2017-02-27Merge branch 'rl/remote-allow-missing-branch-name-merge'Junio C Hamano1-1/+3
"git remote rm X", when a branch has remote X configured as the value of its branch.*.remote, tried to remove branch.*.remote and branch.*.merge and failed if either is unset. * rl/remote-allow-missing-branch-name-merge: remote: ignore failure to remove missing branch.<name>.merge
2017-02-21remote: ignore failure to remove missing branch.<name>.mergeRoss Lagerwall1-1/+3
It is not all too unusual for a branch to use "branch.<name>.remote" without "branch.<name>.merge". You may be using the 'push.default' configuration set to 'current', for example, and do $ git checkout -b side colleague/side $ git config branch.side.remote colleague However, "git remote rm" to remove the remote used in such a manner fails with "fatal: could not unset 'branch.<name>.merge'" because it assumes that a branch that has .remote defined must also have .merge defined. Detect the "cannot unset because it is not set to begin with" case and ignore it. Signed-off-by: Ross Lagerwall <rosslagerwall@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-02-20delete_ref: accept a reflog message argumentKyle Meyer1-2/+2
When the current branch is renamed with 'git branch -m/-M' or deleted with 'git update-ref -m<msg> -d', the event is recorded in HEAD's log with an empty message. In preparation for adding a more meaningful message to HEAD's log in these cases, update delete_ref() to take a message argument and pass it along to ref_transaction_delete(). Modify all callers to pass NULL for the new message argument; no change in behavior is intended. Note that this is relevant for HEAD's log but not for the deleted ref's log, which is currently deleted along with the ref. Even if it were not, an entry for the deletion wouldn't be present in the deleted ref's log. files_transaction_commit() writes to the log if REF_NEEDS_COMMIT or REF_LOG_ONLY are set, but lock_ref_for_update() doesn't set REF_NEEDS_COMMIT for the deleted ref because REF_DELETING is set. In contrast, the update for HEAD has REF_LOG_ONLY set by split_head_update(), resulting in the deletion being logged. 2017-01-31Merge branch 'js/remote-rename-with-half-configured-remote'Junio C Hamano1-7/+7
With anticipatory tweaking for remotes defined in ~/.gitconfig (e.g. "remote.origin.prune" set to true, even though there may or may not actually be "origin" remote defined in a particular Git repository), "git remote rename" and other commands misinterpreted and behaved as if such a non-existing remote actually existed. * js/remote-rename-with-half-configured-remote: remote rename: more carefully determine whether a remote is configured remote rename: demonstrate a bogus "remote exists" bug
2017-01-19remote rename: more carefully determine whether a remote is configuredJohannes Schindelin1-7/+7
One of the really nice features of the ~/.gitconfig file is that users can override defaults by their own preferred settings for all of their repositories. One such default that some users like to override is whether the "origin" remote gets auto-pruned or not. The user would simply call git config --global remote.origin.prune true and from now on all "origin" remotes would be pruned automatically when fetching into the local repository. There is just one catch: now Git thinks that the "origin" remote is configured, even if the repository config has no [remote "origin"] section at all, as it does not realize that the "prune" setting was configured globally and that there really is no "origin" remote configured in this repository. That is a problem e.g. when renaming a remote to a new name, when Git may be fooled into thinking that there is already a remote of that new name. Let's fix this by paying more attention to *where* the remote settings came from: if they are configured in the local repository config, we must not overwrite them. If they were configured elsewhere, we cannot overwrite them to begin with, as we only write the repository config. There is only one caller of remote_is_configured() (in `git fetch`) that may want to take remotes into account even if they were configured outside the repository config; all other callers essentially try to prevent the Git command from overwriting settings in the repository config. To accommodate that fact, the remote_is_configured() function now requires a parameter that states whether the caller is interested in all remotes, or only in those that were configured in the repository config. Many thanks to Jeff King whose tireless review helped with settling for nothing less than the current strategy. 2016-06-13use string_list initializer consistentlyJeff King1-1/+1
There are two types of string_lists: those that own the string memory, and those that don't. You can tell the difference by the strdup_strings flag, and one should use either STRING_LIST_INIT_DUP, or STRING_LIST_INIT_NODUP as an initializer. Historically, the normal all-zeros initialization has corresponded to the NODUP case. Many sites use no initializer at all, and that works as a shorthand for that case. But for a reader of the code, it can be hard to remember which is which. Let's be more explicit and actually have each site declare which type it means to use. This is a fairly mechanical conversion; I assumed each site was correct as-is, and just switched them all to NODUP. Rename git_config_set_or_die functions to git_config_set, leading to the new default behavior of dying whenever a configuration error occurs. 2016-02-22config: rename git_config_set to git_config_set_gentlyPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
The desired default behavior for `git_config_set` is to die whenever an error occurs. Dying is the default for a lot of internal functions when failures occur and is in this case the right thing to do for most callers as otherwise we might run into inconsistent repositories without noticing. As some code may rely on the actual return values for `git_config_set` we still require the ability to invoke these functions without aborting. Rename the existing `git_config_set` functions to `git_config_set_gently` to keep them available for those callers. 2016-02-22remote: die on config error when setting/adding branchesPatrick Steinhardt1-17/+9

2016-02-16remote: use remote_is_configured() for add and renameThomas Gummerer1-5/+2
Both remote add and remote rename use a slightly different hand-rolled check if the remote exits. The hand-rolled check may have some subtle cases in which it might fail to detect when a remote already exists. One such case was fixed in fb86e32 ("git remote: allow adding remotes agreeing with url.<...>.insteadOf"). Another case is when a remote is configured as follows: [remote "foo"] vcs = bar If we try to run `git remote add foo bar` with the above remote configuration, git segfaults. This change fixes it. In addition, git remote rename $existing foo with the configuration for foo as above silently succeeds, even though foo already exists, modifying its configuration. With this patch it fails with "remote foo already exists". 2016-02-16remote: actually check if remote exitsThomas Gummerer1-2/+2
When converting the git remote command to a builtin in 211c89 ("Make git-remote a builtin"), a few calls to check if a remote exists were converted from: if (!exists $remote->{$name}) { [...] to: remote = remote_get(argv[1]); if (!remote) [...] The new check is not quite correct, because remote_get() never returns NULL if a name is given. This leaves us with the somewhat cryptic error message "error: Could not remove config section 'remote.test'", if we are trying to remove a remote that does not exist, or a similar error if we try to rename a remote. Use the remote_is_configured() function to check whether the remote actually exists, and die with a more sensible error message ("No such remote: $remotename") instead if it doesn't. In addition, it only checks the configuration for remotes, but not remotes or branches files. Make use of the origin member of struct remote instead, which indicates where the remote comes from. It will be set to some value if the remote is configured in any file in the repository, but is initialized to 0 if the remote is only created in make_remote(). 2015-08-10remote.c: drop extraneous local variable from migrate_fileJeff King1-5/+2
It's an anti-pattern to assign the result of git_path to a variable, since other calls may reuse our buffer. In this case, we feed the result to unlink_or_warn immediately afterwards, so it's OK. However, it's nice to avoid assignment entirely, which makes it more obvious that there's no bug. We can just pass the result directly to unlink_or_warn, which is a known-simple function. As a bonus, the code flow is a little more obvious, as we eliminate an extra conditional (a reader does not have to wonder any more "under which circumstances is 'path' set?"). 2015-06-22prune_remote(): use delete_refs()Michael Haggerty1-9/+2
This slightly changes how errors are reported. The old and new code both report errors that come from repack_without_refs() the same way. But if an error occurs within delete_ref(), the old version only emitted an error within delete_ref() without further comment. The new version (in delete_refs()) still emits that error, but then follows it up with error(_("could not remove reference %s"), refname) The "could not remove reference" error originally came from a similar message in remove_branches() (from builtin/remote.c). This is an improvement, because the error from delete_ref() (which usually comes from ref_transaction_commit()) can be pretty low-level, like Cannot lock ref '%s': unable to resolve reference %s: %s where the last "%s" is the original strerror. In any case, I don't think we need to sweat the details too much, because these errors should only ever be seen in the case of a broken repository or a race between two processes; i.e., only in pretty rare and anomalous situations. Change typedef each_ref_fn to take a "const struct object_id *oid" parameter instead of "const unsigned char *sha1". To aid this transition, implement an adapter that can be used to wrap old-style functions matching the old typedef, which is now called "each_ref_sha1_fn"), and make such functions callable via the new interface. This requires the old function and its cb_data to be wrapped in a "struct each_ref_fn_sha1_adapter", and that object to be used as the cb_data for an adapter function, each_ref_fn_adapter(). This is an enormous diff, but most of it consists of simple, mechanical changes to the sites that call any of the "for_each_ref" family of functions. When adding a remote, we make sure that the remote does not exist already. However, this test was not quite correct: when the url.<...>.insteadOf config variable was set to the remote name to be added, the code would assume that the remote exists already. Let's allow adding remotes when there is a url.<...>.insteadOf setting when both the name and the URL agree with the remote to be added. Make git_path(), mkpath() and git_path_submodule() return a const buffer to make sure callers do not write in it at all. 2014-10-15remote rm/prune: print a message when writing packed-refs failsRonnie Sahlberg1-4/+11
Until v2.1.0-rc0~22^2~11 (refs.c: add an err argument to repack_without_refs, 2014-06-20), repack_without_refs forgot to provide an error message when commit_packed_refs fails. Even today, it only provides a message for callers that pass a non-NULL err parameter. Internal callers in refs.c pass non-NULL err but "git remote" does not. That means that "git remote rm" and "git remote prune" can fail without printing a message about why. Fix them by passing in a non-NULL err parameter and printing the returned message. This is the last caller to a ref handling function passing err == NULL. A later patch can drop support for err == NULL, avoiding such problems in the future. 2014-10-15refs.c: change resolve_ref_unsafe reading argument to be a flags fieldRonnie Sahlberg1-2/+3
resolve_ref_unsafe takes a boolean argument for reading (a nonexistent ref resolves successfully for writing but not for reading). Change this to be a flags field instead, and pass the new constant RESOLVE_REF_READING when we want this behaviour. While at it, swap two of the arguments in the function to put output arguments at the end. As a nice side effect, this ensures that we can catch callers that were unaware of the new API so they can be audited. 2014-06-30use strip_suffix instead of ends_with in simple casesJeff King1-6/+7
When stripping a suffix like: if (ends_with(str, "foo")) buf = xmemdupz(str, strlen(str) - 3); we can instead use strip_suffix to avoid the constant 3, which must match the literal "foo" (we sometimes use strlen("foo") instead, but that means we are repeating ourselves). The example above becomes: if (strip_suffix(str, "foo", &len)) buf = xmemdupz(str, len); This also saves a strlen(), since we calculate the string length when detecting the suffix. Note that in some cases we also switch from xstrndup to xmemdupz, which saves a further strlen call. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2014-06-20refactor skip_prefix to return a booleanJeff King1-3/+1
The skip_prefix() function returns a pointer to the content past the prefix, or NULL if the prefix was not found. While this is nice and simple, in practice it makes it hard to use for two reasons: 1. When you want to conditionally skip or keep the string as-is, you have to introduce a temporary variable. For example: tmp = skip_prefix(buf, "foo"); if (tmp) buf = tmp; 2. It is verbose to check the outcome in a conditional, as you need extra parentheses to silence compiler warnings. For example: if ((cp = skip_prefix(buf, "foo")) /* do something with cp */ Both of these make it harder to use for long if-chains, and we tend to use starts_with() instead. However, the first line of "do something" is often to then skip forward in buf past the prefix, either using a magic constant or with an extra strlen(3) (which is generally computed at compile time, but means we are repeating ourselves). This patch refactors skip_prefix() to return a simple boolean, and to provide the pointer value as an out-parameter. If the prefix is not found, the out-parameter is untouched. This lets you write: if (skip_prefix(arg, "foo ", &arg)) do_foo(arg); else if (skip_prefix(arg, "bar ", &arg)) do_bar(arg); Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

When 'git remote prune' was used to delete many refs in a repository with many refs, a lot of time was spent checking for (now) dangling symbolic refs pointing to the deleted ref, since warn_dangling_symref() was once per deleted ref to check all other refs in the repository. When 'git remote rm' or 'git remote prune' were used in a repository with many refs, and needed to delete many remote-tracking refs, a lot of time was spent deleting those refs since for each deleted ref, repack_without_refs() was called to rewrite packed-refs without just that deleted ref. To avoid this, call repack_without_refs() first to repack without all the refs that will be deleted, before calling delete_ref() to delete each one completely. The call to repack_without_ref() in delete_ref() then becomes a no-op, since packed-refs already won't contain any of the deleted refs. 2013-12-05builtin/remote: remove postfixcmp() and use suffixcmp() insteadChristian Couder1-11/+3
Commit 8cc5b290 (git merge -X<option>, 25 Nov 2009) introduced suffixcmp() with nearly the same implementation as postfixcmp() that already existed since commit 211c8968 (Make git-remote a builtin, 29 Feb 2008). The only difference between the two implementations is that, when the string is smaller than the suffix, one implementation returns 1 while the other one returns -1. But, as postfixcmp() is only used to compare for equality, the distinction does not matter and does not affect the correctness of this patch. As postfixcmp() has always been static in builtin/remote.c and is used nowhere else, it makes more sense to remove it and use suffixcmp() instead in builtin/remote.c, rather than to remove suffixcmp(). If the user gave us refspecs on the command line, we should use those when deciding whether to prune a ref instead of relying on the refspecs in the config. Previously, running git fetch --prune origin refs/heads/master:refs/remotes/origin/master would delete every other ref under the origin namespace because we were using the refspec to filter the available refs but using the configured refspec to figure out if a ref had been deleted on the remote. This is clearly the wrong thing to do. Change prune_refs and get_stale_heads to simply accept a list of references and a list of refspecs. 2011-05-26remote: allow "-t" with fetch mirrorsJeff King1-2/+2
Commit 13fc2c1 (remote: disallow some nonsensical option combinations, 2011-03-30) made it impossible to use "remote add -t foo --mirror". The argument was that specifying specific branches is useless because: 1. Push mirrors do not want a refspec at all. 2. The point of fetch mirroring is to use a broad refspec like "refs/*", but using "-t" overrides that. Point (1) is valid; "-t" with push mirrors is useless. But point (2) ignored another side effect of using --mirror: it fetches the refs directly into the refs/ namespace as they are found upstream, instead of placing them in a separate-remote layout. So 13fc2c1 was overly constrictive, and disallowed reasonable specific-branch mirroring, like: git remote add -t heads/foo -t heads/bar --mirror=fetch which makes the local "foo" and "bar" branches direct mirrors of the remote, but does not fetch anything else. This patch restores the original behavior, but only for fetch mirrors. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2011-03-30remote: deprecate --mirrorJeff King1-1/+7
The configuration created by plain --mirror is dangerous and useless, and we now have --mirror=fetch and --mirror=push to replace it. Let's warn the user. One alternative to this is to try to guess which type the user wants. In a non-bare repository, a fetch mirror doesn't make much sense, since it would overwrite local commits. But in a bare repository, you might use either type, or even both (e.g., if you are acting as an intermediate drop-point across two disconnected networks). So rather than try for complex heuristics, let's keep it simple. The user knows what they're trying to do, so let them tell us. 2011-03-30remote: separate the concept of push and fetch mirrorsJeff King1-13/+38
git-remote currently has one option, "--mirror", which sets up mirror configuration which can be used for either fetching or pushing. It looks like this: [remote "mirror"] url = wherever fetch = +refs/*:refs/* mirror = true However, a remote like this can be dangerous and confusing. Specifically: 1. If you issue the wrong command, it can be devastating. You are not likely to "push" when you meant to "fetch", but "git remote update" will try to fetch it, even if you intended the remote only for pushing. In either case, the results can be quite destructive. An unintended push will overwrite or delete remote refs, and an unintended fetch can overwrite local branches. 2. The tracking setup code can produce confusing results. The fetch refspec above means that "git checkout -b new master" will consider refs/heads/master to come from the remote "mirror", even if you only ever intend to push to the mirror. It will set up the "new" branch to track mirror's refs/heads/master. 3. The push code tries to opportunistically update tracking branches. If you "git push mirror foo:bar", it will see that we are updating mirror's refs/heads/bar, which corresponds to our local refs/heads/bar, and will update our local branch. To solve this, we split the concept into "push mirrors" and "fetch mirrors". Push mirrors set only remote.*.mirror, solving (2) and (3), and making an accidental fetch write only into FETCH_HEAD. Fetch mirrors set only the fetch refspec, meaning an accidental push will not force-overwrite or delete refs on the remote end. The new syntax is "--mirror=<fetch|push>". For compatibility, we keep "--mirror" as-is, setting up both types simultaneously. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2011-03-30remote: disallow some nonsensical option combinationsJeff King1-0/+5
It doesn't make sense to use "-m" on a mirror, since "-m" sets up the HEAD symref in the remotes namespace, but with mirror, we are by definition not using a remotes namespace. Similarly, it does not make much sense to specify refspecs with --mirror. For a mirror you plan to push to, those refspecs will be ignored. For a mirror you are fetching from, there is no point in mirroring, since the refspec specifies everything you want to grab. There is one case where "--mirror -t <X>" would be useful. Because <X> is used as-is in the refspec, and because we append it to to refs/, you could mirror a subset of the hierarchy by doing: git remote add --mirror -t 'tags/*' But using anything besides a single branch as an argument to "-t" is not documented and only happens to work, so closing it off is not a serious regression. 2010-05-31enums: omit trailing comma for portabilityGary V. Vaughan1-1/+1
Without this patch at least IBM VisualAge C 5.0 (I have 5.0.2) on AIX 5.1 fails to compile git. enum style is inconsistent already, with some enums declared on one line, some over 3 lines with the enum values all on the middle line, sometimes with 1 enum value per line... and independently of that the trailing comma is sometimes present and other times absent, often mixing with/without trailing comma styles in a single file, and sometimes in consecutive enum declarations. Clearly, omitting the comma is the more portable style, and this patch changes all enum declarations to use the portable omitted dangling comma style consistently. Signed-off-by: Gary V. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of production systems with vendor compilers that choke unless all compound declarations can be determined statically at compile time, for example hpux10.20 (I can provide a comprehensive list of our supported platforms that exhibit this problem if necessary). This patch simply breaks apart any compound declarations with dynamic initialisation expressions, and moves the initialisation until after the last declaration in the same block, in all the places necessary to have the offending compilers accept the code. This shrinks the top-level directory a bit, and makes it much more pleasant to use auto-completion on the thing. Instead of [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em buil<tab> Display all 180 possibilities? NOTE! If you do this in a clean tree (no object files etc), or using an editor that has auto-completion rules that ignores '*.o' files, you won't see that annoying 'Display all 180 possibilities?' message - it will just show the choices instead. I think bash has some cut-off around 100 choices or something. So the reason I see this is that I'm using an odd editory, and thus don't have the rules to cut down on auto-completion. But you can simulate that by using 'ls' instead, or something similar. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
