2024-02-23cache-tree: avoid an unnecessary checkJohannes Schindelin1-1/+1
The first thing the `parse_tree()` function does is to return early if the tree has already been parsed. Therefore we do not need to guard the `parse_tree()` call behind a check of that flag. As of time of writing, there are no other instances of this in Git's code bases: whenever the `parsed` flag guards a `parse_tree()` call, it guards more than just that call. Otherwise we may easily run into serious crashes: For example, if we run `init_tree_desc()` directly after a failed `parse_tree()`, we are accessing uninitialized data or trying to dereference `NULL`. Note that the `parse_tree()` function already takes care of showing an error message. The `parse_tree_indirectly()` and `repo_get_commit_tree()` functions do not, therefore those latter call sites need to show a useful error message while the former do not. Each of these were checked with gcc -E -I. ${SOURCE_FILE} | grep ${HEADER_FILE} to ensure that removing the direct inclusion of the header actually resulted in that header no longer being included at all (i.e. that no other header pulled it in transitively). ...except for a few cases where we verified that although the header was brought in transitively, nothing from it was directly used in that source file. 2023-10-02tree-walk: init_tree_desc take an oid to get the hash algorithmEric W. Biederman1-1/+1
To make it possible for git ls-tree to display the tree encoded in the hash algorithm of the oid specified to git ls-tree, update init_tree_desc to take as a parameter the oid of the tree object. Update all callers of init_tree_desc and init_tree_desc_gently to pass the oid of the tree object. Use the oid of the tree object to discover the hash algorithm of the oid and store that hash algorithm in struct tree_desc. Use the hash algorithm in decode_tree_entry and update_tree_entry_internal to handle reading a tree object encoded in a hash algorithm that differs from the repositories hash algorithm. To create the proper signatures for commit objects both versions of the commit object need to be generated and signed. After that it is a waste to throw away the work of generating the compatibility hash so update write_object_file_flags to take a compatibility hash input parameter that it can use to skip the work of generating the compatability hash. 2023-07-05git-compat-util: move alloc macros to git-compat-util.hCalvin Wan1-1/+0
alloc_nr, ALLOC_GROW, and ALLOC_GROW_BY are commonly used macros for dynamic array allocation. Moving these macros to git-compat-util.h with the other alloc macros focuses alloc.[ch] to allocation for Git objects and additionally allows us to remove inclusions to alloc.h from files that solely used the above macros. The vast majority of files including object-store.h did not need dir.h nor khash.h. Split the header into two files, and let most just depend upon object-store-ll.h, while letting the two callers that need it depend on the full object-store.h. 2023-06-21cache.h: remove this no-longer-used headerElijah Newren1-1/+1
Since this header showed up in some places besides just #include statements, update/clean-up/remove those other places as well. Note that compat/fsmonitor/fsm-path-utils-darwin.c previously got away with violating the rule that all files must start with an include of git-compat-util.h (or a short-list of alternate headers that happen to include it first). This change exposed the violation and caused it to stop building correctly; fix it by having it include git-compat-util.h first, as per policy. For the functions defined in read-cache.c, move their declarations from cache.h to a new header, read-cache-ll.h. Also move some related inline functions from cache.h to read-cache.h. The purpose of the read-cache-ll.h/read-cache.h split is that about 70% of the sites don't need the inline functions and the extra headers they include. 2023-03-28libs: use "struct repository *" argument, not "the_repository"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-2/+2
As can easily be seen from grepping in our sources, we had these uses of "the_repository" in various library code in cases where the function in question was already getting a "struct repository *" argument. Let's use that argument instead. Out of these changes only the changes to "cache-tree.c", "commit-reach.c", "shallow.c" and "upload-pack.c" would have cleanly applied before the migration away from the "repo_*()" wrapper macros in the preceding commits. The rest aren't new, as we'd previously implicitly refer to "the_repository", but it's now more obvious that we were doing the wrong thing all along, and should have used the parameter instead. The change to change "get_index_format_default(the_repository)" in "read-cache.c" to use the "r" variable instead should arguably have been part of [1], or in the subsequent cleanup in [2]. Let's do it here, as can be seen from the initial code in [3] it's not important that we use "the_repository" there, but would prefer to always use the current repository. Ever since a64215b6cd ("object.h: stop depending on cache.h; make cache.h depend on object.h", 2023-02-24), we have a few headers that could have replaced their include of cache.h with an include of object.h. Make that change now. Some C files had to start including cache.h after this change (or some smaller header it had brought in), because the C files were depending on things from cache.h but were only formerly implicitly getting cache.h through one of these headers being modified in this patch. 2023-01-08*: fix typos which duplicate a wordAndrei Rybak1-1/+1
Fix typos in code comments which repeat various words. Most of the cases are simple in that they repeat a word that usually cannot be repeated in a grammatically correct sentence. Just remove the incorrectly duplicated word in these cases and rewrap text, if needed. A tricky case is usage of "that that", which is sometimes grammatically correct. However, an instance of this in "t7527-builtin-fsmonitor.sh" doesn't need two words "that", because there is only one daemon being discussed, so replace the second "that" with "the". Reword code comment "entries exist on on-disk index" in function update_one in file cache-tree.c, by replacing incorrect preposition "on" with "in". This function has never used its repository or cache_tree parameters since it was introduced in 9ad2d5ea71 (sparse-index: loose integration with cache_tree_verify(), 2021-03-30). As that commit notes, it may eventually be extended further, and that might require looking at more data. But we can easily add them back if necessary (and the repository is even included in the index_state these days already). Change "BUG" output originally added in a97e4075a16 (Keep rename/rename conflicts of intermediate merges while doing recursive merge, 2007-03-31), and later made to say it was a "BUG" in 19c6a4f8369 (merge-recursive: do not return NULL only to cause segfault, 2010-01-21) to use the new bug() function. This gets the same job done with slightly less code, as we won't need to prefix lines with "BUG: ". More importantly we'll now log the full set of messages via trace2, before this we'd only log the one BUG() invocation. We don't replace the last "BUG()" invocation with "BUG_if_bug()", as in this case we're sure that we called bug() earlier, so there's no need to make it a conditional. While we're at it let's replace "There" with "there" in the message, i.e. not start a message with a capital letter, per the CodingGuidelines. 2022-05-23cache-tree: implement cache_tree_find_path()Derrick Stolee1-0/+27
Given a 'struct cache_tree', it may be beneficial to navigate directly to a node within that corresponds to a given path name. Create cache_tree_find_path() for this function. It returns NULL when no such path exists. The implementation is adapted from do_invalidate_path() which does a similar search but also modifies the nodes it finds along the way. The method could be implemented simply using tail-recursion, but this while loop does the same thing. This new method is not currently used, but will be in an upcoming change. Change the write_object_file() function to take an "enum object_type" instead of a "const char *type". Its callers either passed {commit,tree,blob,tag}_type and can pass the corresponding OBJ_* type instead, or were hardcoding strings like "blob". This avoids the back & forth fragility where the callers of write_object_file() would have the enum type, and convert it themselves via type_name(). We do have to now do that conversion ourselves before calling write_object_file_prepare(), but those codepaths will be similarly adjusted in subsequent commits. Remove `ensure_full_index` guard on `prime_cache_tree` and update `prime_cache_tree_rec` to correctly reconstruct sparse directory entries in the cache tree. While processing a tree's entries, `prime_cache_tree_rec` must determine whether a directory entry is sparse or not by searching for it in the index (*without* expanding the index). If a matching sparse directory index entry is found, no subtrees are added to the cache tree entry and the entry count is set to 1 (representing the sparse directory itself). Otherwise, the tree is assumed to not be sparse and its subtrees are recursively added to the cache tree. 2021-11-29reset: integrate with sparse indexVictoria Dye1-0/+1
Disable `command_requires_full_index` repo setting and add `ensure_full_index` guards around code paths that cannot yet use sparse directory index entries. `reset --soft` does not modify the index, so no compatibility changes are needed for it to function without expanding the index. For all other reset modes (`--mixed`, `--hard`, `--keep`, `--merge`), the full index is expanded to prevent cache tree corruption and invalid variable accesses. Additionally, the `read_cache()` check verifying an uncorrupted index is moved after argument parsing and preparing the repo settings. The index is not used by the preceding argument handling, but `read_cache()` must be run *after* enabling sparse index for the command (so that the index is not expanded unnecessarily) and *before* using the index for reset (so that it is verified as uncorrupted). Fix a regression in the error output emitted when .git/objects can't be written to. Before 9c4d6c0297b (cache-tree: Write updated cache-tree after commit, 2014-07-13) we'd emit only one "insufficient permission" error, now we'll do so again. The cause is rather straightforward, we've got WRITE_TREE_SILENT for the use-case of wanting to prepare an index silently, quieting any permission etc. error output. Then when we attempt to update to that (possibly broken) index we'll run into the same errors again. But with 9c4d6c0297b the gap between the cache-tree API and the object store wasn't closed in terms of asking write_object_file() to be silent. I.e. post-9c4d6c0297b the first call is to prepare_index(), and after that we'll call prepare_to_commit(). We only want verbose error output from the latter. So let's add and use that facility with a corresponding HASH_SILENT flag, its only user is cache-tree.c's update_one(), which will set it if its "WRITE_TREE_SILENT" flag is set. In a sparse index it is possible for the tree that is being verified to be freed while it is being verified. This happens when the index is sparse but the cache tree is not and index_name_pos() looks up a path from the cache tree that is a descendant of a sparse index entry. That triggers a call to ensure_full_index() which frees the cache tree that is being verified. Carrying on trying to verify the tree after this results in a use-after-free bug. Instead restart the verification if a sparse index is converted to a full index. This bug is triggered by a call to reset_head() in "git rebase --apply". Update 'git commit' to allow using the sparse-index in memory without expanding to a full one. The only place that had an ensure_full_index() call was in cache_tree_update(). The recursive algorithm for update_one() was already updated in 2de37c536 (cache-tree: integrate with sparse directory entries, 2021-03-03) to handle sparse directory entries in the index. Most of this change involves testing different command-line options that allow specifying which on-disk changes should be included in the commit. This includes no options (only take currently-staged changes), -a (take all tracked changes), and --include (take a list of specific changes). To simplify testing that these options do not expand the index, update the test that previously verified that 'git status' does not expand the index with a helper method, ensure_not_expanded(). This allows 'git commit' to operate much faster when the sparse-checkout cone is much smaller than the full list of files at HEAD. I compared this to the result if the index only contained the paths in the sparse-checkout definition and found the theoretical optimum to be 120ms, so the out-of-cone paths only add a 12% overhead. 2021-03-30sparse-index: convert from full to sparseDerrick Stolee1-0/+3
If we have a full index, then we can convert it to a sparse index by replacing directories outside of the sparse cone with sparse directory entries. The convert_to_sparse() method does this, when the situation is appropriate. For now, we avoid converting the index to a sparse index if: 1. the index is split. 2. the index is already sparse. 3. sparse-checkout is disabled. 4. sparse-checkout does not use cone mode. Finally, we currently limit the conversion to when the GIT_TEST_SPARSE_INDEX environment variable is enabled. A mode using Git config will be added in a later change. The trickiest thing about this conversion is that we might not be able to mark a directory as a sparse directory just because it is outside the sparse cone. There might be unmerged files within that directory, so we need to look for those. Also, if there is some strange reason why a file is not marked with CE_SKIP_WORKTREE, then we should give up on converting that directory. There is still hope that some of its subdirectories might be able to convert to sparse, so we keep looking deeper. The conversion process is assisted by the cache-tree extension. This is calculated from the full index if it does not already exist. We then abandon the cache-tree as it no longer applies to the newly-sparse index. Thus, this cache-tree will be recalculated in every sparse-full-sparse round-trip until we integrate the cache-tree extension with the sparse index. Some Git commands use the index after writing it. For example, 'git add' will update the index, then write it to disk, then read its entries to report information. To keep the in-memory index in a full state after writing, we re-expand it to a full one after the write. This is wasteful for commands that only write the index and do not read from it again, but that is only the case until we make those commands "sparse aware." We can compare the behavior of the sparse-index in t1092-sparse-checkout-compability.sh by using GIT_TEST_SPARSE_INDEX=1 when operating on the 'sparse-index' repo. We can also compare the two sparse repos directly, such as comparing their indexes (when expanded to full in the case of the 'sparse-index' repo). We also verify that the index is actually populated with sparse directory entries. The 'checkout and reset (mixed)' test is marked for failure when comparing a sparse repo to a full repo, but we can compare the two sparse-checkout cases directly to ensure that we are not changing the behavior when using a sparse index. The verify_cache() method takes an array of cache entries and a count, but these are always provided directly from a struct index_state. Use a pointer to the full structure instead. There is a subtle point when istate->cache_nr is zero that subtracting one will underflow. This triggers a failure in t0000-basic.sh, among others. Use "i + 1 < istate->cache_nr" to avoid these strange comparisons. Convert i to be unsigned as well, which also removes the potential signed overflow in the unlikely case that cache_nr is over 2.1 billion entries. The 'funny' variable has a maximum value of 11, so making it unsigned does not change anything of importance. The previous change reduced time spent in strlen() while comparing consecutive paths in verify_cache(), but we can do better. The conditional checks the existence of a directory separator at the correct location, but only after doing a string comparison. Swap the order to be logically equivalent but perform fewer string comparisons. To test the effect on performance, I used a repository with over three million paths in the index. The cache-tree datastructure is used to speed up the comparison between the HEAD and the index, and when the index is updated by a cherry-pick (for example), a tree object that would represent the paths in the index in a directory is constructed in-core, to see if such a tree object exists already in the object store. When the lazy-fetch mechanism was introduced, we converted this "does the tree exist?" check into an "if it does not, and if we lazily cloned, see if the remote has it" call by mistake. Since the whole point of this check is to repair the cache-tree by recording an already existing tree object opportunistically, we shouldn't even try to fetch one from the remote. Pass the OBJECT_INFO_SKIP_FETCH_OBJECT flag to make sure we only check for existence in the local object store without triggering the lazy fetch mechanism. As the previous commit shows, the presence of an oid in each level of the traverse_info is confusing and ultimately not necessary. Let's drop it to make it clear that it will not always be set (as well as convince us that it's unused, and let the compiler catch any merges with other branches that do add new uses). Since the oid is part of name_entry, we'll actually stop embedding a name_entry entirely, and instead just separately hold the pathname, its length, and the mode. This makes the resulting code slightly more verbose as we have to pass those elements around individually. But it also makes it more clear what each code path is going to use (and in most of the paths, we really only care about the pathname itself). A few of these conversions are noisier than they need to be, as they also take the opportunity to rename "len" to "namelen" for clarity (especially where we also have "pathlen" or "ce_len" alongside). Instead of using the repository_format_partial_clone global and fetch_objects() directly, let's use has_promisor_remote() and promisor_remote_get_direct(). This way all the configured promisor remotes will be taken into account, not only the one specified by extensions.partialClone. Also when cloning or fetching using a partial clone filter, remote.origin.promisor will be set to "true" instead of setting extensions.partialClone to "origin". When parsing a tree, we read the object ID directly out of the tree buffer. This is normally fine, but such an object ID cannot be used with oidcpy, which copies GIT_MAX_RAWSZ bytes, because if we are using SHA-1, there may not be that many bytes to copy. Instead, store the object ID in a separate struct member. Since we can no longer efficiently compute the path length, store that information as well in struct name_entry. Ensure we only copy the object ID into the new buffer if the path length is nonzero, as some callers will pass us an empty path with no object ID following it, and we will not want to read past the end of the buffer. In a partial clone, whenever a sparse checkout occurs, the existence of all blobs in the index is verified, whether they are included or excluded by the .git/info/sparse-checkout specification. This significantly degrades performance because a lazy fetch occurs whenever the existence of a missing blob is checked. This is because cache_tree_update() checks the existence of all objects in the index, whether or not CE_SKIP_WORKTREE is set on them. Teach cache_tree_update() to skip checking CE_SKIP_WORKTREE objects when the repository is a partial clone. This improves performance for sparse checkout and also other operations that use cache_tree_update(). Instead of completely removing the check, an argument could be made that the check should instead be replaced by a check that the blob is promised, but for performance reasons, I decided not to do this. If the user needs to verify the repository, it can be done using fsck (which will notify if a tree points to a missing and non-promised blob, whether the blob is included or excluded by the sparse-checkout specification). Using the more restrictive oideq() should, in the long run, give the compiler more opportunities to optimize these callsites. For now, this conversion should be a complete noop with respect to the generated code. The result is also perhaps a little more readable, as it avoids the "zero is equal" idiom. Since it's so prevalent in C, I think seasoned programmers tend not to even notice it anymore, but it can sometimes make for awkward double negations (e.g., we can drop a few !!oidcmp() instances here). This patch was generated almost entirely by the included coccinelle patch. This mechanical conversion should be completely safe, because we check explicitly for cases where oidcmp() is compared to 0, which is what oideq() is doing under the hood. Note that we don't have to catch "!oidcmp()" separately; coccinelle's standard isomorphisms make sure the two are treated equivalently. I say "almost" because I did hand-edit the coccinelle output to fix up a few style violations (it mostly keeps the original formatting, but sometimes unwraps long lines). 2018-01-19read-cache: fix reading the shared index for other reposThomas Gummerer1-1/+1
read_index_from() takes a path argument for the location of the index file. For reading the shared index in split index mode however it just ignores that path argument, and reads it from the gitdir of the current repository. This works as long as an index in the_repository is read. Once that changes, such as when we read the index of a submodule, or of a different working tree than the current one, the gitdir of the_repository will no longer contain the appropriate shared index, and git will fail to read it. For example t3007-ls-files-recurse-submodules.sh was broken with GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX set in 188dce131f ("ls-files: use repository object", 2017-06-22), and t7814-grep-recurse-submodules.sh was also broken in a similar manner, probably by introducing struct repository there, although I didn't track down the exact commit for that. be489d02d2 ("revision.c: --indexed-objects add objects from all worktrees", 2017-08-23) breaks with split index mode in a similar manner, not erroring out when it can't read the index, but instead carrying on with pruning, without taking the index of the worktree into account. Fix this by passing an additional gitdir parameter to read_index_from, to indicate where it should look for and read the shared index from. read_cache_from() defaults to using the gitdir of the_repository. As it is mostly a convenience macro, having to pass get_git_dir() for every call seems overkill, and if necessary users can have more control by using read_index_from(). After we have taken the lock using `LOCK_DIE_ON_ERROR`, we know that `newfd` is non-negative. So when we check for exactly that property before calling `write_locked_index()`, the outcome is guaranteed. If we write and commit successfully, we set `newfd = -1`, so that we can later avoid calling `rollback_lock_file` on an already-committed lock. But we might just as well unconditionally call `rollback_lock_file()` -- it will be a no-op if we have already committed. All in all, we use `newfd` as a bool and the only benefit we get from it is that we can avoid calling a no-op. Remove `newfd` so that we have one variable less to reason about. Now that it's safe to declare a "struct lock_file" on the stack, we can do so (and avoid an intentional leak). These leaks were found by running t0000 and t0001 under valgrind (though certainly other similar leaks exist and just don't happen to be exercised by those tests). Initializing the lock_file's inner tempfile with NULL is not strictly necessary in these cases, but it's a good practice to model. It means that if we were to call a function like rollback_lock_file() on a lock that was never taken in the first place, it becomes a quiet noop (rather than undefined behavior). Likewise, it's always safe to rollback_lock_file() on a file that has already been committed or deleted, since that operation is a noop on an inactive lockfile (and that's why the case in config.c can drop the "if (lock)" check as we move away from using a pointer). If we failed to write our new index file, we rollback our lockfile to remove the temporary index. But if we fail before we even get to the write step (because reading the old index failed), we leave the lockfile in place, which makes no sense. In practice this hasn't been a big deal because failing at write_index_as_tree() typically results in the whole program exiting (and thus the tempfile handler kicking in and cleaning up the files). 2017-04-23cache-tree: reject entries with null sha1Jeff King1-1/+3
We generally disallow null sha1s from entering the index, due to 4337b5856 (do not write null sha1s to on-disk index, 2012-07-28). However, we loosened that in 83bd7437c (write_index: optionally allow broken null sha1s, 2013-08-27) so that tools like filter-branch could be used to repair broken history. However, we should make sure that these broken entries do not get propagated into new trees. For most entries, we'd catch them with the missing-object check (since presumably the null sha1 does not exist in our object database). But gitlink entries do not need reachability, so we may blindly copy the entry into a bogus tree. This patch rejects all null sha1s (with the same "invalid entry" message that missing objects get) when building trees from the index. It does so even for non-gitlinks, and even when "write-tree" is given the --missing-ok flag. The null sha1 is a special sentinel value that is already rejected in trees by fsck; whether the object exists or not, it is an error to put it in a tree. Note that for this to work, we must also avoid reusing an existing cache-tree that contains the null sha1. This patch does so by just refusing to write out any cache tree when the index contains a null sha1. This is blunter than we need to be; we could just reject the subtree that contains the offending entry. But it's not worth the complexity. The behavior is unchanged unless you have a broken index entry, and even then we'd refuse the whole index write unless the emergency GIT_ALLOW_NULL_SHA1 is in use. And even then the end result is only a performance drop (any write-tree will have to generate the whole cache-tree from scratch). The tests bear some explanation. The existing test in t7009 doesn't catch this problem, because our index-filter runs "git rm --cached", which will try to rewrite the updated index and barf on the bogus entry. So we never even make it to write-tree. The new test there adds a noop index-filter, which does show the problem. The new tests in t1601 are slightly redundant with what filter-branch is doing under the hood in t7009. But as they're much more direct, they're easier to reason about. And should filter-branch ever change or go away, we'd want to make sure that these plumbing commands behave sanely. Commit 3cf773e (cache-tree: fix writing cache-tree when CE_REMOVE is present - 2012-12-16) skips i-t-a entries when building trees objects from the index. Unfortunately it may skip too much. The code in question checks if an entry is an i-t-a one, then no tree entry will be written. But it does not take into account that directories can also be written with the same code. Suppose we have this in the index. a-file subdir/file1 subdir/file2 subdir/file3 the-last-file We write an entry for a-file as normal and move on to subdir/file1, where we realize the entry name for this level is simply just "subdir", write down an entry for "subdir" then jump three items ahead to the-last-file. That is what happens normally when the first file in subdir is not an i-t-a entry. If subdir/file1 is an i-t-a, because of the broken condition in this code, we still think "subdir" is an i-t-a file and not writing "subdir" down and jump to the-last-file. The result tree now only has two items: a-file and the-last-file. subdir should be there too (even though it only records two sub-entries, file2 and file3). If the i-t-a entry is subdir/file2 or subdir/file3, this is not a problem because we jump over them anyway. Which may explain why the bug is hidden for nearly four years. Fix it by making sure we only skip i-t-a entries when the entry in question is actual an index entry, not a directory. The loop in cache-tree's update_one iterates over all the entries in the index. For each one, we find the cache-tree subtree which represents our path (creating it if necessary), and then recurse into update_one again. The return value we get is the number of index entries that belonged in that subtree. So for example, with entries: a/one a/two b/one We start by processing the first entry, "a/one". We would find the subtree for "a" and recurse into update_one. That would then handle "a/one" and "a/two", and return the value 2. The parent function then skips past the 2 handled entries, and we continue by processing "b/one". If the recursed-into update_one ever returns 0, then we make no forward progress in our loop. We would process "a/one" over and over, infinitely. This should not happen normally. Any subtree we create must have at least one path in it (the one that we are processing!). However, we may also reuse a cache-tree entry we found in the on-disk index. For the same reason, this should also never have zero entries. However, certain buggy versions of libgit2 could produce such bogus cache-tree records. The libgit2 bug has since been fixed, but it does not hurt to protect ourselves against bogus input coming from the on-disk data structures. Note that this is not a die("BUG") or assert, because it is not an internal bug, but rather a corrupted on-disk structure. It's possible that we could even recover from it (by throwing out the bogus cache-tree entry), but it is not worth the effort; the important thing is that we report an error instead of looping infinitely. We punt from repairing the cache-tree during a branch switching if it involves having to create a new tree object that does not yet exist in the object store. "mkdir dir && >dir/file && git add dir" followed by "git checkout" is one example, when a tree that records the state of such "dir/" is not in the object store. However, after discovering that we do not have a tree object that records the state of "dir/", the caller failed to remember the fact that it noticed the cache-tree entry it received for "dir/" is invalidated, it already knows it should not be populating the level that has "dir/" as its immediate subdirectory, and it is not an error at all for the sublevel cache-tree entry gave it a bogus object name it shouldn't even look at. This led the caller to detect and report a non-existent error. The end result was the same and we avoided stuffing a non-existent tree to the cache-tree, but we shouldn't have issued an alarming error message to the user. I attempted to make index_state->cache[] a "const struct cache_entry **" to find out how existing entries in index are modified and where. The question I have is what do we do if we really need to keep track of on-disk changes in the index. The result is - diff-lib.c: setting CE_UPTODATE - name-hash.c: setting CE_HASHED - preload-index.c, read-cache.c, unpack-trees.c and builtin/update-index: obvious - entry.c: write_entry() may refresh the checked out entry via fill_stat_cache_info(). This causes "non-const struct cache_entry *" in builtin/apply.c, builtin/checkout-index.c and builtin/checkout.c - builtin/ls-files.c: --with-tree changes stagemask and may set CE_UPDATE Of these, write_entry() and its call sites are probably most interesting because it modifies on-disk info. But this is stat info and can be retrieved via refresh, at least for porcelain commands. Other just uses ce_flags for local purposes. So, keeping track of "dirty" entries is just a matter of setting a flag in index modification functions exposed by read-cache.c. Except unpack-trees, the rest of the code base does not do anything funny behind read-cache's back. The actual patch is less valueable than the summary above. Originally, "git add -N" was introduced to help users from forgetting to add new files to the index before they ran "git commit -a". As an attempt to help them further so that they do not forget to say "-a", "git commit" to commit the index as-is was taught to error out, reminding the user that they may have forgotten to add the final contents of the paths before running the command. This turned out to be a false "safety" that is useless. If the user made changes to already tracked paths and paths added with "git add -N", and then ran "git add" to register the final contents of the paths added with "git add -N", "git commit" will happily create a commit out of the index, without including the local changes made to the already tracked paths. It was not a useful "safety" measure to prevent "forgetful" mistakes from happening. It turns out that this behaviour is not just a useless false "safety", but actively hurts use cases of "git add -N" that were discovered later and have become popular, namely, to tell Git to be aware of these paths added by "git add -N", so that commands like "git status" and "git diff" would include them in their output, even though the user is not interested in including them in the next commit they are going to make. Fix this ancient UI mistake, and instead make a commit from the index ignoring the paths added by "git add -N" without adding real contents. Not that anybody should ever get it, but somebody did (probably because of a flaky filesystem, but whatever). And each time I see an error message that I haven't seen before, I decide that next time it will look better. So this makes us write more relevant information about exactly which file ended up having issues with a missing object. When running "diff-index --cached" after making a change to only a small portion of the index, there is no point unpacking unchanged subtrees into the index recursively, only to find that all entries match anyway. Tweak unpack_trees() logic that is used to read in the tree object to catch the case where the tree entry we are looking at matches the index as a whole by looking at the cache-tree. This converts the index explicitly on read and write to its on-disk format, allowing the in-core format to contain more flags, and be simpler. In particular, the in-core format is now host-endian (as opposed to the on-disk one that is network endian in order to be able to be shared across machines) and as a result we can dispense with all the htonl/ntohl on accesses to the cache_entry fields. This abstracts away the size of the hash values when copying them from memory location to memory location, much as the introduction of hashcmp abstracted away hash value comparsion. A few call sites were using char* rather than unsigned char* so I added the cast rather than open hashcpy to be void*. This is a reasonable tradeoff as most call sites already use unsigned char* and the existing hashcmp is also declared to be unsigned char*. The "bind" commit can express an aggregation of multiple projects into a single commit. In such an organization, there would be one project, root of whose tree object is at the same level of the root of the aggregated projects, and other projects have their toplevel in separate subdirectories. You would first read-tree the primary project, and then graft the subprojects under their appropriate location using read-tree --prefix=<subdir>/ repeatedly. The cache_tree data structure is to cache tree object names that would result from the current index file. The idea is to have an optional file to record each tree object name that corresponds to a directory path in the cache when we run write_cache(), and read it back when we run read_cache(). During various index manupulations, we selectively invalidate the parts so that the next write-tree can bypass regenerating tree objects for unchanged parts of the directory hierarchy. We could perhaps make the cache-tree data an optional part of the index file, but that would involve the index format updates, so unless we need it for performance reasons, the current plan is to use a separate file, $GIT_DIR/index.aux to store this information and link it with the index file with the checksum that is already used for index file integrity check.
