We want to specify a compatibility hash for testing interactions for
SHA-256 repositories where we have SHA-1 compatibility enabled. Allow
the user to specify this scenario in the test suite by setting
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_HASH to "sha256:sha1".
Note that this will get passed into GIT_DEFAULT_HASH, which Git itself
does not presently support. However, we will support this in a future
commit.
Since we'll now want to know the value for a specific version, let's add
the ability to specify either the storage hash (in this case, SHA-256)
or the compatibility hash (SHA-1). We use a different value for the
compatibility hash that will be enabled for all repositories
(test_repo_compat_hash_algo) versus the one that is used individually in
some tests (test_compat_hash_algo), since we want to still run those
individual tests without requiring that the testsuite be run fully in a
compatibility mode.
In some cases, we'll need to adjust our test suite to work in a proper
way with a compatibility hash. For example, in such a case, we'll only
use pack index v3, since v1 and v2 lack support for multiple algorithms.
Since we won't want to write those older formats, we'll need to skip
tests that do so. Let's add a COMPAT_HASH prerequisite for this
purpose.
Finally, in this scenario, we can no longer rely on having broken
objects work since we lack compatibility mappings to rewrite objects in
the repository. Add a prerequisite, BROKEN_OBJECTS, that we define in
terms of COMPAT_HASH and checks to see if creating deliberately broken
objects is possible, so that we can disable these tests if not.

Right now, the default compile-time hash is SHA-1. However, in the
future, this might change and it would be helpful to gracefully handle
this case in our testsuite.
To avoid making these assumptions, let's introduce a variable that
contains the built-in default hash and use it in our setup code as the
fallback value if no hash was explicitly set. For now, this is always
SHA-1, but in a future commit, we'll allow adjusting this and the
variable will be more useful.
To allow us to make our tests more robust, allow test_oid to take the
--hash=builtin option to specify this hash, whatever it is.
Additionally, add a DEFAULT_HASH_ALGORITHM prerequisite to check for the
compile-time hash.

The "seq" tool has a "-f" option to produce printf-style formatted
lines. Let's teach our test_seq helper the same trick. This lets us get
rid of some shell loops in test snippets (which are particularly verbose
in our test suite because we have to "|| return 1" to keep the &&-chain
going).
This converts a few call-sites I found by grepping around the test
suite. A few notes on these:
- In "seq", the format specifier is a "%g" float. Since test_seq only
supports integers, I've kept the more natural "%d" (which is what
these call sites were using already).
- Like "seq", test_seq automatically adds a newline to the specified
format. This is what all callers are doing already except for t0021,
but there we do not care about the exact format. We are just trying
to printf a large number of bytes to a file. It's not worth
complicating other callers or adding an option to avoid the newline
in that caller.
- Most conversions are just replacing a shell loop (which does get rid
of an extra fork, since $() requires a subshell). In t0612 we can
replace an awk invocation, which I think makes the end result more
readable, as there's less quoting.
- In t7422 we can replace one loop, but sadly we have to leave the
loop directly above it. This is because that earlier loop wants to
include the seq value twice in the output, which test_seq does not
support (nor does regular seq). If you run:
test_seq -f "foo-%d %d" 10
the second "%d" will always be the empty string. You might naively
think that test_seq could add some extra arguments, like:
# 3 ought to be enough for anyone...
printf "$fmt\n" "$i "$i" $i"
but that just triggers printf to format multiple lines, one per
extra set of arguments.
So we'd have to actually parse the format string, figure out how
many "%" placeholders are there, and then feed it that many
instances of the sequence number. The complexity isn't worth it.

The `test_readlink()` helper function reads a symbolic link and returns
the path it is pointing to. It is thus equivalent to the readlink(1)
utility, which isn't available on all supported platforms. As such, it
is implemented using Perl so that we can use it even on platforms where
the shell utility isn't available.
While using readlink(1) is not an option, what we can do is to implement
the logic ourselves in our test-tool. Do so, which allows a bunch of
tests to pass when Perl is not available.

The `test_copy_bytes()` helper function copies up to N bytes from stdin
to stdout. This is implemented using Perl, but it can be trivially
adapted to instead use dd(1).
Refactor the helper accordingly, which allows a bunch of tests to pass
when Perl is not available.

We have a couple of helper functions that translate characters, e.g.
from LF to NUL or NUL to 'Q' and vice versa. These helpers use Perl
scripts, but they can be trivially adapted to instead use tr(1).
Note that one specialty here is the handling of NUL characters in tr(1),
which historically wasn't implemented correctly on all platforms. But
quoting tr(1p):
It was considered that automatically stripping NUL characters from
the input was not correct functionality. However, the removal of -n
in a later proposal does not remove the requirement that tr
correctly process NUL characters in its input stream.
So when tr(1) is implemented following the POSIX standard then it is
expected to handle the transliteration of NUL just fine.
Refactor the helpers accordingly, which allows a bunch of tests to pass
when Perl is not available.

Allow test_lazy_prereq script to signal a programming error by
exiting with status 125 (like how bisect scripts do). This is used
to signal a deprecated-and-then-removed prerequisite that should
never be used in tests anymore.

As some issues that can happen with a Git client can be operating system
specific, it can be useful for a server to know which OS a client is
using. In the same way it can be useful for a client to know which OS
a server is using.
Our current agent capability is in the form of "package/version" (e.g.,
"git/1.8.3.1"). Let's extend it to include the operating system name (os)
i.e in the form "package/version-os" (e.g., "git/1.8.3.1-Linux").
Including OS details in the agent capability simplifies implementation,
maintains backward compatibility, avoids introducing a new capability,
encourages adoption across Git-compatible software, and enhances
debugging by providing complete environment information without affecting
functionality. The operating system name is retrieved using the 'sysname'
field of the `uname(2)` system call or its equivalent.
However, there are differences between `uname(1)` (command-line utility)
and `uname(2)` (system call) outputs on Windows. These discrepancies
complicate testing on Windows platforms. For example:
- `uname(1)` output: MINGW64_NT-10.0-20348.3.4.10-87d57229.x86_64\
.2024-02-14.20:17.UTC.x86_64
- `uname(2)` output: Windows.10.0.20348
On Windows, uname(2) is not actually system-supplied but is instead
already faked up by Git itself. We could have overcome the test issue
on Windows by implementing a new `uname` subcommand in `test-tool`
using uname(2), but except uname(2), which would be tested against
itself, there would be nothing platform specific, so it's just simpler
to disable the tests on Windows.

The new '--name-hash-version' option for 'git repack' is a simple
pass-through to the underlying 'git pack-objects' subcommand. However,
this subcommand may have other options and a temporary filename as part
of the subcommand execution that may not be predictable or could change
over time.
The existing test_subcommand method requires an exact list of arguments
for the subcommand. This is too rigid for our needs here, so create a
new method, test_subcommand_flex. Use it to check that the
--name-hash-version option is passing through.
Since we are modifying the 'git repack' command, let's bring its usage
in line with the Documentation's synopsis. This removes it from the
allow list in t0450 so it will remain in sync in the future.

We have a function to check whether LSan logged any leaks. It returns
success for no leaks, and non-zero otherwise. This is the simplest thing
for its callers, who want to say "if no leaks then return early". But
because it's implemented as a shell pipeline, you end up with the
awkward:
! find ... |
xargs grep leaks |
grep -v false-positives
where the "!" is actually negating the final grep. Switch the return
value (and name) to return success when there are leaks. This should
make the code a little easier to read, and the negation in the callers
still reads pretty naturally.

If you are trying to find and fix leaks in a large test script, it can
be overwhelming to see the leak logs for every test at once. The
previous commit let you use "--immediate" to see the logs after the
first failing test, but this isn't always the first leak. As discussed
there, we may see leaks from previous tests that didn't happen to fail.
To catch those, let's check for any logs that appeared after each test
snippet is run, meaning that in a SANITIZE=leak build, any leak is an
immediate failure of the test snippet.
This check is mostly free in non-leak builds (just a "test -z"), and
only a few extra processes in a leak build, so I don't think the
overhead should matter (if it does, we could probably optimize for the
common "no logs" case without even spending a process).

Most test snippets are wrapped in single quotes, like:
test_expect_success 'some description' '
do_something
'
This sometimes makes the snippets awkward to write, because you can't
easily use single quotes within them. We sometimes work around this with
$SQ, or by loosening regexes to use "." instead of a literal quote, or
by using double quotes when we'd prefer to use single-quotes (and just
adding extra backslash-escapes to avoid interpolation).
This commit adds another option: feeding the snippet via the function's
stdin. This doesn't conflict with anything the snippet would want to do,
because we always redirect its stdin from /dev/null anyway (which we'll
continue to do).
A few notes on the implementation:
- it would be nice to push this down into test_run_, but we can't, as
test_expect_success and test_expect_failure want to see the actual
script content to report it for verbose-mode. A helper function
limits the amount of duplication in those callers here.
- The helper function is a little awkward to call, as you feed it the
name of the variable you want to set. The more natural thing in
shell would be command substitution like:
body=$(body_or_stdin "$2")
but that loses trailing whitespace. There are tricks around this,
like:
body=$(body_or_stdin "$2"; printf .)
body=${body%.}
but we'd prefer to keep such tricks in the helper, not in each
caller.
- I implemented the helper using a sequence of "read" calls. Together
with "-r" and unsetting the IFS, this preserves incoming whitespace.
An alternative is to use "cat" (which then requires the gross "."
trick above). But this saves us a process, which is probably a good
thing. The "read" builtin does use more read() syscalls than
necessary (one per byte), but that is almost certainly a win over a
separate process.
Both are probably slower than passing a single-quoted string, but
the difference is lost in the noise for a script that I converted as
an experiment.
- I handle test_expect_success and test_expect_failure here. If we
like this style, we could easily extend it to other spots (e.g.,
lazy_prereq bodies) on top of this patch.
- even though we are using "local", we have to be careful about our
variable names. Within test_expect_success, any variable we declare
with local will be seen as local by the test snippets themselves (so
it wouldn't persist between tests like normal variables would).

The git-http-fetch(1) command accepts a `--packfile=` option, which
allows the user to specify that it shall fetch a specific packfile,
only. The parameter here is the hash of the packfile, which is specific
to the object hash used by the repository. This requirement is implicit
though via our use of `parse_oid_hex()`, which internally uses
`the_repository`.
The git-http-fetch(1) command allows for there to be no repository
though, which only exists such that we can show usage via the "-h"
option. In that case though, starting with c8aed5e8da (repository: stop
setting SHA1 as the default object hash, 2024-05-07), `the_repository`
does not have its object hash initialized anymore and thus we would
crash when trying to parse the object ID outside of a repository.
Fix this issue by dying immediately when we see a "--packfile="
parameter when outside a Git repository. This is not a functional
regression as we would die later on with the same error anyway.
Add a test to detect the segfault. We use the "nongit" function to do
so, which we need to allow-list in `test_must_fail ()`.

One of the tests we'll want to add for pseudo-merge bitmaps needs to be
able to generate a large number of commits at a specific date.
Support the `--notick` option (with identical semantics to the
`--notick` option for `test_commit()`) within `test_commit_bulk` as a
prerequisite for that. Callers can then set the various _DATE variables
themselves.

With release 2.44 we got rid of all uses of test_i18ngrep and there
is no in-flight topic that adds a new use of it. Make a call to
test_i18ngrep a hard failure, so that we can remove it at the end
of this release cycle.

Introduce a new GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_REF_FORMAT environment variable that
lets developers run the test suite with a different default ref format
without impacting the ref format used by non-test Git invocations. This
is modeled after GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_OBJECT_FORMAT, which does the same
thing for the repository's object format.
Adapt the setup of the `REFFILES` test prerequisite to be conditionally
set based on the default ref format.

In the recent commit 2e87fca189 (test framework: further deprecate
test_i18ngrep, 2023-10-31), the test_i18ngrep function was
deprecated, and all the callers were updated to call the test_grep
function instead. But test_grep inherited an error message that
still refers to test_i18ngrep by mistake. Correct it so that a
broken call to the test_grep will identify itself as such.

Introduce a helper function which looks for a specific (category, key,
value) tuple in the output of a trace2 event stream.
We will use this function in a future patch to ensure that the expected
number of objects are reused from an expected number of packs.

Convert tests that use `test_path_is_file` and `test_path_is_missing` to
instead use a set of helpers `test_ref_exists` and `test_ref_missing`.
These helpers are implemented via the newly introduced `git show-ref
--exists` command. Thus, we can avoid intimate knowledge of how the ref
backend stores references on disk.

As an attempt to come up with a useful mechanism to ensure that
certain messages are left untranslated [*], we earlier wrote
GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON off as a failed experiment.
But the output from the test helper was easier to use while
debugging failed tests, compared to the same test writtein with the
plain-vanilla "grep". Especially when a test that expects a certain
string to appear in the output (e.g. "this test must fail with this
message") fails, "grep message output" would just silently fail and
in a &&-chained sequence of commands, it is hard to tell which step
failed. test_i18ngrep explicitly said "we wanted to see a line that
match this pattern but did not see a hit in this file".
What we have as test_i18ngrep in our tree still retains this verbose
output (even though we got rid of the "poison" support). Let's
rename it to test_grep (because it is no longer about i18n at all)
and then make test_i18ngrep a thin wrapper around it. Existing
callers of test_i18ngrep can be mechanically rewritten to instead
use test_grep over time, but it does not have to be done in this
commit.
[Footnote]
* The idea was that human-facing messages are often translated, but
there are messages that should never be translated. We use
"grep" only for the latter kind of messages, and then run tests
in "poison" mode that spew garbage for translatable messages. If
such a test run fails, it means these messages tested with "grep"
were marked for translation by mistake. test_i18ngrep was to be
used for other messages that are to be translated, and was to
always "succeed" when runing under the "poison" mode.

"git rebase -i" with a series of squash/fixup, when one of the
steps stopped in conflicts and ended up getting skipped, did not
handle the accumulated commit log messages, which has been
corrected.

During a series of "fixup" and/or "squash" commands, the interactive
rebase accumulates a commit message from all the commits that are being
squashed together. If one of the commits has conflicts when it is picked
and the user chooses to skip that commit then we need to remove that
commit's message from accumulated messages. To do this 15ef69314d5
(rebase --skip: clean up commit message after a failed fixup/squash,
2018-04-27) updated commit_staged_changes() to reset the accumulated
message to the commit message of HEAD (which does not contain the
message from the skipped commit) when the last command was "fixup" or
"squash" and there are no staged changes. Unfortunately the code to do
this contains two bugs.
(1) If parse_head() fails we pass an invalid pointer to
unuse_commit_buffer().
(2) The reconstructed message uses the entire commit buffer from HEAD
including the headers, rather than just the commit message.
The first issue is fixed by splitting up the "if" condition into several
statements each with its own error handling. The second issue is fixed
by finding the start of the commit message within the commit buffer
using find_commit_subject().
The existing test added by 15ef69314d5 is modified to show the effect of
this bug. The bug is triggered when skipping the first command in the
chain (as the test does before this commit) but the effect is hidden
because opts->current_fixup_count is set to zero which leads
update_squash_messages() to recreate the squash message file from
scratch overwriting the bad message created by
commit_staged_changes(). The test is also updated to explicitly check
the commit messages rather than relying on grep to ensure they do not
contain any stray commit headers.
To check the commit message the function test_commit_message() is moved
from t3437-rebase-fixup-options.sh to test-lib.sh. As the function is
now publicly available it is updated to provide better error detection
and avoid overwriting the commonly used files "actual" and "expect".
Support for reading the expected commit message from stdin is also
added.

In line with our other helper functions for paths, let's add a function
to check whether a path is executable, and if not, print a suitable
error message. Document this function, and note that it must only be
used under the POSIXPERM prerequisite, since it doesn't otherwise work
on Windows.

Update 'do_git_config_sequence()' to read the worktree config from
'config.worktree' in 'opts->git_dir' rather than the gitdir of
'the_repository'.
The worktree config is loaded from the path returned by
'git_pathdup("config.worktree")', the 'config.worktree' relative to the
gitdir of 'the_repository'. If loading the config for a submodule, this path
is incorrect, since 'the_repository' is the superproject. 'opts->git_dir' is
the gitdir of the submodule being configured, so the config file in that
location should be read instead.
To ensure the use of 'opts->git_dir' is safe, require that 'opts->git_dir'
is set if-and-only-if 'opts->commondir' is set (rather than "only-if" as it
is now). In all current usage of 'config_options', these values are set
together, so the stricter check does not change any behavior.
Finally, add tests to 't3007-ls-files-recurse-submodules.sh' to verify the
corrected config is loaded. Use 'ls-files' to test this because, unlike some
other '--recurse-submodules' commands, 'ls-files' parses the config of the
submodule in the same process as the superproject (via 'show_submodule()' ->
'repo_read_index()' -> 'prepare_repo_settings()'). As a result,
'the_repository' points to the config of the superproject but the
commondir/gitdir in the config sequence will be that of the submodule,
providing the exact scenario needed to verify this patch.
The first test ('--recurse-submodules parses submodule repo config') checks
that the submodule's *repo* config is read when running 'ls-files' on the
superproject; this confirms already-working behavior, serving as a reference
for how worktree config parsing should behave. The second test
('--recurse-submodules parses submodule worktree config') tests the same
scenario as the previous but instead using the *worktree* config,
demonstrating the corrected behavior. The 'test_config' helper is extended
for this case so that it properly applies the '--worktree' option to the
configure/unconfigure operations it performs.
Note that, although the submodule worktree config is now parsed instead of
the superproject's, 'extensions.worktreeConfig' in the superproject still
controls whether or not the worktree config is enabled at all in the
submodule. This will be fixed in a later patch.

We have a small helper function called "verbose", with the idea that you
can write:
verbose foo
to get a message to stderr when the "foo" command fails, even if it does
not produce any output itself. This goes back to 8ad1652418 (t5304: use
helper to report failure of "test foo = bar", 2014-10-10). It does work,
but overall it has not been a big success for two reasons:
1. Test writers have to remember to put it there (and the resulting
test code is longer as a result).
2. It doesn't handle the opposite case (we expect "foo" to fail, but
it succeeds), leading to inconsistencies in tests (which you can
see in many hunks of this patch, e.g. ones involving "has_cr").
Most importantly, we added a136f6d8ff (test-lib.sh: support -x option
for shell-tracing, 2014-10-10) at the same time, and it does roughly the
same thing. The output is not quite as succinct as "verbose", and you
have to watch out for stray shell-traces ending up in stderr. But it
solves both of the problems above, and has clearly become the preferred
tool.
Let's consider the "verbose" function a failed experiment and remove the
last few callers (which are all many years old, and have been dwindling
as we remove them from scripts we touch for other reasons). It will be
one less thing for new test writers to see and wonder if they should be
using themselves.

If the user omits the space between "-C" and the commit in a fixup
command then it is parsed as an ordinary fixup and the commit message is
not updated as it should be. Fix this by making the space between "-C"
and "<commit>" optional as it is for the "merge" command.
Note that set_replace_editor() is changed to set $GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR
instead of $EDITOR in order to be able to replace the todo list and
reword commits with $FAKE_COMMIT_MESSAGE. This is safe as all the
existing users are using set_replace_editor() to replace the todo list.

As documented in the bundle URI design doc in 2da14fad8fe (docs:
document bundle URI standard, 2022-08-09), the 'creationToken' member of
a bundle URI allows a bundle provider to specify a total order on the
bundles.
Future changes will allow the Git client to understand these members and
modify its behavior around downloading the bundles in that order. In the
meantime, create tests that add creation tokens to the bundle list. For
now, the Git client correctly ignores these unknown keys.
Create a new test helper function, test_remote_https_urls, which filters
GIT_TRACE2_EVENT output to extract a list of URLs passed to
git-remote-https child processes. This can be used to verify the order
of these requests as we implement the creationToken heuristic. For now,
we need to sort the actual output since the current client does not have
a well-defined order that it applies to the bundles.

Since [1] there has been no reason for keeping "git env--helper" a
built-in. The reason it was a built-in to begin with was to support
the GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON mode removed in that commit. I.e. unlike
the rest of "test-tool" it would potentially be called by the
installed git via "git-sh-i18n.sh".
As none of that applies since [1] we should stop carrying this
technical debt, and move it to t/helper/*. As this mostly move-only
change shows this has the nice bonus that we'll stop wasting time
translating the internal-only strings it emits.
Even though this was a built-in, it was intentionally never
documented, see its introduction in [2]. It never saw use outside of
the test suite, except for the "GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON" use-case
noted above.

We'd probably need to revisit "do we really want to, and have to,
lose CRLF vs LF?" later, at which time we may be able to further
clean this up by replacing "git diff --no-index" with "diff -u".

It can be helpful to check that a file format with a trailing hash has a
specific hash in the final bytes of a written file. This is made more
apparent by recent changes that allow skipping the hash algorithm and
writing a null hash at the end of the file instead.
Add a new test_trailing_hash helper and use it in t1600 to verify that
index.skipHash=true really does skip the hash computation, since
'git fsck' does not actually verify the hash. This confirms that when
the config is disabled explicitly in a super project but enabled in a
submodule, then the use of repo_config_get_bool() loads config from the
correct repository in the case of 'git add'. There are other cases where
istate->repo is NULL and thus this config is loaded instead from
the_repository, but that's due to many different code paths initializing
index_state structs in their own way.
Keep the 'git fsck' call to ensure that any potential future change to
check the index hash does not cause an error in this case.

The previous change allowed for a Git server to advertise the
'bundle-uri' command as a capability based on the
uploadPack.advertiseBundleURIs config option. Create a set of tests that
check that this capability is advertised using 'git ls-remote'.
In order to test this functionality across three protocols (file, git,
and http), create lib-bundle-uri-protocol.sh to generalize the tests,
allowing the other test scripts to set an environment variable and
otherwise inherit the setup and tests from this script.
The tests currently only test that the 'bundle-uri' command is
advertised or not. Other actions will be tested as the Git client learns
to request the 'bundle-uri' command and parse its response.
To help with URI escaping, specifically for file paths with a space in
them, extract a 'sed' invocation from t9199-git-svn-info.sh into a
helper function for use here, too.

Unlike other test helper functions, 'test_oid' doesn't terminate its
output with a LF, but, alas, the reason for this, if any, is not
mentioned in 2c02b110da (t: add test functions to translate
hash-related values, 2018-09-13)).
Now, in the vast majority of cases 'test_oid' is invoked in a command
substitution that is part of a heredoc or supplies an argument to a
command or the value to a variable, and the command substitution would
chop off any trailing LFs, so in these cases the lack or presence of a
trailing LF in its output doesn't matter. However:
- There appear to be only three cases where 'test_oid' is not
invoked in a command substitution:
$ git grep '\stest_oid ' -- ':/t/*.sh'
t0000-basic.sh: test_oid zero >actual &&
t0000-basic.sh: test_oid zero >actual &&
t0000-basic.sh: test_oid zero >actual &&
These are all in test cases checking that 'test_oid' actually
works, and that the size of its output matches the size of the
corresponding hash function with conditions like
test $(wc -c <actual) -eq 40
In these cases the lack of trailing LF does actually matter,
though they could be trivially updated to account for the presence
of a trailing LF.
- There are also a few cases where the lack of trailing LF in
'test_oid's output actually hurts, because tests need to compare
its output with LF terminated file contents, forcing developers to
invoke it as 'echo $(test_oid ...)' to append the missing LF:

When Git's test suite uses `test_cmp`, it is not actually trying to
compare binary files as the name `cmp` would suggest to users familiar
with Unix' tools, but the tests instead verify that actual output
matches the expected text.
On Unix, `cmp` works well enough for Git's purposes because only Line
Feed characters are used as line endings. However, on Windows, while
most tools accept Line Feeds as line endings, many tools produce
Carriage Return + Line Feed line endings, including some of the tools
used by the test suite (which are therefore provided via Git for Windows
SDK). Therefore, `cmp` would frequently fail merely due to different
line endings.
To accommodate for that, the `mingw_test_cmp` function was introduced
into Git's test suite to perform a line-by-line comparison that ignores
line endings. This function is a Bash function that is only used on
Windows, everywhere else `cmp` is used.
This is a double whammy because `cmp` is fast, and `mingw_test_cmp` is
slow, even more so on Windows because it is a Bash script function, and
Bash scripts are known to run particularly slowly on Windows due to
Bash's need for the POSIX emulation layer provided by the MSYS2 runtime.
The commit message of 32ed3314c104 (t5351: avoid using `test_cmp` for
binary data, 2022-07-29) provides an illuminating account of the
consequences: On Windows, the platform on which Git could really use all
the help it can get to improve its performance, the time spent on one
entire test script was reduced from half an hour to less than half a
minute merely by avoiding a single call to `mingw_test_cmp` in but a
single test case.
Learning the lesson to avoid shell scripting wherever possible, the Git
for Windows project implemented a minimal replacement for
`mingw_test_cmp` in the form of a `test-tool` subcommand that parses the
input files line by line, ignoring line endings, and compares them.
Essentially the same thing as `mingw_test_cmp`, but implemented in
C instead of Bash. This solution served the Git for Windows project
well, over years.
However, when this solution was finally upstreamed, the conclusion was
reached that a change to use `git diff --no-index` instead of
`mingw_test_cmp` was more easily reviewed and hence should be used
instead.
The reason why this approach was not even considered in Git for Windows
is that in 2007, there was already a motion on the table to use Git's
own diff machinery to perform comparisons in Git's test suite, but it
was dismissed in https://lore.kernel.org/git/xmqqbkrpo9or.fsf@gitster.g/
as undesirable because tests might potentially succeed due to bugs in
the diff machinery when they should not succeed, and those bugs could
therefore hide regressions that the tests try to prevent.
By the time Git for Windows' `mingw-test-cmp` in C was finally
contributed to the Git mailing list, reviewers agreed that the diff
machinery had matured enough and should be used instead.
When the concern was raised that the diff machinery, due to its
complexity, would perform substantially worse than the test helper
originally implemented in the Git for Windows project, a test
demonstrated that these performance differences are well lost within the
100+ minutes it takes to run Git's test suite on Windows.

`test_path_is_missing` was introduced back in 2caf20c52b ("test-lib:
user-friendly alternatives to test [-d|-f|-e]", 2010-08-10). It took the
path that was supposed to be missing, as well as an optional "diagnosis"
that would be echoed if the path was found to be alive.
Commit 45a2686441 ("test-lib-functions: remove bug-inducing
"diagnostics" helper param", 2021-02-12) dropped this diagnostic
functionality from several `test_path_is_foo` helpers, but note how it
tweaked the README entry on `test_path_is_missing` without actually
adjusting its implementation.
Commit e7884b353b ("test-lib-functions: assert correct parameter count",
2021-02-12) then followed up by asserting that we get just a single
argument.
This history leaves us in a state where we assert that we have exactly
one argument, then go on to anyway check for arguments, echoing them
all. It's clear that we can simplify this code. We should also note that
we run `ls -ld "$1"`, so printing the filename a second time doesn't
really buy us anything. Thus, we can drop the whole `if` block as
redundant.

Some variables in 'test_commit' have names that are common enough that
it is very likely that test authors might use them in a test. If they do
so and use 'test_commit' between setting such a variable and using it,
the variable value from 'test_commit' will leak back into the test and
most likely break it.
Prevent that by marking all variables in 'test_commit' as 'local'. This
allow a subsequent commit to use a 'tag' variable.

Create a new 'test-tool bundle-uri' test helper. This helper will assist
in testing logic deep in the bundle URI feature.
This change introduces the 'parse-key-values' subcommand, which parses
an input file as a list of lines. These are fed into
bundle_uri_parse_line() to test how we construct a 'struct bundle_list'
from that data. The list is then output to stdout as if the key-value
pairs were a Git config file.
We use an input file instead of stdin because of a future change to
parse in config-file format that works better as an input file.

Remove the "test_external" function added in [1]. This arguably makes
the output of t9700-perl-git.sh and friends worse. But as we'll argue
below the trade-off is worth it, since "chaining" to another TAP
emitter in test-lib.sh is more trouble than it's worth.
The new output of t9700-perl-git.sh is now:

Whereas before this change it would be:

At the time of its addition supporting "test_external" was easy, but
when test-lib.sh itself started to emit TAP in [2] we needed to make
everything surrounding the emission of the plan consider
"test_external". I added that support in [2] so that we could run:
prove ./t9700-perl-git.sh :: -v
But since then in [3] the door has been closed on combining
$HARNESS_ACTIVE and -v, we'll now just die:
$ prove ./t9700-perl-git.sh :: -v

So the only use of this has been that *if* we had failure in one of
these tests we could e.g. in CI see which test failed based on the
test number. Now we'll need to look at the full verbose logs to get
that same information.
I think this trade-off is acceptable given the reduction in
complexity, and it brings these tests in line with other similar
tests, e.g. the reftable tests added in [4] will be condensed down to
just one test, which invokes the C helper:

It would still be nice to have that ":: -v" form work again, it
never *really* worked, but even though we've had edge cases test
output screwing up the TAP it mostly worked between d998bd4ab67 and
[3], so we may have been overzealous in forbidding it outright.
I have local patches which I'm planning to submit sooner than later
that get us to that goal, and in a way that isn't buggy. In the
meantime getting rid of this special case makes hacking on this area
of test-lib.sh easier, as we'll do in subsequent commits.
The switch from "perl" to "$PERL_PATH" here is because "perl" is
defined as a shell function in the test suite, see a5bf824f3b4 (t:
prevent '-x' tracing from interfering with test helpers' stderr,
2018-02-25). On e.g. the OSX CI the "command perl"... will be part of
the emitted stderr.

The word "whitelist" has cultural implications that are not inclusive.
Thankfully, it is not difficult to reword and avoid its use.
Focus on changes in the test scripts, since most of the changes are in
comments and test names. The renamed test_allow_var helper is only used
once inside the widely-used test_proto helper.

already use to structure the output of the build step better), we also

Several tests use awk to parse OIDs from the output of 'git ls-files
--stage' and 'git ls-tree'. Introduce helpers to centralize these uses
of awk.
Update t5317-pack-objects-filter-objects.sh to use the new ls-files
helper so that it has some usages to review. Other updates are left for
the future.

The implementation of test_subcommand_inexact() was originally
introduced in e4d0c11c0 (repack: respect kept objects with '--write-midx
-b', 2021-12-20) with the intention to allow finding a subcommand based
on an initial set of arguments. The inexactness was intended as a way to
allow flexible options beyond that initial set, as opposed to
test_subcommand() which requires that the full list of options is
provided in its entirety.
The implementation began by copying test_subcommand() and replaced the
repeated argument 'printf' statement to append ".*" instead of "," to
each argument. This caused it to be more flexible than initially
intended.
The previous change deleted the only use of test_subcommand_inexact, so
instead of editing the helper, delete it.

Continue the work started in 33d7bdd6459 (builtin/reflog.c: use
parse-options api for expire, delete subcommands, 2022-01-06) and
convert the cmd_reflog() function itself to use the parse_options()
API.
Let's also add a test which would fail if we forgot
PARSE_OPT_NO_INTERNAL_HELP here, as well as making sure that we'll
still pass through "--" by supplying PARSE_OPT_KEEP_DASHDASH. For that
test we need to change "test_commit()" to accept files starting with
"--".
The "git reflog -h" usage will now show the usage for all of the
sub-commands, rather than a terse summary which wasn't
correct (e.g. "git reflog exists" is not a valid command). See my
8757b35d443 (commit-graph: define common usage with a macro,
2021-08-23) for prior art.

Extend the "test_hook" function to take options to disable and remove
hooks. Using the wrapper instead of getting the path and running
"chmod -x" or "rm" will make it easier to eventually emulate the same
behavior with config-based hooks.
Not all of these tests need that new mode, but since the rest are
either closely related or use the same "$HOOK" pattern let's convert
them too.

Add a "test_hook" wrapper similar to the existing "test_config"
wrapper added in d960c47a881 (test-lib: add helper functions for
config, 2011-08-17).
This wrapper:
- Will clean up the hook with "test_when_finished", unless --setup is
provided.
- Will error if we clobber a hook, unless --clobber is provided.
- Takes a name like "update" instead of ".git/hooks/update".
- Accepts -C <dir>, like "test_config" and "test_commit".
By using a wrapper we'll be able to easily change all the hook-related
code that assumes that the template-created ".git/hooks" directory is
created by "init", "clone" etc. once another topic follows-up and
changes the test suite to stop creating trash directories using those
templates.
In addition this will make it easy to have the hooks configured using
the "configuration-based hooks" topic, once we get around to
integrating that. I.e. we'll be able to run the tests in a mode where
we sometimes create a .git/hooks/<name>, and other times create a
script in another location, and point the relevant configuration
snippet to it.

Add test_path_is_file_not_symlink(), test_path_is_dir_not_symlink()
and test_path_is_symlink(). Case of use for the first one
in test t/t3903-stash.sh to replace "test -f" because that function
explicitly want the file not to be a symlink.
Give more friendly error message.

Add functions `test_set_magic_mtime` and `test_is_magic_mtime` which can
be used to (re)set the mtime of a file to a predefined ("magic")
timestamp, then perform some operations and finally check for mtime
changes of the file.
The core implementation follows the suggestion from the
mailing list [1].

Historically, we needed a single packfile in order to have reachability
bitmaps. This introduced logic that when 'git repack' had a '-b' option
that we should stop sending the '--honor-pack-keep' option to the 'git
pack-objects' child process, ensuring that we create a packfile
containing all reachable objects.
In the world of multi-pack-index bitmaps, we no longer need to repack
all objects into a single pack to have valid bitmaps. Thus, we should
continue sending the '--honor-pack-keep' flag to 'git pack-objects'.
The fix is very simple: only disable the flag when writing bitmaps but
also _not_ writing the multi-pack-index.
This opens the door to new repacking strategies that might want to keep
some historical set of objects in a stable pack-file while only
repacking more recent objects.
To test, create a new 'test_subcommand_inexact' helper that is more
flexible than 'test_subcommand'. This allows us to look for the
--honor-pack-keep flag without over-indexing on the exact set of
arguments.

In certain environments or for specific test scenarios we might expect a
specific prerequisite check to succeed. Therefore we would like to abort
running our tests if this is not the case.
To remedy this we add the environment variable GIT_TEST_REQUIRE_PREREQ
which can be set to a space separated list of prereqs. If one of these
prereq tests fail then the whole test run will abort.

The 'debug' function in test-lib-functions.sh is used to invoke a
debugger at a specific line in a test. It inherits the value of HOME and
TERM set by 'test-lib.sh': HOME="$TRASH_DIRECTORY" and TERM=dumb.
Changing the value of HOME means that any customization configured in a
developers' debugger configuration file (like $HOME/.gdbinit or
$HOME/.lldbinit) are not available in the debugger invoked by
'test_pause'.
Changing the value of TERM to 'dumb' means that colored output
is disabled in the debugger.
To make the debugging experience with 'debug' more pleasant, leverage
the variable USER_HOME, added in the previous commit, to copy a
developer's ~/.gdbinit and ~/.lldbinit to the test HOME. We do not set
HOME to USER_HOME as in 'test_pause' to avoid user configuration in
$USER_HOME/.gitconfig from interfering with the command being debugged.
Also, add a flag to launch the debugger with the original value of
TERM, and add the same warning as for 'test_pause'.

The 'test_pause' function, which is designed to help interactive
debugging and exploration of tests, currently inherits the value of HOME
and TERM set by 'test-lib.sh': HOME="$TRASH_DIRECTORY" and TERM=dumb. It
also invokes the shell defined by TEST_SHELL_PATH, which defaults to
/bin/sh (through SHELL_PATH).
Changing the value of HOME means that any customization configured in a
developers' shell startup files and any Git aliases defined in their
global Git configuration file are not available in the shell invoked by
'test_pause'.
Changing the value of TERM to 'dumb' means that colored output
is disabled for all commands in that shell.
Using /bin/sh as the shell invoked by 'test_pause' is not ideal since
some platforms (i.e. Debian and derivatives) use Dash as /bin/sh, and
this shell is usually compiled without readline support, which makes for
a poor interactive command line experience.
To make the interactive command line experience in the shell invoked by
'test_pause' more pleasant, save the values of HOME and TERM in
USER_HOME and USER_TERM before changing them in test-lib.sh, and add
options to 'test_pause' to optionally use these variables to invoke the
shell. Also add an option to invoke SHELL instead of TEST_SHELL_PATH, so
that developer's interactive shell is used.
We use options instead of changing the behaviour unconditionally since
these three variables can slightly change command behaviour. Moreover,
using the original HOME means commands could overwrite files in a user's
home directory. Be explicit about these caveats in the new 'Usage'
section in test-lib-functions.sh.
Finally, add '[options]' to the test_pause synopsys in t/README, and
mention that the full list of helper functions and their options can be
found in test-lib-functions.sh.

3f824e91c8 (t/Makefile: introduce TEST_SHELL_PATH, 2017-12-08)
made it easy to use a different shell for the tests than 'SHELL_PATH'
used at compile time. But 'test_pause' still invokes 'SHELL_PATH'.
If TEST_SHELL_PATH is set, invoke that shell in 'test_pause' for
consistency.

The shell+perl "[de]packetize()" helper functions were added in
4414a150025 (t/lib-git-daemon: add network-protocol helpers,
2018-01-24), and around the same time we added the "pkt-line" helper
in 74e70029615 (test-pkt-line: introduce a packet-line test helper,
2018-03-14).
For some reason it seems we've mostly used the shell+perl version
instead of the helper since then. There were discussions around
88124ab2636 (test-lib-functions: make packetize() more efficient,
2020-03-27) and cacae4329fa (test-lib-functions: simplify packetize()
stdin code, 2020-03-29) to improve them and make them more efficient.
There was one good reason to do so, we needed an equivalent of
"test-tool pkt-line pack", but that command wasn't capable of handling
input with "\n" (a feature) or "\0" (just because it happens to be
printf-based under the hood).
Let's add a "pkt-line-raw" helper for that, and expose is at a
packetize_raw() to go with the existing packetize() on the shell
level, this gives us the smallest amount of change to the tests
themselves.

In some tests, we're checking the number of lines in output of some
commands, including but not limited to Git's command.
We're doing the check by running those commands in the left side of
a pipe, thus losing the exit status code of those commands. Meanwhile,
we really want to check the exit status code of Git's command.
Let's write the output of those commands to a temporary file, and use
test_line_count separately in order to check exit status code of
those commands properly.

Not all systems have a readlink program available for use by the shell.
This causes t3210 to fail on at least AIX. Let's provide a perl
one-liner to do the same thing, and use it there.
I also updated calls in t9802. Nobody reported failure there, but it's
the same issue. Presumably nobody actually tests with p4 on AIX in the
first place (if it is even available there).
I left the use of readlink in the "--valgrind" setup in test-lib.sh, as
valgrind isn't available on exotic platforms anyway (and I didn't want
to increase dependencies between test-lib.sh and test-lib-functions.sh).
There's one other curious case. Commit d2addc3b96 (t7800: readlink may
not be available, 2016-05-31) fixed a similar case. We can't use our
wrapper function there, though, as it's inside a sub-script triggered by
Git. It uses a slightly different technique ("ls" piped to "sed"). I
chose not to use that here as it gives confusing "ls -l" output if the
file is unexpectedly not a symlink (which is OK for its limited use, but
potentially confusing for general use within the test suite). The perl
version emits the empty string.

Remove various redundant or obsolete code from the test_create_repo()
function, and split up its use in test-lib.sh from what tests need
from it.
This leave us with a pass-through wrapper for "git init" in
test-lib-functions.sh, in test-lib.sh we have the same, except for
needing to redirect stdout/stderr, and emitting an error ourselves if
it fails. We don't need to error() ourselves when test_create_repo()
is invoked, as the invocation will be a part of a test's "&&"-chain.
Everything below this paragraph is a detailed summary of the history
of test_create_repo() explaining why it's safe to remove the various
things it was doing:
1. "mkdir -p" isn't needed because "git init" itself will create
leading directories if needed.
2. Since we're now a simple wrapper for "git init" we don't need to
check that we have only one argument. If someone wants to run
"test_create_repo --bare x" that's OK.
3. We won't ever hit that "Cannot setup test environment"
error.
Checking the test environment sanity when doing "git init" dates
back to eea420693be (t0000: catch trivial pilot errors.,
2005-12-10) and 2ccd2027b01 (trivial: check, if t/trash directory
was successfully created, 2006-01-05).
We can also see it in another form a bit later in my own
0d314ce834d (test-lib: use subshell instead of cd $new && .. && cd
$old, 2010-08-30).
But since 2006f0adaee (t/test-lib: make sure Git has already been
built, 2012-09-17) we already check if we have a built git
earlier.
The one thing this was testing after that 2012 change was that
we'd just built "git", but not "git-init", but since
3af4c7156c4 (tests: respect GIT_TEST_INSTALLED when initializing
repositories, 2018-11-12) we invoke "git", not "git-init".
So all of that's been checked already, and we don't need to
re-check it here.
4. We don't need to move .git/hooks out of the way.
That dates back to c09a69a83e3 (Disable hooks during tests.,
2005-10-16), since then hooks became disabled by default in
f98f8cbac01 (Ship sample hooks with .sample suffix, 2008-06-24).
So the hooks were already disabled by default, but as can be seen
from "mkdir .git/hooks" changes various tests needed to re-setup
that directory. Now they no longer do.
This makes us implicitly depend on the default hooks being
disabled, which is a good thing. If and when we'd have any
on-by-default hooks (I see no reason we ever would) we'd want to
see the subtle and not so subtle ways that would break the test
suite.
5. We don't need to "cd" to the "$repo" directory at all anymore.
In the code being removed here we both "cd"'d to the repository
before calling "init", and did so in a subshell.
It's not important to do either, so both of those can be
removed. We cd'd because this code grew from test-lib.sh code
where we'd have done so already, see eedf8f97e58 (Abstract
test_create_repo out for use in tests., 2006-02-17), and later
"cd"'d inside a subshell since 0d314ce834d to avoid having to keep
track of an "old pwd" variable to cd back after the setup.
Being in the repository directory made moving the hooks around
easier (we wouldn't have to fully qualify the path). Since we're
not moving the hooks per #4 above we don't need to "cd" for that
reason either.
6. We can drop the --template argument and instead rely on the
GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR set to the same path earlier in test-lib.sh. See
8683a45d669 (Introduce GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR, 2006-12-19)
7. We only needed that ">&3 2>&4" redirection when invoked from
test-lib.sh.
We could still invoke test_create_repo() there, but as the

PATH is already set up in test-lib.sh to start with

test_create_repo() (now "git init") is called.. So we can simply
run "git" and rely on the PATH lookup choosing the right
executable.

Arrange for the advice about naming the initial branch not to be shown
in the --verbose output of the test suite.
Since 675704c74dd (init: provide useful advice about
init.defaultBranch, 2020-12-11) some tests have been very chatty with
repeated occurrences of this multi-line advice. Having it be this
verbose isn't helpful for anyone in the context of git's own test
suite, and it makes debugging tests that use their own "git init"
invocations needlessly distracting.
By setting the GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME variable early in
test-lib.sh itself we'll squash the warning not only for
test_create_repo(), as 675704c74dd explicitly intended, but also for
other "git init" invocations.
And once we'd like to have this configuration set for all "git init"
invocations in the test suite we can get rid of the init.defaultBranch
configuration setting in test_create_repo(), as
repo_default_branch_name() in refs.c will take the GIT_TEST_* variable
over it being set.

Add a --printf option to test_commit to allow writing to the file with
"printf" instead of "echo".
This is useful for writing "\n", "\0" etc., in particular in
combination with the --append option added in 3373518cc8 (test-lib
functions: add an --append option to test_commit, 2021-01-12).
I'm converting a few tests to use the new option rather than a manual
printf/add/commit combination to demonstrate its usefulness. While I'm
at it use "test_create_repo" where appropriate, and give the
first/second commit a meaningful/more conventional log message in
cases where no test cared about that message.

Add an --annotated option to test_commit to create annotated tags. The
tag will share the same message as the commit, and we'll call
test_tick before creating it (unless --notick) is provided.
There's quite a few tests that could be simplified with this
construct. I've picked one to convert in this change as a
demonstration.

Finish the removal I started in 1108cea7f8e (tests: remove most uses
of test_i18ncmp, 2021-02-11). At that time the function wasn't removed
due to disruption with in-flight changes, remove the occurrences that
have landed since then.
As of writing this there are no test_i18ncmp uses between "master" and
"seen", so let's also remove the function to finally put it to rest.

Add assertions of the correct parameter count of various functions, in
particularly the wrappers for the shell "test" built-in.
In an earlier commit we fixed a bug with an incorrect number of

Remove the optional "diagnostics" parameter of the
test_path_is_{file,dir,missing} functions.
We have a lot of uses of these functions, but the only legitimate use
of the diagnostics parameter is from when the functions themselves
were introduced in 2caf20c52b7 (test-lib: user-friendly alternatives
to test [-d|-f|-e], 2010-08-10).
But as the the rest of this diff demonstrates its presence did more to
silently introduce bugs in our tests. Fix such bugs in the tests added
in ae4e89e549b (gc: add --keep-largest-pack option, 2018-04-15), and
c04ba51739a (t6046: testcases checking whether updates can be skipped
in a merge, 2018-04-19).
Let's also assert that those functions are called with exactly one
parameter, a follow-up commit will add similar asserts to other
functions in test-lib-functions.sh that we didn't have existing misuse
of.

Change two uses of "error" in test-lib-functions.sh to "BUG".
In the first instance in "test_cmp_rev" the author of the "BUG"
function added in [1] had another in-flight patch adding this in [2],
and the two were never consolidated.
In the second case in "test_atexit" added in [3] that we could have
instead used "BUG" appears to have been missed.

One of the conveniences that test_commit offers is making a tag for each
commit. This makes it easy to refer to the commits in subsequent
commands. But it can also be a pain if you care about reachability,
because those tags keep the commits reachable even if they are rewound
from the branch they're made on.
The alternative is that scripts have to call test_tick, git-add, and
git-commit themselves. Let's add a --no-tag option to give them the
one-liner convenience of using test_commit.
This is in preparation for the next patch, which will add some more
calls. But I cleaned up an existing site to show off the feature. There
are probably more cleanups possible.

Subject: [PATCH 8/9] test-lib: test_region looks for trace2 regions
Most test cases can verify Git's behavior using input/output
expectations or changes to the .git directory. However, sometimes we
want to check that Git did or did not run a certain section of code.
This is particularly important for performance-only features that we
want to ensure have been enabled in certain cases.
Add a new 'test_region' function that checks if a trace2 region was
entered and left in a given trace2 event log.
There is one existing test (t0500-progress-display.sh) that performs
this check already, so use the helper function instead. Note that this
changes the expectations slightly. The old test (incorrectly) used two
patterns for the 'grep' invocation, but this performs an OR of the
patterns, not an AND. This means that as long as one region_enter event
was logged, the test would succeed, even if it was not due to the
progress category.
More uses will be added in a later change.
t6423-merge-rename-directories.sh also greps for region_enter lines, but
it verifies the number of such lines, which is not the same as an
existence check.

This removes the ability to inject "poison" gettext() messages via the
GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON special test setup.
I initially added this as a compile-time option in bb946bba761 (i18n:
add GETTEXT_POISON to simulate unfriendly translator, 2011-02-22), and
most recently modified to be toggleable at runtime in
6cdccfce1e0 (i18n: make GETTEXT_POISON a runtime option, 2018-11-08)..
The reason for its removal is that the trade-off of maintaining it
v.s. what it's getting us has long since flipped. When gettext was
integrated in 5e9637c6297 (i18n: add infrastructure for translating
Git with gettext, 2011-11-18) there was understandable concern on the
Git ML that in marking messages for translation en-masse we'd
inadvertently mark plumbing messages. The GETTEXT_POISON facility was
a way to smoke those out via our test suite.
Nowadays however we're done (or almost entirely done) with any marking
of messages for translation. New messages are usually marked by their
authors, who'll know whether it makes sense to translate them or
not. If not any errors in marking the messages are much more likely to
be spotted in review than in the the initial deluge of i18n patches in
the 2011-2012 era.
So let's just remove this. This leaves the test suite in a state where
we still have a lot of test_i18n, C_LOCALE_OUTPUT
etc. uses. Subsequent commits will remove those too.
The change to t/lib-rebase.sh is a selective revert of the relevant
part of f2d17068fd (i18n: rebase-interactive: mark comments of squash
for translation, 2016-06-17), and the comment in
t/t3406-rebase-message.sh is from c7108bf9ed (i18n: rebase: mark
messages for translation, 2012-07-25).

As discovered by Ævar, we cannot increment graph version to
distinguish between generation numbers v1 and v2 [1]. Thus, one of
pre-requistes before implementing generation number v2 was to
distinguish between graph versions in a backwards compatible manner.
We are going to introduce a new chunk called Generation DATa chunk (or
GDAT). GDAT will store corrected committer date offsets whereas CDAT
will still store topological level.
Old Git does not understand GDAT chunk and would ignore it, reading
topological levels from CDAT. New Git can parse GDAT and take advantage
of newer generation numbers, falling back to topological levels when
GDAT chunk is missing (as it would happen with a commit-graph written
by old Git).
We introduce a test environment variable 'GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH_NO_GDAT'
which forces commit-graph file to be written without generation data
chunk to emulate a commit-graph file written by old Git.
To minimize the space required to store corrrected commit date, Git
stores corrected commit date offsets into the commit-graph file, instea
of corrected commit dates. This saves us 4 bytes per commit, decreasing
the GDAT chunk size by half, but it's possible for the offset to
overflow the 4-bytes allocated for storage. As such overflows are and
should be exceedingly rare, we use the following overflow management
scheme:
We introduce a new commit-graph chunk, Generation Data OVerflow ('GDOV')
to store corrected commit dates for commits with offsets greater than
GENERATION_NUMBER_V2_OFFSET_MAX.
If the offset is greater than GENERATION_NUMBER_V2_OFFSET_MAX, we set
the MSB of the offset and the other bits store the position of corrected
commit date in GDOV chunk, similar to how Extra Edge List is maintained.
We test the overflow-related code with the following repo history:
F - N - U

U - N - U N
\ /
N - F - N
Where the commits denoted by U have committer date of zero seconds
since Unix epoch, the commits denoted by N have committer date of
1112354055 (default committer date for the test suite) seconds since
Unix epoch and the commits denoted by F have committer date of
(2 ^ 31 - 2) seconds since Unix epoch.
The largest offset observed is 2 ^ 31, just large enough to overflow.

The usage comment for test_commit() shows that the --author option
should be given as `--author=<author>`. However, this is incorrect as it
only works when given as `--author <author>`. Correct this erroneous
text.
Also, for the sake of correctness, fix the description as well since we
invoke `git commit` with `--author <author>`, not `--author=<author>`.

in [2], but neither of these commits added any documentation for these
options. When -C was added in [3] a comment was added to document it,

The last test of t4129 creates a directory and expects its setgid bit
(g+s) to be off. But this makes the test fail when the parent directory
has the bit set, as setgid's state is inherited by newly created
subdirectories.
One way to solve this problem is to allow the presence of this bit when
comparing the return of `test_modebits` with the expected value. But
then we may have the same problem in the future when other tests start
using `test_modebits` on directories (currently t4129 is the only one)
and forget about setgid. Instead, let's make the helper function more
robust with respect to the state of the setgid bit in the test directory
by removing this bit from the returning value. There should be no
problem with existing callers as no one currently expects this bit to be
on.
Note that the sticky bit (+t) and the setuid bit (u+s) are not
inherited, so we don't have to worry about those.

To give ample warning for users wishing to override Git's the fall-back
for an unconfigured `init.defaultBranch` (in case we decide to change it
in a future Git version), let's introduce some advice that is shown upon
`git init` when that value is not set.
Note: two test cases in Git's test suite want to verify that the
`stderr` output of `git init` is empty. It is now necessary to suppress
the advice, we now do that via the `init.defaultBranch` setting. While
not strictly necessary, we also set this to `false` in
`test_create_repo()`.

"git apply" adjusted the permission bits of working-tree files and
directories according core.sharedRepository setting by mistake and
for a long time, which has been corrected.

core.sharedRepository defines which permissions Git should set when
creating files in $GIT_DIR, so that the repository may be shared with
other users. But (in its current form) the setting shouldn't affect how
files are created in the working tree. This is not respected by apply
and am (which uses apply), when creating leading directories:

Only the leading directories are affected. That's because they are
created with safe_create_leading_directories(), which calls
adjust_shared_perm() to set the directories' permissions based on
core.sharedRepository. To fix that, let's introduce a variant of this
function that ignores the setting, and use it in apply. Also add a
regression test and a note in the function documentation about the use
of each variant according to the destination (working tree or git
dir).

Some test prereqs depend on other prereqs, so in a couple of cases we
have nested prereqs that look something like this:
test_lazy_prereq FOO '
test_have_prereq BAR &&
check-foo
'
This can be problematic, because lazy prereqs are evaluated in the
'$TRASH_DIRECTORY/prereq-test-dir' directory, which is the same for
every prereq, and which is automatically removed after the prereq has
been evaluated. So if the inner prereq (BAR above) is a lazy prereq
that hasn't been evaluated yet, then after its evaluation the
'prereq-test-dir' shared with the outer prereq will be removed.
Consequently, 'check-foo' will find itself in a non-existing
directory, and won't be able to create/access any files in its cwd,
which could result in an unfulfilled outer prereq.
Luckily, this doesn't affect any of our current nested prereqs, either
because the inner prereq is not a lazy prereq (e.g. MINGW, CYGWIN or
PERL), or because the outer prereq happens to be checked without
touching any paths in its cwd (GPGSM and RFC1991 in 'lib-gpg.sh').
So to prevent nested prereqs from interfering with each other let's
evaluate each prereq in its own dedicated directory by appending the
prereq's name to the directory name, e.g. 'prereq-test-dir-SYMLINKS'.
In the test we check not only that the prereq test dir is still there,
but also that the inner prereq can't mess with the outer prereq's
files.

A test helper "test_cmp A B" was taught to diagnose missing files A
or B as a bug in test, but some tests legitimately wanted to notice
a failure to even create file B as an error, in addition to leaving
the expected result in it, and were misdiagnosed as a bug. This
has been corrected.

This reverts commit d572f52a64c6a69990f72ad6a09504b9b615d2e4; the
idea to detect that "test_cmp expect actual" was fed a misspelt
filename meant well, but when the version of Git tested exhibits a
bug, the reason why these two files do not match may be because one
of them did not get created as expected, in which case missing file
is not a sign of misspelt filename but is a genuine test failure.

The 'gc' builtin is our current entrypoint for automatically maintaining
a repository. This one tool does many operations, such as repacking the
repository, packing refs, and rewriting the commit-graph file. The name
implies it performs "garbage collection" which means several different
things, and some users may not want to use this operation that rewrites
the entire object database.
Create a new 'maintenance' builtin that will become a more general-
purpose command. To start, it will only support the 'run' subcommand,
but will later expand to add subcommands for scheduling maintenance in
the background.
For now, the 'maintenance' builtin is a thin shim over the 'gc' builtin.
In fact, the only option is the '--auto' toggle, which is handed
directly to the 'gc' builtin. The current change is isolated to this
simple operation to prevent more interesting logic from being lost in
all of the boilerplate of adding a new builtin.
Use existing builtin/gc.c file because we want to share code between the
two builtins. It is possible that we will have 'maintenance' replace the
'gc' builtin entirely at some point, leaving 'git gc' as an alias for
some specific arguments to 'git maintenance run'.
Create a new test_subcommand helper that allows us to test if a certain
subcommand was run. It requires storing the GIT_TRACE2_EVENT logs in a
file. A negation mode is available that will be used in later tests.

The code in vcs-svn was started in 2010 as an attempt to build a
remote-helper for interacting with svn repositories (as opposed to
git-svn). However, we never got as far as shipping a mature remote
helper, and the last substantive commit was e99d012a6bc in 2012.
We do have a git-remote-testsvn, and it is even installed as part of
"make install". But given the name, it seems unlikely to be used by
anybody (you'd have to explicitly "git clone testsvn::$url", and there
have been zero mentions of that on the mailing list since 2013, and even
that includes the phrase "you might need to hack a bit to get it working
properly"[1]).
We also ship contrib/svn-fe, which builds on the vcs-svn work. However,
it does not seem to build out of the box for me, as the link step misses
some required libraries for using libgit.a. Curiously, the original
build breakage bisects for me to eff80a9fd9 (Allow custom "comment
char", 2013-01-16), which seems unrelated. There was an attempt to fix
it in da011cb0e7 (contrib/svn-fe: fix Makefile, 2014-08-28), but on my
system that only switches the error message.
So it seems like the result is not really usable by anybody in practice.
It would be wonderful if somebody wanted to pick up the topic again, and
potentially it's worth carrying around for that reason. But the flip
side is that people doing tree-wide operations have to deal with this
code. And you can see the list with (replace "HEAD" with this commit as
appropriate):

which shows 58 times somebody had to deal with the code, generally due

from 21MB to 19MB.

Under normal circumstances, if a test author misspells a filename passed
to test_cmp(), the error is quickly discovered when the test fails
unexpectedly due to test_cmp() being unable to find the file. However,
if the test is expected to fail, as with test_expect_failure(), a
misspelled filename as argument to test_cmp() will go unnoticed since
the test will indeed fail, but for the wrong reason. Make it easier for
test authors to discover such problems early by sanity-checking the
arguments to test_cmp(). To avoid penalizing all clients of test_cmp()
in the general case, only check for missing files if the comparison
fails.
While at it, make test_cmp_bin() sanity-check its arguments, as well.

To allow developers to run the testsuite with a different algorithm than
the default, provide an environment variable, GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_HASH, to
specify the algorithm to use. Compute the fixed constants using
test_oid. Move the constant initialization down below the point where
test-lib-functions.sh is loaded so the functions are defined.

In some tests, we have data files which are written with a particular
hash algorithm. Instead of keeping two copies of the test files, we can
keep one, and translate the value on the fly.
In order to do so, we'll need to read both the source algorithm and the
current algorithm, so add an optional flag to the test_oid helper that
lets us look up a value for a specified hash algorithm. This should
not cause any conflicts with existing tests, since key arguments to
test_oid are allowed to contains only shell identifier characters.

In previous commits, we removed the usage of test_must_fail() for most
commands except for a set of pre-approved commands. Since that's done,
only allow test_must_fail() to run those pre-approved commands.
Obviously, we should allow `git`.
We allow `__git*` as some completion functions return an error code that
comes from a git invocation. It's good to avoid using test_must_fail
unnecessarily but it wouldn't hurt to err on the side of caution when
we're potentially wrapping a git command (like in these cases).
We also allow `test-tool` and `test-svn-fe` because these are helper
commands that are written by us and we want to catch their failure.
Finally, we allow `test_terminal` because `test_terminal` just wraps
around git commands. Also, we cannot rewrite
`test_must_fail test_terminal` as `test_terminal test_must_fail` because
test_must_fail() is a shell function and as a result, it cannot be
invoked from the test-terminal Perl script.
We opted to explicitly list the above tools instead of using a catch-all
such as `test[-_]*` because we want to be as restrictive as possible so
that in the future, someone would not accidentally introduce an
unrelated usage of test_must_fail() on an "unapproved" command.

A Windows-specific test element has been made more robust against
misuse from both user's environment and programmer's errors.

This function uses Windows' system tool `attrib` to determine the state
of the hidden flag of a file or directory.
We should not actually expect the first `attrib.exe` in the PATH to
be the one we are looking for. Or that it is in the PATH, for that
matter.
Let's use the full path to the tool instead.

The `is_hidden` function can be used (only on Windows) to determine
whether a directory or file have their `hidden` flag set.
This function is duplicated between two test scripts. It is better to
move it into `test-lib-functions.sh` so that it is reused.
This patch is best viewed with `--color-moved`.

The code path in packetize() for reading stdin needs to handle NUL
bytes, so we can't rely on shell variables. However, the current code
takes a whopping 4 processes and uses a temporary file. We can do this
much more simply and efficiently by using a single perl invocation (and
we already rely on perl in the matching depacketize() function).
We'll keep the non-stdin code path as it is, since that uses zero extra
processes.

The packetize() function takes its input on stdin, and requires 4
separate sub-processes to format a simple string. We can do much better
by getting the length via the shell's "${#packet}" construct. The one
caveat is that the shell can't put a NUL into a variable, so we'll have
to continue to provide the stdin form for a few calls.
There are a few other cleanups here in the touched code:
- the stdin form of packetize() had an extra stray "%s" when printing
the packet
- the converted calls in t5562 can be made simpler by redirecting
output as a block, rather than repeated appending

We check the results of "rev-list --use-bitmap-index" by comparing it to
the same traversal without the bitmap option. However, this is a little
tricky to do because of some output differences (see the included
comment for details). Let's pull this out into a helper function, since
we'll be adding some similar tests.
While we're at it, let's also try to confirm that the bitmap output did
indeed use bitmaps. Since the code internally falls back to the
non-bitmap path in some cases, the tests are at risk of becoming trivial
noops.
This is a bit fragile, as not all outputs will differ (e.g., looking at
only the commits from a fully-bitmapped pack will end up exactly the
same as the normal traversal order, since it also matches the pack
order). So we'll provide an escape hatch by which tests can disable this
check (which should only be used after manually confirming that bitmaps
kicked in).

When 'test_commit_bulk' is invoked in an empty test repository, it
prints a "fatal: Needed a single revision" error, but still does what
it's supposed to do. A test helper function displaying a fatal error
and still succeeding is always suspect to be buggy, but luckily that's
not the case here: that error comes from a 'git rev-parse --verify
HEAD' command invoked in a condition, which doesn't have anything to
verify in an empty repository.
Use the '--quiet' option to suppress that error message.

Since 3b072c577b (tests: replace test_tristate with "git env--helper",
2019-06-21) we get the normalized bool values of various GIT_TEST_*
environment variables via 'git env--helper'. Now, while the 'git
env--helper' command itself does catch invalid values in the
environment variable or in the given --default and exits with error
(exit code 128 or 129, respectively), it's invoked in conditions like
'if ! git env--helper ...', which means that all invalid bool values
are interpreted the same as the ordinary 'false' (exit code 1). This
has led to inadvertently skipped httpd tests in our CI builds for a
couple of weeks, see 3960290675 (ci: restore running httpd tests,
2019-09-06).
Let's be more careful about what the test suite accepts as bool values
in GIT_TEST_* environment variables, and error out loud and clear on
invalid values instead of simply skipping tests. Add the
'test_bool_env' helper function to encapsulate the invocation of 'git
env--helper' and the verification of its exit code, and replace all
invocations of that command in our test framework and test suite with
a call to this new helper (except in 't0017-env-helper.sh', of
course).

In the case where we are using test_cmp_rev() to report not-equals, we
write `! test_cmp_rev`. However, since test_cmp_rev() contains
r1=$(git rev-parse --verify "$1") &&
r2=$(git rev-parse --verify "$2") &&
`! test_cmp_rev` will succeed if any of the rev-parses fail. This
behavior is not desired. We want the rev-parses to _always_ be
successful.
Rewrite test_cmp_rev() to optionally accept "!" as the first argument to
do a not-equals comparison. Rewrite `! test_cmp_rev` to `test_cmp_rev !`
in all tests to take advantage of this new functionality.
Also, rewrite the rev-parse logic to end with a `|| return 1` instead of
&&-chaining into the rev-comparison logic. This makes it obvious to
future readers that we explicitly intend on returning early if either of
the rev-parses fail.

t1410.3 ("corrupt and checks") fails when run using dash versions
before 0.5.8, with a cryptic message:
mv: cannot stat '.git/objects//e84adb2704cbd49549e52169b4043871e13432': No such file or directory
The function generating that path:

which is supposed to produce a result like

But a dash bug[*] causes it to instead expand to
/3456789...
The stream of symbols that makes up this function is hard for humans
to follow, too. The complexity mostly comes from the repeated use of
the expression ${1#??} for the basename of the loose object. Use a
variable instead --- nowadays, the dialect of shell used by Git
permits local variables, so this is cheap.
An alternative way to work around [*] is to remove the double-quotes
around test_oid_to_path's return value. That makes the expression
easier for dash to read, but harder for humans. Let's prefer the
rephrasing that's helpful for humans, too.
Noticed by building on Ubuntu trusty, which uses dash 0.5.7.

Note that the test's name is only shown at the very end.
With '-x' tracing enabled and/or in longer tests the verbose output
might be several screenfulls long, making it harder than necessary to
find where the output of the test with a given name starts (especially
when the outputs to different file descriptors are racing, and the
"expecting success"/command block arrives earlier than the "ok" line
of the previous test).
Print the test name at the start of the test's verbose output, i.e. at
the end of the "expecting success" and "checking known breakage"
lines, to make the start of a particular test a bit easier to
recognize. Also print the test script and test case numbers, to help
those poor souls who regularly have to scan through the combined
verbose output of several test scripts.
So the dummy test above would start like this:

Some tests need to create a string of commits. Doing this with
test_commit is very heavy-weight, as it needs at least one process per
commit (and in fact, uses several).
For bulk creation, we can do much better by using fast-import, but it's
often a pain to generate the input. Let's provide a helper to do so.
We'll use t5310 as a guinea pig, as it has three 10-commit loops. Here
are hyperfine results before and after:

There are several places in our testsuite where we want to insert a
slash after an object ID to make it into a path we can reference under
.git/objects, and we have various ways of doing so. Add a helper to
provide a standard way of doing this that works for all size hashes.

On a case-insensitive filesystem, such as HFS+ or NTFS, it is possible
that the idea Bash has of the current directory differs in case from
what Git thinks it is. That's totally okay, though, and we should not
expect otherwise.
On Windows, for example, when you call
cd C:\GIT-SDK-64
in a PowerShell and there exists a directory called `C:\git-sdk-64`, the
current directory will be reported in all upper-case. Even in a Bash
that you might call from that PowerShell. Git, however, will have
normalized this via `GetFinalPathByHandle()`, and the expectation in
t0001 that the recorded gitdir will match what `pwd` says will be
violated.
Let's address this by comparing these paths in a case-insensitive
manner when `core.ignoreCase` is `true`.

Change the GIT_TEST_FAIL_PREREQS variable from being "non-empty?" to
being a more standard boolean variable. I recently added the variable
in dfe1a17df9 ("tests: add a special setup where prerequisites fail",
2019-05-13), having to add another "non-empty?" special-case is what
prompted me to write the "git env--helper" utility being used here.
Converting this one is a bit tricky since we use it so early and
frequently in the guts of the test code itself, so let's set a
GIT_TEST_FAIL_PREREQS_INTERNAL which can be tested with the old "test
-n" for the purposes of the shell code, and change the user-exposed
and documented GIT_TEST_FAIL_PREREQS variable to a boolean.

The test_tristate helper introduced in 83d842dc8c ("tests: turn on
network daemon tests by default", 2014-02-10) can now be better
implemented with "git env--helper" to give the variables in question
the standard boolean behavior.
The reason for the "tristate" was to have all of false/true/auto,
where "auto" meant either "false" or "true" depending on what the
fallback was. With the --default option to "git env--helper" we can
simply have e.g. GIT_TEST_HTTPD where we know if it's true because the
user asked explicitly ("true"), or true implicitly ("auto").
This breaks backwards compatibility for explicitly setting "auto" for
these variables, but I don't think anyone cares. That was always
intended to be internal.
This means the test_normalize_bool() code in test-lib-functions.sh
goes away in addition to test_tristate(). We still need the
test_skip_or_die() helper, but now it takes the variable name instead
of the value, and uses "git env--bool" to distinguish a default "true"
from an explicit "true" (in those "explicit true" cases we want to
fail the test in question).

As discussed in [1] there's a regression in the "pu" branch now
because a new test implicitly assumed that a previous test guarded by
a prerequisite had been run. Add a "GIT_TEST_FAIL_PREREQS" special
test setup where we'll skip (nearly) all tests guarded by
prerequisites, allowing us to easily emulate those platform where we
don't run these tests.
As noted in the documentation I'm adding I'm whitelisting the SYMLINKS
prerequisite for now. A lot of tests started failing if we lied about
not supporting symlinks. It's also unlikely that we'll have a failing
test due to a hard dependency on symlinks without that being the
obvious cause, so for now it's not worth the effort to make it work.

The helper 'hex2oct' is used to convert base-16 encoded data into a
base-8 binary form, and is useful for preparing data for commands that
accept input in a binary format, such as 'git hash-object', via
'printf'.
This helper is defined identically in three separate places throughout
't'. Move the definition to test-lib-function.sh, so that it can be used
in new test suites, and its definition is not redundant.
This will likewise make our job easier in the subsequent commit, which
also uses 'hex2oct'.

When running Apache, 'git daemon', or p4d, we want to kill them at the
end of the test script, otherwise a leftover daemon process will keep
its port open indefinitely, and thus will interfere with subsequent
executions of the same test script.
So far, we stop these daemon processes "manually", i.e.:
- by registering functions or commands in the trap on EXIT to stop
the daemon while preserving the last seen exit code before the
trap (to deal with a failure when run with '--immediate' or with
interrupts by ctrl-C),
- and by invoking these functions/commands last thing before
'test_done' (and sometimes restoring the test framework's default
trap on EXIT, to prevent the daemons from being killed twice).
On one hand, we do this inconsistently, e.g. 'git p4' tests invoke
different functions in the trap on EXIT and in the last test before
'test_done', and they neither restore the test framework's default trap
on EXIT nor preserve the last seen exit code. On the other hand, this
is error prone, because, as shown in a previous patch in this series,
any output from the cleanup commands in the trap on EXIT can prevent a
proper cleanup when a test script run with '--verbose-log' and certain
shells, notably 'dash', is interrupted.
Let's introduce 'test_atexit', which is loosely modeled after
'test_when_finished', but has a broader scope: rather than running the
commands after the current test case, run them when the test script
finishes, and also run them when the test is interrupted, or exits
early in case of a failure while the '--immediate' option is in
effect.
When running the cleanup commands at the end of a successful test,
then they will be run in 'test_done' before it removes the trash
directory, i.e. the cleanup commands will still be able to access any
pidfiles or socket files in there. When running the cleanup commands
after an interrupt or failure with '--immediate', then they will be
run in the trap on EXIT. In both cases they will be run in
'test_eval_', i.e. both standard error and output of all cleanup
commands will go where they should according to the '-v' or
'--verbose-log' options, and thus won't cause any troubles when
interrupting a test script run with '--verbose-log'.

In cc95bc2025 (t5562: replace /dev/zero with a pipe from
generate_zero_bytes, 2019-02-09), we replaced usage of /dev/zero (which
is not available on NonStop, apparently) by a Perl script snippet to
generate NUL bytes.
Sadly, it does not seem to work on NonStop, as t5562 reportedly hangs.
Worse, this also hangs in the Ubuntu 16.04 agents of the CI builds on
Azure Pipelines: for some reason, the Perl script snippet that is run
via `generate_zero_bytes` in t5562's 'CONTENT_LENGTH overflow ssite_t'
test case tries to write out an infinite amount of NUL bytes unless a
broken pipe is encountered, that snippet never encounters the broken
pipe, and keeps going until the build times out.
Oddly enough, this does not reproduce on the Windows and macOS agents,
nor in a local Ubuntu 18.04.
This developer tried for a day to figure out the exact circumstances
under which this hang happens, to no avail, the details remain a
mystery.
In the end, though, what counts is that this here change incidentally
fixes that hang (maybe also on NonStop?). Even more positively, it gets
rid of yet another unnecessary Perl invocation.

Use a '!' character to start a non-matching pattern bracket
expression, as specified by POSIX in Shell Command Language section
2.13.1 Patterns Matching a Single Character [1].
I used '^' instead in three places in the previous three commits, to
verify that the arguments of the '--stress=' and '--stress-limit='
options and the values of various '*_PORT' environment variables are
valid numbers. With certain shells, at least with dash (upstream and
in Ubuntu 14.04) and mksh, this led to various undesired behaviors:

$ ~/src/dash/src/dash ./t3903-stash.sh --stress=8
error: --stress=<N> requires the number of jobs to run
# not the expected error message
$ ~/src/dash/src/dash ./t3903-stash.sh --stress=foo

Some other shells, e.g. Bash (even in posix mode), ksh, dash in Ubuntu
16.04 or later, are apparently happy to accept '^' just as well.

Unfortunately, we have a few flaky tests, whose failures tend to be
hard to reproduce. We've found that the best we can do to reproduce
such a failure is to run the test script repeatedly while the machine
is under load, and wait in the hope that the load creates enough
variance in the timing of the test's commands that a failure is
evenually triggered. I have a command to do that, and I noticed that
two other contributors have rolled their own scripts to do the same,
all choosing slightly different approaches.
To help reproduce failures in flaky tests, introduce the '--stress'
option to run a test script repeatedly in multiple parallel jobs until
one of them fails, thereby using the test script itself to increase
the load on the machine.
The number of parallel jobs is determined by, in order of precedence:
the number specified as '--stress=<N>', or the value of the
GIT_TEST_STRESS_LOAD environment variable, or twice the number of
available processors (as reported by the 'getconf' utility), or 8.
Make '--stress' imply '--verbose -x --immediate' to get the most
information about rare failures; there is really no point in spending
all the extra effort to reproduce such a failure, and then not know
which command failed and why.
To prevent the several parallel invocations of the same test from
interfering with each other:
- Include the parallel job's number in the name of the trash
directory and the various output files under 't/test-results/' as
a '.stress-<Nr>' suffix.
- Add the parallel job's number to the port number specified by the
user or to the test number, so even tests involving daemons
listening on a TCP socket can be stressed.
- Redirect each parallel test run's verbose output to
't/test-results/$TEST_NAME.stress-<nr>.out', because dumping the
output of several parallel running tests to the terminal would
create a big ugly mess.
For convenience, print the output of the failed test job at the end,
and rename its trash directory to end with the '.stress-failed'
suffix, so it's easy to find in a predictable path (OTOH, all absolute
paths recorded in the trash directory become invalid; we'll see
whether this causes any issues in practice). If, in an unlikely case,
more than one jobs were to fail nearly at the same time, then print
the output of all failed jobs, and rename the trash directory of only
the last one (i.e. with the highest job number), as it is the trash
directory of the test whose output will be at the bottom of the user's
terminal.

Several test scripts run daemons like 'git-daemon' or Apache, and
communicate with them through TCP sockets. To have unique ports where
these daemons are accessible, the ports are usually the number of the
corresponding test scripts, unless the user overrides them via
environment variables, and thus all those tests and test libs contain
more or less the same bit of one-liner boilerplate code to find out
the port. The last patch in this series will make this a bit more
complicated.
Factor out finding the port for a daemon into the common helper
function 'test_set_port' to avoid repeating ourselves.
Take special care of test scripts with "low" numbers:
- Test numbers below 1024 would result in a port that's only usable
as root, so set their port to '10000 + test-nr' to make sure it
doesn't interfere with other tests in the test suite. This makes
the hardcoded port number in 't0410-partial-clone.sh' unnecessary,
remove it.
- The shell's arithmetic evaluation interprets numbers with leading
zeros as octal values, which means that test number below 1000 and
containing the digits 8 or 9 will trigger an error. Remove all
leading zeros from the test numbers to prevent this.
Note that the 'git p4' tests are unlike the other tests involving
daemons in that:
- 'lib-git-p4.sh' doesn't use the test's number for unique port as
is, but does a bit of additional arithmetic on top [1].
- The port is not overridable via an environment variable.
With this patch even 'git p4' tests will use the test's number as
default port, and it will be overridable via the P4DPORT environment
variable.
[1] Commit fc00233071 (git-p4 tests: refactor and cleanup, 2011-08-22)
introduced that "unusual" unique port computation without
explaining why it was necessary (as opposed to simply using the
test number as is). It seems to be just unnecessary complication,
and in any case that commit came way before the "test nr as unique
port" got "standardized" for other daemons in commits c44132fcf3
(tests: auto-set git-daemon port, 2014-02-10), 3bb486e439 (tests:
auto-set LIB_HTTPD_PORT from test name, 2014-02-10), and
bf9d7df950 (t/lib-git-svn.sh: improve svnserve tests with parallel
make test, 2017-12-01).

The 'test_cmp_rev' helper is merely a wrapper around 'test_cmp'
checking the output of two 'git rev-parse' commands, which means that
its output on failure is not particularly informative, as it's
basically two OIDs with a bit of extra clutter of the diff header, but
without any indication of which two revisions have caused the failure:

It also pollutes the test repo with these two intermediate files,
though that doesn't seem to cause any complications in our current
tests (meaning that I couldn't find any tests that have to work around
the presence of these files by explicitly removing or ignoring them).
Enhance 'test_cmp_rev' to provide a more useful output on failure with
less clutter:
error: two revisions point to different objects:

Doing so is more convenient when storing the OIDs outputted by 'git

Some of the functions in our test library check that they were invoked
properly with conditions like this:
test "$#" = 2 ||
error "bug in the test script: not 2 parameters to test-expect-success"
If this particular condition is triggered, then 'error' will abort the
whole test script with a bold red error message [1] right away.
However, under certain circumstances the test script will be aborted
completely silently, namely if:
- a similar condition in a test helper function like
'test_line_count' is triggered,
- which is invoked from the test script's "main" shell [2],
- and the test script is run manually (i.e. './t1234-foo.sh' as
opposed to 'make t1234-foo.sh' or 'make test') [3]
- and without the '--verbose' option,
because the error message is printed from within 'test_eval_', where
standard output is redirected either to /dev/null or to a log file.
The only indication that something is wrong is that not all tests in
the script are executed and at the end of the test script's output
there is no "# passed all N tests" message, which are subtle and can
easily go unnoticed, as I had to experience myself.
Send these "bug in the test script" error messages directly to the
test scripts standard error and thus to the terminal, so those bugs
will be much harder to overlook. Instead of updating all ~20 such
'error' calls with a redirection, let's add a BUG() function to
'test-lib.sh', wrapping an 'error' call with the proper redirection
and also including the common prefix of those error messages, and
convert all those call sites [4] to use this new BUG() function
instead.
[1] That particular error message from 'test_expect_success' is
printed in color only when running with or without '--verbose';
with '--tee' or '--verbose-log' the error is printed without
color, but it is printed to the terminal nonetheless.
[2] If such a condition is triggered in a subshell of a test, then
'error' won't be able to abort the whole test script, but only the
subshell, which in turn causes the test to fail in the usual way,
indicating loudly and clearly that something is wrong.
[3] Well, 'error' aborts the test script the same way when run
manually or by 'make' or 'prove', but both 'make' and 'prove' pay
attention to the test script's exit status, and even a silently
aborted test script would then trigger those tools' usual
noticable error messages.
[4] Strictly speaking, not all those 'error' calls need that
redirection to send their output to the terminal, see e.g.
'test_expect_success' in the opening example, but I think it's
better to be consistent.

Our testing framework uses a special i18n "poisoned localization"
feature to find messages that ought to stay constant but are
incorrectly marked to be translated. This feature has been made
into a runtime option (it used to be a compile-time option).

On Windows, when we refer to `/an/absolute/path/to/git`, it magically
resolves `git.exe` at that location. Except if something of the name
`git` exists next to that `git.exe`. So if we call `$BUILD_DIR/git`, it
will find `$BUILD_DIR/git.exe` *only* if there is not, say, a directory
called `$BUILD_DIR/git`.
Such a directory, however, exists in Git for Windows when building with
Visual Studio (our Visual Studio project generator defaults to putting
the build files into a directory whose name is the base name of the
corresponding `.exe`).
In the bin-wrappers/* scripts, we already take pains to use `git.exe`
rather than `git`, as this could pick up the wrong thing on Windows
(i.e. if there exists a `git` file or directory in the build directory).
Now we do the same in the tests' start-up code.
This also helps when testing an installed Git, as there might be even
more likely some stray file or directory in the way.
Note: the only way we can record whether the `.exe` suffix is by writing
it to the `GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS` file and sourcing it at the beginning of
`t/test-lib.sh`. This is not a requirement introduced by this patch, but
we move the call to be able to use the `$X` variable that holds the file
extension, if any.
Note also: the many, many calls to `git this` and `git that` are
unaffected, as the regular PATH search will find the `.exe` files on
Windows (and not be confused by a directory of the name `git` that is
in one of the directories listed in the `PATH` variable), while
`/path/to/git` would not, per se, know that it is looking for an
executable and happily prefer such a directory.

Change the GETTEXT_POISON compile-time + runtime GIT_GETTEXT_POISON
test parameter to only be a GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=<non-empty?>
runtime parameter, to be consistent with other parameters documented
in "Running tests with special setups" in t/README.
When I added GETTEXT_POISON in bb946bba76 ("i18n: add GETTEXT_POISON
to simulate unfriendly translator", 2011-02-22) I was concerned with
ensuring that the _() function would get constant folded if NO_GETTEXT
was defined, and likewise that GETTEXT_POISON would be compiled out
unless it was defined.
But as the benchmark in my [1] shows doing a one-off runtime
getenv("GIT_TEST_[...]") is trivial, and since GETTEXT_POISON was
originally added the GIT_TEST_* env variables have become the common
idiom for turning on special test setups.
So change GETTEXT_POISON to work the same way. Now the
GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease compile-time option is gone, and running the
tests with GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=[YesPlease|] can be toggled on/off
without recompiling.
This allows for conditionally amending tests to test with/without
poison, similar to what 859fdc0c3c ("commit-graph: define
GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH", 2018-08-29) did for GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH. Do
some of that, now we e.g. always run the t0205-gettext-poison.sh test.
I did enough there to remove the GETTEXT_POISON prerequisite, but its
inverse C_LOCALE_OUTPUT is still around, and surely some tests using
it can be converted to e.g. always set GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=.
Notes on the implementation:
* We still compile a dedicated GETTEXT_POISON build in Travis
CI. Perhaps this should be revisited and integrated into the
"linux-gcc" build, see ae59a4e44f ("travis: run tests with
GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX", 2018-01-07) for prior art in that area. Then
again maybe not, see [2].
* We now skip a test in t0000-basic.sh under
GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease that wasn't skipped before. This
test relies on C locale output, but due to an edge case in how the
previous implementation of GETTEXT_POISON worked (reading it from
GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS) wasn't enabling poison correctly. Now it does,
and needs to be skipped.
* The getenv() function is not reentrant, so out of paranoia about
code of the form:
printf(_("%s"), getenv("some-env"));
call use_gettext_poison() in our early setup in git_setup_gettext()
so we populate the "poison_requested" variable in a codepath that's
won't suffer from that race condition.
* We error out in the Makefile if you're still saying
GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease to prompt users to change their
invocation.
* We should not print out poisoned messages during the test
initialization itself to keep it more readable, so the test library
hides the variable if set in $GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON_ORIG during
setup. See [3].
