in theory make this optimization unnecessary. I didn't pursue that path here for two reasons: 1. It's non-trivial to implement, and has memory implications. Because we sort and de-dup the list of output sha1s, we'd have to record the pack information for each object, too. 2. It doesn't save as much as you might hope. It saves the find_pack_entry() call, but getting the size and type for deltified objects requires walking down the delta chain (for the real type) or reading the delta data header (for the size). These costs tend to dominate the non-trivial cases. By contrast, this optimization is easy and self-contained, and speeds up a real-world case I've used. No useful caller that uses other value has emerged. By now, it is clear that the interface is overly broad without a good reason. Many codepaths have hardcoded preference to read either LF terminated or NUL terminated records from their input, and then call strbuf_getline() with LF or NUL as the third parameter. This step introduces two thin wrappers around strbuf_getline(), namely, strbuf_getline_lf() and strbuf_getline_nul(), and mechanically rewrites these call sites to call either one of them. The changes contained in this patch are: * introduction of these two functions in strbuf.[ch] * mechanical conversion of all callers to strbuf_getline() with either '\n' or '\0' as the third parameter to instead call the respective thin wrapper. After this step, output from "git grep 'strbuf_getline('" would become a lot smaller. The synopsys text and the usage string of subcommands that read list of things from the standard input are often shown like this: git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes> This is problematic in a number of ways: * The way to use these commands is more often to feed them the output from another command, not feed them from a file. * Manual pages outside Git, commands that operate on the data read from the standard input, e.g "sort", "grep", "sed", etc., are not described with such a "< redirection-from-file" in their synopsys text. Our doing so introduces inconsistency. * We do not insist on where the output should go, by saying git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes> > <output> * As it is our convention to enclose placeholders inside <braket>, the redirection operator followed by a placeholder filename becomes very hard to read, both in the documentation and in the help text. Let's clean them all up, after making sure that the documentation clearly describes the modes that take information from the standard input and what kind of things are expected on the input. 2015-06-22cat-file: add --batch-all-objects optionJeff King1-2/+42
It can sometimes be useful to examine all objects in the repository. Normally this is done with "git rev-list --all --objects", but: 1. That shows only reachable objects. You may want to look at all available objects. 2. It's slow. We actually open each object to walk the graph. If your operation is OK with seeing unreachable objects, it's an order of magnitude faster to just enumerate the loose directories and pack indices. You can do this yourself using "ls" and "git show-index", but it's non-obvious. This patch adds an option to "cat-file --batch-check" to operate on all available objects (rather than reading names from stdin). This is based on a proposal by Charles Bailey to provide a separate "git list-all-objects" command. That is more orthogonal, as it splits enumerating the objects from getting information about them. However, in practice you will either: a. Feed the list of objects directly into cat-file anyway, so you can find out information about them. Keeping it in a single process is more efficient. b. Ask the listing process to start telling you more information about the objects, in which case you will reinvent cat-file's batch-check formatter. Adding a cat-file option is simple and efficient.
