The output of "git worktree list" displays a table containing the worktree path, HEAD OID and branch name for each worktree. The code aligns the columns by measuring the visual width of the worktree path when it is printed. Unfortunately it fails to use the visual width when calculating the width of the column so, if any of the paths contain a multibyte character, we can end up with excess padding between columns. The simplest fix would be to replace strlen() with utf8_strwidth() in measure_widths(). However that leaves us measuring the visual width twice and the byte length once. By caching the visual width and printing the padding separately to the worktree path, we only need to calculate the visual width once and do not need the byte length at all. The visual widths are stored in an arrays of structs rather than an array of ints as the next commit will add more struct members. Even if there are no multibyte characters in any of the paths we still print an extra space between the path and the object id as the field width is calculated as one plus the length of the path and we print an explicit space as well. This is fixed by not printing the extra space. The tests are updated to include multibyte characters in one of the worktree paths and to check the spacing of the columns. 2025-11-04refs: introduce wrapper struct for `each_ref_fn`Patrick Steinhardt1-5/+1
The `each_ref_fn` callback function type is used across our code base for several different functions that iterate through reference. There's a bunch of callbacks implementing this type, which makes any changes to the callback signature extremely noisy. An example of the required churn is e8207717f1 (refs: add referent to each_ref_fn, 2024-08-09): adding a single argument required us to change 48 files. It was already proposed back then [1] that we might want to introduce a wrapper structure to alleviate the pain going forward. While this of course requires the same kind of global refactoring as just introducing a new parameter, it at least allows us to more change the callback type afterwards by just extending the wrapper structure. One counterargument to this refactoring is that it makes the structure more opaque. While it is obvious which callsites need to be fixed up when we change the function type, it's not obvious anymore once we use a structure. That being said, we only have a handful of sites that actually need to populate this wrapper structure: our ref backends, "refs/iterator.c" as well as very few sites that invoke the iterator callback functions directly. Introduce this wrapper structure so that we can adapt the iterator interfaces more readily. Those function have been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global repository variable explicit at the callsite. Follow through with that intent and remove `git_config_set_multivar_in_file_gently()`. All callsites are adjusted so that they use `repo_config_set_multivar_in_file_gently(the_repository, ...)` instead. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. The `safe_create_leading_directories()` function and its relatives are located in "object-file.c", which is not a good fit as they provide generic functionality not related to objects at all. Move them into "path.c", which already hosts `safe_create_dir()` and its relative `safe_create_dir_in_gitdir()`. "path.c" is free of `the_repository`, but the moved functions depend on `the_repository` to read the "core.sharedRepository" config. Adapt the function signature to accept a repository as argument to fix the issue and adjust callers accordingly. 2025-03-10hash: stop depending on `the_repository` in `null_oid()`Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
The `null_oid()` function returns the object ID that only consists of zeroes. Naturally, this ID also depends on the hash algorithm used, as the number of zeroes is different between SHA1 and SHA256. Consequently, the function returns the hash-algorithm-specific null object ID. This is currently done by depending on `the_hash_algo`, which implicitly makes us depend on `the_repository`. Refactor the function to instead pass in the hash algorithm for which we want to retrieve the null object ID. Adapt callsites accordingly by passing in `the_repository`, thus bubbling up the dependency on that global variable by one layer. There are a couple of trivial exceptions for subsystems that already got rid of `the_repository`. These subsystems instead use the repository that is available via the calling context: - "builtin/grep.c" - "grep.c" - "refs/debug.c" There are also two non-trivial exceptions: - "diff-no-index.c": Here we know that we may not have a repository initialized at all, so we cannot rely on `the_repository`. Instead, we adapt `diff_no_index()` to get a `struct git_hash_algo` as parameter. The only caller is located in "builtin/diff.c", where we know to call `repo_set_hash_algo()` in case we're running outside of a Git repository. Consequently, it is fine to continue passing `the_repository->hash_algo` even in this case. - "builtin/ls-files.c": There is an in-flight patch series that drops `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` in this file, which causes a semantic conflict because we use `null_oid()` in `show_submodule()`. The value is passed to `repo_submodule_init()`, which may use the object ID to resolve a tree-ish in the superproject from which we want to read the submodule config. As such, the object ID should refer to an object in the superproject, and consequently we need to use its hash algorithm. This means that we could in theory just not bother about this edge case at all and just use `the_repository` in "diff-no-index.c". But doing so would feel misdesigned. 2025-02-07worktree: return allocated string from `get_worktree_git_dir()`Patrick Steinhardt1-2/+8
The `get_worktree_git_dir()` function returns a string constant that does not need to be free'd by the caller. This string is computed for three different cases: - If we don't have a worktree we return a path into the Git directory. The returned string is owned by `the_repository`, so there is no need for the caller to free it. - If we have a worktree, but no worktree ID then the caller requests the main worktree. In this case we return a path into the common directory, which again is owned by `the_repository` and thus does not need to be free'd. - In the third case, where we have an actual worktree, we compute the path relative to "$GIT_COMMON_DIR/worktrees/". This string does not need to be released either, even though `git_common_path()` ends up allocating memory. But this doesn't result in a memory leak either because we write into a buffer returned by `get_pathname()`, which returns one out of four static buffers. We're about to drop `git_common_path()` in favor of `repo_common_path()`, which doesn't use the same mechanism but instead returns an allocated string owned by the caller. While we could adapt `get_worktree_git_dir()` to also use `get_pathname()` and print the derived common path into that buffer, the whole schema feels a lot like premature optimization in this context. There are some callsites where we call `get_worktree_git_dir()` in a loop that iterates through all worktrees. But none of these loops seem to be even remotely in the hot path, so saving a single allocation there does not feel worth it. Refactor the function to instead consistently return an allocated path so that we can start using `repo_common_path()` in a subsequent commit. This teaches the `worktree repair` command to respect the `--[no-]relative-paths` CLI option and `worktree.useRelativePaths` config setting. If an existing worktree with an absolute path is repaired with `--relative-paths`, the links will be replaced with relative paths, even if the original path was correct. This allows a user to covert existing worktrees between absolute/relative as desired. To simplify things, both linking files are written when one of the files needs to be repaired. In some cases, this fixes the other file before it is checked, in other cases this results in a correct file being written with the same contents. This allowed the repository to be passed down to lower layers without depending on the global `the_repository` variable. This will help pass down the repository to other subsystems and cleanup usage of global variables like 'the_repository' and 'the_hash_algo'. 2024-10-08worktree: link worktrees with relative pathsCaleb White1-7/+9
Git currently stores absolute paths to both the main repository and linked worktrees. However, this causes problems when moving repositories or working in containerized environments where absolute paths differ between systems. The worktree links break, and users are required to manually execute `worktree repair` to repair them, leading to workflow disruptions. Additionally, mapping repositories inside of containerized environments renders the repository unusable inside the containers, and this is not repairable as repairing the worktrees inside the containers will result in them being broken outside the containers. To address this, this patch makes Git always write relative paths when linking worktrees. Relative paths increase the resilience of the worktree links across various systems and environments, particularly when the worktrees are self-contained inside the main repository (such as when using a bare repository with worktrees). This improves portability, workflow efficiency, and reduces overall breakages. Although Git now writes relative paths, existing repositories with absolute paths are still supported. There are no breaking changes to workflows based on absolute paths, ensuring backward compatibility. At a low level, the changes involve modifying functions in `worktree.c` and `builtin/worktree.c` to use `relative_path()` when writing the worktree’s `.git` file and the main repository’s `gitdir` reference. Instead of hardcoding absolute paths, Git now computes the relative path between the worktree and the repository, ensuring that these links are portable. Locations where these respective file are read have also been updated to properly handle both absolute and relative paths. Generally, relative paths are always resolved into absolute paths before any operations or comparisons are performed. Additionally, `repair_worktrees_after_gitdir_move()` has been introduced to address the case where both the `<worktree>/.git` and `<repo>/worktrees/<id>/gitdir` links are broken after the gitdir is moved (such as during a re-initialization). This function repairs both sides of the worktree link using the old gitdir path to reestablish the correct paths after a move. The `worktree.path` struct member has also been updated to always store the absolute path of a worktree. This ensures that worktree consumers never have to worry about trying to resolve the absolute path themselves. These heuristics all allocate a new string, but we only end up freeing that string in a subset of cases. Fix the remaining cases where we didn't yet free the derived branch names. Introduce the ability to append comments to modifications made using git-config. Example usage: git config --comment "changed via script" \ --add safe.directory /home/alice/repo.git based on the proposed patch, the output produced is: [safe] directory = /home/alice/repo.git #changed via script Users need to be able to distinguish between config entries made using automation and entries made by a human. Automation can add comments containing a URL pointing to explanations for the change made, avoiding questions from users as to why their config file was changed by a third party. The implementation ensures that a # character is unconditionally prepended to the provided comment string, and that the comment text is appended as a suffix to the changed key-value-pair in the same line of text. Multi-line comments (i.e. comments containing linefeed) are rejected as errors, causing Git to exit without making changes. Comments are aimed at humans who inspect or change their Git config using a pager or editor. Comments are not meant to be read or displayed by git-config at a later time. As part of our transition to multi-byte comment characters, let's take a NUL-terminated string pointer for strbuf_stripspace(), rather than a single character. We can continue to support its feature of ignoring comments by accepting a NULL pointer (as opposed to the current behavior of a NUL byte). All of the callers have to be adjusted, but they can all just pass comment_line_str (or NULL). Inside the function we detect comments by comparing the first byte of a line to the comment character. We'll adjust that to use starts_with(), which will match multiple bytes (though for now, of course, we still only allow a single byte, so it's academic). When creating a worktree we create the worktree's ref database manually by first writing a "HEAD" file so that the directory is recognized as a Git repository by other commands, and then running git-update-ref(1) or git-symbolic-ref(1) to write the actual value. But while this is fine for the files backend, this logic simply assumes too much about how the ref backend works and will leave behind an invalid ref database once any other ref backend lands. Refactor the code to instead use `refs_init_db()` to initialize the ref database so that git-worktree(1) itself does not need to know about how to initialize it. This will allow future ref backends to customize how the per-worktree ref database is set up. Furthermore, as we now already have a worktree ref store around, we can also avoid spawning external commands to write the HEAD reference and instead use the refs API to do so. Note that we do not have an equivalent to passing the `--quiet` flag to git-symbolic-ref(1) as we did before. This flag does not have an effect anyway though, as git-symbolic-ref(1) only honors it when reading a symref, but never when writing one. 2023-06-28config: add ctx arg to config_fn_tGlen Choo1-2/+3
Add a new "const struct config_context *ctx" arg to config_fn_t to hold additional information about the config iteration operation. config_context has a "struct key_value_info kvi" member that holds metadata about the config source being read (e.g. what kind of config source it is, the filename, etc). In this series, we're only interested in .kvi, so we could have just used "struct key_value_info" as an arg, but config_context makes it possible to add/adjust members in the future without changing the config_fn_t signature. We could also consider other ways of organizing the args (e.g. moving the config name and value into config_context or key_value_info), but in my experiments, the incremental benefit doesn't justify the added complexity (e.g. a config_fn_t will sometimes invoke another config_fn_t but with a different config value). In subsequent commits, the .kvi member will replace the global "struct config_reader" in config.c, making config iteration a global-free operation. It requires much more work for the machinery to provide meaningful values of .kvi, so for now, merely change the signature and call sites, pass NULL as a placeholder value, and don't rely on the arg in any meaningful way. Most of the changes are performed by contrib/coccinelle/config_fn_ctx.pending.cocci, which, for every config_fn_t: - Modifies the signature to accept "const struct config_context *ctx" - Passes "ctx" to any inner config_fn_t, if needed - Adds UNUSED attributes to "ctx", if needed Most config_fn_t instances are easily identified by seeing if they are called by the various config functions. Most of the remaining ones are manually named in the .cocci patch. Manual cleanups are still needed, but the majority of it is trivial; it's either adjusting config_fn_t that the .cocci patch didn't catch, or adding forward declarations of "struct config_context ctx" to make the signatures make sense. The non-trivial changes are in cases where we are invoking a config_fn_t outside of config machinery, and we now need to decide what value of "ctx" to pass. These cases are: - trace2/tr2_cfg.c:tr2_cfg_set_fl() This is indirectly called by git_config_set() so that the trace2 machinery can notice the new config values and update its settings using the tr2 config parsing function, i.e. tr2_cfg_cb(). - builtin/checkout.c:checkout_main() This calls git_xmerge_config() as a shorthand for parsing a CLI arg. This might be worth refactoring away in the future, since git_xmerge_config() can call git_default_config(), which can do much more than just parsing. Handle them by creating a KVI_INIT macro that initializes "struct key_value_info" to a reasonable default, and use that to construct the "ctx" arg. The index is read in 'worktree.c' at two points: 1.The 'validate_no_submodules' function, which checks if there are any submodules present in the worktree. 2.The 'check_clean_worktree' function, which verifies if a worktree is 'clean', i.e., there are no untracked or modified but uncommitted files. This is done by running the 'git status' command, and an error message is thrown if the worktree is not clean. Given that 'git status' is already sparse-aware, the function is also sparse-aware. Hence we can just set the requires-full-index to false for "git worktree". Add tests that verify that 'git worktree' behaves correctly when the sparse index is enabled and test to ensure the index is not expanded. The `p2000` tests demonstrate a ~20% execution time reduction for 'git worktree' using a sparse index: (Note:the p2000 test results didn't reflect the huge speedup because of the index reading time is minuscule comparing to the filesystem operations.) 2023-04-24hash-ll.h: split out of hash.h to remove dependency on repository.hElijah Newren1-0/+1
hash.h depends upon and includes repository.h, due to the definition and use of the_hash_algo (defined as the_repository->hash_algo). However, most headers trying to include hash.h are only interested in the layout of the structs like object_id. Move the parts of hash.h that do not depend upon repository.h into a new file hash-ll.h (the "low level" parts of hash.h), and adjust other files to use this new header where the convenience inline functions aren't needed. This allows hash.h and object.h to be fairly small, minimal headers. It also exposes a lot of hidden dependencies on both path.h (which was brought in by repository.h) and repository.h (which was previously implicitly brought in by object.h), so also adjust other files to be more explicit about what they depend upon. 2023-03-28config API: add and use a "git_config_get()" family of functionsÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-2/+1
We already have the basic "git_config_get_value()" function and its "repo_*" and "configset" siblings to get a given "key" and assign the last key found to a provided "value". But some callers don't care about that value, but just want to use the return value of the "get_value()" function to check whether the key exist (or another non-zero return value). The immediate motivation for this is that a subsequent commit will need to change all callers of the "*_get_value_multi()" family of functions. In two cases here we (ab)used it to check whether we had any values for the given key, but didn't care about the return value. The rest of the callers here used various other config API functions to do the same, all of which resolved to the same underlying functions to provide the answer. Some of these were using either git_config_get_string() or git_config_get_string_tmp(), see fe4c750fb13 (submodule--helper: fix a configure_added_submodule() leak, 2022-09-01) for a recent example. We can now use a helper function that doesn't require a throwaway variable. We could have changed git_configset_get_value_multi() (and then git_config_get_value() etc.) to accept a "NULL" as a "dest" for all callers, but let's avoid changing the behavior of existing API users. Having an "unused" value that we throw away internal to config.c is cheap. A "NULL as optional dest" pattern is also more fragile, as the intent of the caller might be misinterpreted if he were to accidentally pass "NULL", e.g. when "dest" is passed in from another function. Another name for this function could have been "*_config_key_exists()", as suggested in [1]. That would work for all of these callers, and would currently be equivalent to this function, as the git_configset_get_value() API normalizes all non-zero return values to a "1". But adding that API would set us up to lose information, as e.g. if git_config_parse_key() in the underlying configset_find_element() fails we'd like to return -1, not 1. Let's change the underlying configset_find_element() function to support this use-case, we'll make further use of it in a subsequent commit where the git_configset_get_value_multi() function itself will expose this new return value. This still leaves various inconsistencies and clobbering or ignoring of the return value in place. E.g here we're modifying configset_add_value(), but ever since it was added in [2] we've been ignoring its "int" return value, but as we're changing the configset_find_element() it uses, let's have it faithfully ferry that "ret" along. Let's also use the "RESULT_MUST_BE_USED" macro introduced in [3] to assert that we're checking the return value of configset_find_element(). We're leaving the same change to configset_add_value() for some future series. Once we start paying attention to its return value we'd need to ferry it up as deep as do_config_from(), and would need to make least read_{,very_}early_config() and git_protected_config() return an "int" instead of "void". But doing it this way avoids an allocation, as we already have the "struct strbuf" prepared for appending to "kept". When the "repo" member was added to "the_index" in [1] the repo_read_index() was made to populate it, but the unpopulated "the_index" variable didn't get the same treatment. Let's do that in initialize_the_repository() when we set it up, and likewise for all of the current callers initialized an empty "struct index_state". This simplifies code that needs to deal with "the_index" or a custom "struct index_state", we no longer need to second-guess this part of the "index_state" deep in the stack. A recent example of such second-guessing is the "istate->repo ? istate->repo : the_repository" code in [2]. We can now simply use "istate->repo". We're doing this by making use of the INDEX_STATE_INIT() macro (and corresponding function) added in [3], which now have mandatory "repo" arguments. Because we now call index_state_init() in repository.c's initialize_the_repository() we don't need to handle the case where we have a "repo->index" whose "repo" member doesn't match the "repo" we're setting up, i.e. the "Complete the double-reference" code in repo_read_index() being altered here. That logic was originally added in [1], and was working around the lack of what we now have in initialize_the_repository(). For "fsmonitor-settings.c" we can remove the initialization of a NULL "r" argument to "the_repository". This was added back in [4], and was needed at the time for callers that would pass us the "r" from an "istate->repo". Before this change such a change to "fsmonitor-settings.c" would segfault all over the test suite (e.g. in t0002-gitfile.sh). This change has wider eventual implications for "fsmonitor-settings.c". The reason the other lazy loading behavior in it is required (starting with "if (!r->settings.fsmonitor) ..." is because of the previously passed "r" being "NULL". I have other local changes on top of this which move its configuration reading to "prepare_repo_settings()" in "repo-settings.c", as we could now start to rely on it being called for our "r". The various ad-hoc initialization of the structure can then be changed over to it, and we can remove the various "0" assignments in discard_index() in favor of calling index_state_init() at the end. While not strictly necessary, let's also change the CALLOC_ARRAY() of various "struct index_state *" to use an ALLOC_ARRAY() followed by index_state_init() instead. We're then adding the release_index() function and converting some callers (including some of these allocations) over to it if they either won't need to use their "struct index_state" again, or are just about to call index_state_init(). For a lot of uses of UNLEAK() it would be quite tricky to release the memory involved, or we're missing the relevant *_(release|clear)() functions. But in these cases we have them already, and can just invoke them on the variable(s) involved, instead of UNLEAK(). For "builtin/worktree.c" the UNLEAK() was also added in [1], but the struct member it's unleaking was removed in [2]. The only non-"int" member of that structure is "const char *keep_locked", which comes to us via "argv" or a string literal[3]. We have good visibility via the compiler and tooling (e.g. SANITIZE=address) on bad free()-ing, but none on UNLEAK() we don't need anymore. So let's prefer releasing the memory when it's easy. For "bugreport", "worktree" and "config" we need to start using a "ret = ..." return pattern. For "builtin/bugreport.c" these UNLEAK() were added in [4], and for "builtin/config.c" in [1]. For "config" the code seen here was the only user of the "value" variable. For "ACTION_{RENAME,REMOVE}_SECTION" we need to be sure to return the right exit code in the cases where we were relying on falling through to the top-level. I think there's still a use-case for UNLEAK(), but hat it's changed since then. Using it so that "we can see the real leaks" is counter-productive in these cases. It's more useful to have UNLEAK() be a marker of the remaining odd cases where it's hard to free() the memory for whatever reason. Start following-up on the rename mentioned in c7c4bdeccf3 (run-command API: remove "env" member, always use "env_array", 2021-11-25) of "env_array" to "env". The "env_array" name was picked in 19a583dc39e (run-command: add env_array, an optional argv_array for env, 2014-10-19) because "env" was taken. Let's not forever keep the oddity of "*_array" for this "struct strvec", but not for its "args" sibling. This commit is almost entirely made with a coccinelle rule[1]. The only manual change here is in run-command.h to rename the struct member itself and to change "env_array" to "env" in the CHILD_PROCESS_INIT initializer. 2022-02-08worktree: copy sparse-checkout patterns and config on addDerrick Stolee1-0/+63
When adding a new worktree, it is reasonable to expect that we want to use the current set of sparse-checkout settings for that new worktree. This is particularly important for repositories where the worktree would become too large to be useful. This is even more important when using partial clone as well, since we want to avoid downloading the missing blobs for files that should not be written to the new worktree. The only way to create such a worktree without this intermediate step of expanding the full worktree is to copy the sparse-checkout patterns and config settings during 'git worktree add'. Each worktree has its own sparse-checkout patterns, and the default behavior when the sparse-checkout file is missing is to include all paths at HEAD. Thus, we need to have patterns from somewhere, they might as well be the current worktree's patterns. These are then modified independently in the future. In addition to the sparse-checkout file, copy the worktree config file if worktree config is enabled and the file exists. This will copy over any important settings to ensure the new worktree behaves the same as the current one. The only exception we must continue to make is that core.bare and core.worktree should become unset in the worktree's config file. Move the running of the 'post-checkout' hook away from run-command.h to the new hook.h library in builtin/worktree.c. For this special case we need a change to the hook API to teach it to run the hook from a given directory. We cannot skip the "absolute_path" flag and just check if "dir" is specified as we'd then fail to find our hook in the new dir we'd chdir() to. We currently don't have a use-case for running a hook not in our "base" repository at a given absolute path, so let's have "dir" imply absolute_path(find_hook(hook_name)). The order in which the stdout and stderr streams are flushed is not guaranteed to be the same across platforms or `libc` implementations. This lack of determinism can lead to anomalous and potentially confusing output if normal (stdout) output is flushed after error (stderr) output. For instance, the following output which clearly indicates a failure due to a fatal error: % git worktree add ../foo bar Preparing worktree (checking out 'bar') fatal: 'bar' is already checked out at '.../wherever' has been reported[1] on Microsoft Windows to appear as: % git worktree add ../foo bar fatal: 'bar' is already checked out at '.../wherever' Preparing worktree (checking out 'bar') which may confuse the reader into thinking that the command somehow recovered and ran to completion despite the error. This problem crops up because the "chatty" status message "Preparing worktree" is sent to stdout, whereas the "fatal" error message is sent to stderr. One way to fix this would be to flush stdout manually before git-worktree reports any errors to stderr. However, common practice in Git is for "chatty" messages to be sent to stderr. Therefore, a more appropriate fix is to adjust git-worktree to conform to that practice by sending its "chatty" messages to stderr rather than stdout as is currently the case. There may be concern that relocating messages from stdout to stderr could break existing tooling, however, these messages are already internationalized, thus are unstable. And, indeed, the "Preparing worktree" message has already been the subject of somewhat significant changes in 2c27002a0a (worktree: improve message when creating a new worktree, 2018-04-24). Moreover, there is existing precedent, such as 68b939b2f0 (clone: send diagnostic messages to stderr, 2013-09-18) which likewise relocated "chatty" messages from stdout to stderr for git-clone. Remove the "env" member from "struct child_process" in favor of always using the "env_array". As with the preceding removal of "argv" in favor of "args" this gets rid of current and future oddities around memory management at the API boundary (see the amended API docs). For some of the conversions we can replace patterns like: child.env = env->v; With: strvec_pushv(&child.env_array, env->v); But for others we need to guard the strvec_pushv() with a NULL check, since we're not passing in the "v" member of a "struct strvec", e.g. in the case of tmp_objdir_env()'s return value. Ideally we'd rename the "env_array" member to simply "env" as a follow-up, since it and "args" are now inconsistent in not having an "_array" suffix, and seemingly without any good reason, unless we look at the history of how they came to be. But as we've currently got 122 in-tree hits for a "git grep env_array" let's leave that for now (and possibly forever). Doing that rename would be too disruptive. add_worktree() reuses a `child_process` for three run_command() invocations, but to do so, it has overly-intimate knowledge of run-command.c internals. In particular, it knows that it must reset child_process::argv to NULL for each subsequent invocation[*] in order for start_command() to latch the newly-populated child_process::args for each invocation, even though this behavior is not a part of the documented API. Beyond having overly-intimate knowledge of run-command.c internals, the reuse of one `child_process` for three run_command() invocations smells like an unnecessary micro-optimization. Therefore, stop sharing one `child_process` and instead use a new one for each run_command() call. [*] If child_process::argv is not reset to NULL, then subsequent run_command() invocations will instead incorrectly access a dangling pointer to freed memory which had been allocated by child_process::args on the previous run. Up until recently, object IDs did not have an algorithm member, only a hash. Consequently, it was possible to share one null (all-zeros) object ID among all hash algorithms. Now that we're going to be handling objects from multiple hash algorithms, it's important to make sure that all object IDs have a correct algorithm field. Introduce a per-algorithm null OID, and add it to struct hash_algo. Introduce a wrapper function as well, and use it everywhere we used to use the null_oid constant. Make sure that we release the temporary strbuf during dwim_branch() for all codepaths (and not just for the early return). "git worktree list" annotates each worktree according to its state such as "prunable" or "locked", however it is not immediately obvious why these worktrees are being annotated. For prunable worktrees a reason is available that is returned by should_prune_worktree() and for locked worktrees a reason might be available provided by the user via `lock` command. Let's teach "git worktree list" a --verbose mode that outputs the reason why the worktrees are being annotated. The reason is a text that can take virtually any size and appending the text on the default columned format will make it difficult to extend the command with other annotations and not fit nicely on the screen. In order to address this shortcoming the annotation is then moved to the next line indented followed by the reason If the reason is not available the annotation stays on the same line as the worktree itself. The "git worktree list" command shows the absolute path to the worktree, the commit that is checked out, the name of the branch, and a "locked" annotation if the worktree is locked, however, it does not indicate whether the worktree is prunable. The "prune" command will remove a worktree if it is prunable unless `--dry-run` option is specified. This could lead to a worktree being removed without the user realizing before it is too late, in case the user forgets to pass --dry-run for instance. If the "list" command shows which worktree is prunable, the user could verify before running "git worktree prune" and hopefully prevents the working tree to be removed "accidentally" on the worse case scenario. Let's teach "git worktree list" to show when a worktree is a prunable candidate for both default and porcelain format. Commit c57b3367be (worktree: teach `list` to annotate locked worktree, 2020-10-11) taught "git worktree list" to annotate locked worktrees by appending "locked" text to its output, however, this is not listed in the --porcelain format. Teach "list --porcelain" to do the same and add a "locked" attribute followed by its reason, thus making both default and porcelain format consistent. If the locked reason is not available then only "locked" is shown. `git worktree repair` knows how to repair the two-way links between the repository and a worktree as long as a link in one or the other direction is sound. For instance, if a linked worktree is moved (without using `git worktree move`), repair is possible because the worktree still knows the location of the repository even though the repository no longer knows where the worktree is. Similarly, if the repository is moved, repair is possible since the repository still knows the locations of the worktrees even though the worktrees no longer know where the repository is. However, if both the repository and the worktrees are moved, then links are severed in both directions, and no repair is possible. This is the case even when the new worktree locations are specified as arguments to `git worktree repair`. The reason for this limitation is twofold. First, when `repair` consults the worktree's gitfile (/path/to/worktree/.git) to determine the corresponding <repo>/worktrees/<id>/gitdir file to fix, <repo> is the old path to the repository, thus it is unable to fix the `gitdir` file at its new location since it doesn't know where it is. Second, when `repair` consults <repo>/worktrees/<id>/gitdir to find the location of the worktree's gitfile (/path/to/worktree/.git), the path recorded in `gitdir` is the old location of the worktree's gitfile, thus it is unable to repair the gitfile since it doesn't know where it is. Fix these shortcomings by teaching `repair` to attempt to infer the new location of the <repo>/worktrees/<id>/gitdir file when the location recorded in the worktree's gitfile has become stale but the file is otherwise well-formed. The inference is intentionally simple-minded. For each worktree path specified as an argument, `git worktree repair` manually reads the ".git" gitfile at that location and, if it is well-formed, extracts the <id>. It then searches for a corresponding <id> in <repo>/worktrees/ and, if found, concludes that there is a reasonable match and updates <repo>/worktrees/<id>/gitdir to point at the specified worktree path. In order for <repo> to be known, `git worktree repair` must be run in the main worktree or bare repository. `git worktree repair` first attempts to repair each incoming /path/to/worktree/.git gitfile to point at the repository, and then attempts to repair outgoing <repo>/worktrees/<id>/gitdir files to point at the worktrees. This sequence was chosen arbitrarily when originally implemented since the order of fixes is immaterial as long as one side of the two-way link between the repository and a worktree is sound. However, for this new repair technique to work, the order must be reversed. This is because the new inference mechanism, when it is successful, allows the outgoing <repo>/worktrees/<id>/gitdir file to be repaired, thus fixing one side of the two-way link. Once that side is fixed, the other side can be fixed by the existing repair mechanism, hence the order of repairs is now significant. Two safeguards are employed to avoid hijacking a worktree from a different repository if the user accidentally specifies a foreign worktree as an argument. The first, as described above, is that it requires an <id> match between the repository and the worktree. That itself is not foolproof for preventing hijack, so the second safeguard is that the inference will only kick in if the worktree's /path/to/worktree/.git gitfile does not point at a repository. Code which split an argv_array call across multiple lines, like: argv_array_pushl(&args, "one argument", "another argument", "and more", NULL); was recently mechanically renamed to use strvec, which results in mis-matched indentation like: strvec_pushl(&args, "one argument", "another argument", "and more", NULL); Let's fix these up to align the arguments with the opening paren. I did this manually by sifting through the results of: git jump grep 'strvec_.*,$' and liberally applying my editor's auto-format. Most of the changes are of the form shown above, though I also normalized a few that had originally used a single-tab indentation (rather than our usual style of aligning with the open paren). I also rewrapped a couple of obvious cases (e.g., where previously too-long lines became short enough to fit on one), but I wasn't aggressive about it. In cases broken to three or more lines, the grouping of arguments is sometimes meaningful, and it wasn't worth my time or reviewer time to ponder each case individually. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once, or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits. Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different names is OK). This patch converts all of the files in builtin/ to keep the diff to a manageable size. The conversion was done purely mechanically with: git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' | xargs perl -i -pe ' s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g; s/argv_array/strvec/g; ' and then selectively staging files with "git add builtin/". "git worktree add <path>" performs various checks before approving <path> as a valid location for the new worktree. Aside from ensuring that <path> does not already exist, one of the questions it asks is whether <path> is already a registered worktree. To perform this check, it queries find_worktree() and disallows the "add" operation if find_worktree() finds a match for <path>. As a convenience, however, find_worktree() casts an overly wide net to allow users to identify worktrees by shorthand in order to keep typing to a minimum. For instance, it performs suffix matching which, given subtrees "foo/bar" and "foo/baz", can correctly select the latter when asked only for "baz". "add" validation knows the exact path it is interrogating, so this sort of heuristic-based matching is, at best, questionable for this use-case and, at worst, may may accidentally interpret <path> as matching an existing worktree and incorrectly report it as already registered even when it isn't. (In fact, validate_worktree_add() already contains a special case to avoid accidentally matching against the main worktree, precisely due to this problem.) Avoid the problem of potential accidental matching against an existing worktree by instead taking advantage of find_worktree_by_path() which matches paths deterministically, without applying any sort of magic shorthand matching performed by find_worktree(). Uninitialized submodules have nothing valueable for us to be worried about. They are just SHA-1. Let "worktree remove" and "worktree move" continue in this case so that people can still use multiple worktrees on repos with optional submodules that are never populated, like sha1collisiondetection in git.git when checked out by doc-diff script. Note that for "worktree remove", it is possible that a user initializes a submodule (*), makes some commits (but not push), then deinitializes it. At that point, the submodule is unpopulated, but the precious new commits are still in $GIT_COMMON_DIR/worktrees/<worktree>/modules/<submodule> directory and we should not allow removing the worktree or we lose those commits forever. The new directory check is added to prevent this. (*) yes they are screwed anyway by doing this since "git submodule" would add submodule.* in $GIT_COMMON_DIR/config, which is shared across multiple worktrees. For safety, "git worktree add <path>" will refuse to add a new worktree at <path> if <path> is already associated with a worktree entry, even if <path> is missing (for instance, has been deleted or resides on non-mounted removable media or network share). The typical way to re-create a worktree at <path> in such a situation is either to prune all "broken" entries ("git worktree prune") or to selectively remove the worktree entry manually ("git worktree remove <path>"). However, neither of these approaches ("prune" nor "remove") is especially convenient, and they may be unsuitable for scripting when a tool merely wants to re-use a worktree if it exists or create it from scratch if it doesn't (much as a tool might use "mkdir -p" to re-use or create a directory). Therefore, teach 'add' to respect --force as a convenient way to re-use a path already associated with a worktree entry if the path is non-existent. A given path should only ever be associated with a single registered worktree. This invariant is enforced by refusing to create a new worktree at a given path if that path already exists. For example: $ git worktree add -q --detach foo $ git worktree add -q --detach foo fatal: 'foo' already exists However, the check can be fooled, and the invariant broken, if the path is missing. Continuing the example: $ rm -fr foo $ git worktree add -q --detach foo $ git worktree list ... eadebfe [master] .../foo eadebfe (detached HEAD) .../foo eadebfe (detached HEAD) This "corruption" leads to the unfortunate situation in which the worktree can not be removed: $ git worktree remove foo fatal: validation failed, cannot remove working tree: '.../foo' does not point back to '.git/worktrees/foo' Nor can the bogus entry be pruned: $ git worktree prune -v $ git worktree list ... eadebfe [master] .../foo eadebfe (detached HEAD) .../foo eadebfe (detached HEAD) without first deleting the worktree directory manually: $ rm -fr foo $ git worktree prune -v Removing .../foo: gitdir file points to non-existent location Removing .../foo1: gitdir file points to non-existent location $ git worktree list ... eadebfe [master] or by manually deleting the worktree entry in .git/worktrees. To address this problem, upgrade "git worktree add" validation to allow worktree creation only if the given path is not already associated with an existing worktree (even if the path itself is non-existent), thus preventing such bogus worktree entries from being created in the first place. Currently 'git worktree add <path>' creates a new branch named after the basename of the path by default. If a branch with that name already exists, the command refuses to do anything, unless the '--force' option is given. However we can do a little better than that, and check the branch out if it is not checked out anywhere else. This will help users who just want to check an existing branch out into a new worktree, and save a few keystrokes. As the current behaviour is to simply 'die()' when a branch with the name of the basename of the path already exists, there are no backwards compatibility worries here. We will still 'die()' if the branch is checked out in another worktree, unless the --force flag is passed. Currently 'git worktree add' produces output like the following: Preparing ../foo (identifier foo) HEAD is now at 26da330922 <title> The '../foo' is the path where the worktree is created, which the user has just given on the command line. The identifier is an internal implementation detail, which is not particularly relevant for the user and indeed isn't mentioned explicitly anywhere in the man page. Instead of this message, print a message that gives the user a bit more detail of what exactly 'git worktree' is doing. There are various dwim modes which perform some magic under the hood, which should be helpful to users. Just from the output of the command it is not always visible to users what exactly has happened. Help the users a bit more by modifying the "Preparing ..." message and adding some additional information of what 'git worktree add' did under the hood, while not displaying the identifier anymore. Currently there are several different cases: - 'git worktree add -b ...' or 'git worktree add <path>', both of which create a new branch, either through the user explicitly requesting it, or through 'git worktree add' implicitly creating it. This will end up with the following output: Preparing worktree (new branch '<branch>') HEAD is now at 26da330922 <title> - 'git worktree add -B ...', which may either create a new branch if the branch with the given name does not exist yet, or resets an existing branch to the current HEAD, or the commit-ish given. Automatic detection of worktree relocation by a user (via 'mv', for instance) was removed by 618244e160 (worktree: stop supporting moving worktrees manually - 2016-01-22). Prior to that, .git/worktrees/<tag>/gitdir was updated whenever the worktree was accessed in order to let the pruning logic know that the worktree was "active" even if it disappeared for a while (due to being located on removable media, for instance). "git worktree move" has come so we don't really need this, but since it's easy to do, perhaps we could keep supporting manual worktree move a bit longer. Notice that when a worktree is active, the "index" file should be updated pretty often in common case. The logic is updated to check for index mtime to see if the worktree is alive. The old logic of checking gitdir's mtime is dropped because nobody updates it anyway. The new corner case is, if the index file does not exist, we immediately remove the stale worktree. This "link" was a feature in early iterations of multiple worktree functionality for some reason it was dropped [1]. Since nobody creates this "link", there's no need to check it. This is mostly used to let the user moves a worktree manually [2]. If you move a worktree within the same file system, this hard link count lets us know the worktree is still there even if we don't know where it is. We support 'worktree move' now and don't need this anymore.
