2019-01-15tree-walk: store object_id in a separate memberbrian m. carlson1-5/+5
When parsing a tree, we read the object ID directly out of the tree buffer. This is normally fine, but such an object ID cannot be used with oidcpy, which copies GIT_MAX_RAWSZ bytes, because if we are using SHA-1, there may not be that many bytes to copy. Instead, store the object ID in a separate struct member. Since we can no longer efficiently compute the path length, store that information as well in struct name_entry. Ensure we only copy the object ID into the new buffer if the path length is nonzero, as some callers will pass us an empty path with no object ID following it, and we will not want to read past the end of the buffer. 2018-11-19tree-walk.c: make tree_entry_interesting() take an indexNguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-1/+2
In order to support :(attr) when matching pathspec on a tree, tree_entry_interesting() needs to take an index (because git_check_attr() needs it). This is the preparation step for it. This also makes it clearer what index we fall back to when looking up attributes during an unpack-trees operation: the source index. This also fixes revs->pruning.repo initialization that should have been done in 2abf350385 (revision.c: remove implicit dependency on the_index - 2018-09-21). It has been observed that the time spent loading an index with a large number of entries is partly dominated by malloc() calls. This change is in preparation for using memory pools to reduce the number of malloc() calls made to allocate cahce entries when loading an index. Add an API to allocate and discard cache entries, abstracting the details of managing the memory backing the cache entries. This commit does actually change how memory is managed - this will be done in a later commit in the series. This change makes the distinction between cache entries that are associated with an index and cache entries that are not associated with an index. A main use of cache entries is with an index, and we can optimize the memory management around this. We still have other cases where a cache entry is not persisted with an index, and so we need to handle the "transient" use case as well. To keep the congnitive overhead of managing the cache entries, there will only be a single discard function. This means there must be enough information kept with the cache entry so that we know how to discard them. A summary of the main functions in the API is: make_cache_entry: create cache entry for use in an index. Uses specified parameters to populate cache_entry fields. make_empty_cache_entry: Create an empty cache entry for use in an index. Returns cache entry with empty fields. make_transient_cache_entry: create cache entry that is not used in an index. Uses specified parameters to populate cache_entry fields. make_empty_transient_cache_entry: create cache entry that is not used in an index. Returns cache entry with empty fields. discard_cache_entry: A single function that knows how to discard a cache entry regardless of how it was allocated. This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less overwhelming to read. In particular, this moves: - read_object_file - oid_object_info - write_object_file As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h. In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever identifiers from the header are used. We have to convert all of the alloc functions at once, because alloc_report uses a funky macro for reporting. It is better for the sake of mechanical conversion to convert multiple functions at once rather than changing the structure of the reporting function. We record all memory allocation in alloc.c, and free them in clear_alloc_state, which is called for all repositories except the_repository. Using the commit-graph file to walk commit history removes the large cost of parsing commits during the walk. This exposes a performance issue: lookup_tree() takes a large portion of the computation time, even when Git never uses those trees. In anticipation of lazy-loading these trees, rename the 'tree' member of struct commit to 'maybe_tree'. This serves two purposes: it hints at the future role of possibly being NULL even if the commit has a valid tree, and it allows for unambiguous transformation from simple member access (i.e. commit->maybe_tree) to method access. Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *, leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface. parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch. When we call parse_commit, it will complain to stderr if the object does not exist or cannot be read. This means that we may produce useless error messages if this situation is expected (e.g., because the object is marked UNINTERESTING, or because revs->ignore_missing_links is set). We can fix this by adding a new "parse_X_gently" form that takes a flag to suppress the messages. The existing "parse_X" form is already gentle in the sense that it returns an error rather than dying, and we could in theory just add a "quiet" flag to it (with existing callers passing "0"). But doing it this way means we do not have to disturb existing callers. Note also that the new flag is "quiet_on_missing", and not just "quiet". We could add a flag to suppress _all_ errors, but besides being a more invasive change (we would have to pass the flag down to sub-functions, too), there is a good reason not to: we would never want to use it. Missing a linked object is expected in some circumstances, but it is never expected to have a malformed commit, or to get a tree when we wanted a commit. When we call lookup_commit, lookup_tree, etc, the logic goes something like: 1. Look for an existing object struct. If we don't have one, allocate and return a new one. 2. Double check that any object we have is the expected type (and complain and return NULL otherwise). 3. Convert an object with type OBJ_NONE (from a prior call to lookup_unknown_object) to the expected type. We can encapsulate steps 2 and 3 in a helper function which checks whether we have the expected object type, converts OBJ_NONE as appropriate, and returns the object. Not only does this shorten the code, but it also provides one central location for converting OBJ_NONE objects into objects of other types. Future patches will use that to enforce type-specific invariants. Since this is a refactoring, we would want it to behave exactly as the current code. It takes a little reasoning to see that this is the case: - for lookup_{commit,tree,etc} functions, we are just pulling steps 2 and 3 into a function that does the same thing. - for the call in peel_object, we currently only do step 3 (but we want to consolidate it with the others, as mentioned above). However, step 2 is a noop here, as the surrounding conditional makes sure we have OBJ_NONE (which we want to keep to avoid an extraneous call to sha1_object_info). - for the call in lookup_commit_reference_gently, we are currently doing step 2 but not step 3. However, step 3 is a noop here. The object we got will have just come from deref_tag, which must have figured out the type for each object in order to know when to stop peeling. The "struct object" type implements basic object polymorphism. Individual instances are allocated as concrete types (or as a union type that can store any object), and a "struct object *" can be cast into its real type after examining its "type" enum. This means it is dangerous to have a type field that does not match the allocation (e.g., setting the type field of a "struct blob" to "OBJ_COMMIT" would mean that a reader might read past the allocated memory). In most of the current code this is not a problem; the first thing we do after allocating an object is usually to set its type field by passing it to create_object. However, the virtual commits we create in merge-recursive.c do not ever get their type set. This does not seem to have caused problems in practice, though (presumably because we always pass around a "struct commit" pointer and never even look at the type). We can fix this oversight and also make it harder for future code to get it wrong by setting the type directly in the object allocation functions. This will also make it easier to fix problems with commit index allocation, as we know that any object allocated by alloc_commit_node will meet the invariant that an object with an OBJ_COMMIT type field will have a unique index number. I attempted to make index_state->cache[] a "const struct cache_entry **" to find out how existing entries in index are modified and where. The question I have is what do we do if we really need to keep track of on-disk changes in the index. The result is - diff-lib.c: setting CE_UPTODATE - name-hash.c: setting CE_HASHED - preload-index.c, read-cache.c, unpack-trees.c and builtin/update-index: obvious - entry.c: write_entry() may refresh the checked out entry via fill_stat_cache_info(). This causes "non-const struct cache_entry *" in builtin/apply.c, builtin/checkout-index.c and builtin/checkout.c - builtin/ls-files.c: --with-tree changes stagemask and may set CE_UPDATE Of these, write_entry() and its call sites are probably most interesting because it modifies on-disk info. But this is stat info and can be retrieved via refresh, at least for porcelain commands. Other just uses ce_flags for local purposes. So, keeping track of "dirty" entries is just a matter of setting a flag in index modification functions exposed by read-cache.c. Except unpack-trees, the rest of the code base does not do anything funny behind read-cache's back. The actual patch is less valueable than the summary above. 2013-06-06clear parsed flag when we free tree buffersJeff King1-0/+8
Many code paths will free a tree object's buffer and set it to NULL after finishing with it in order to keep memory usage down during a traversal. However, out of 8 sites that do this, only one actually unsets the "parsed" flag back. Those sites that don't are setting a trap for later users of the tree object; even after calling parse_tree, the buffer will remain NULL, causing potential segfaults. It is not known whether this is triggerable in the current code. Most commands do not do an in-memory traversal followed by actually using the objects again. However, it does not hurt to be safe for future callers. In most cases, we can abstract this out to a "free_tree_buffer" helper. However, there are two exceptions: 1. The fsck code relies on the parsed flag to know that we were able to parse the object at one point. We can switch this to using a flag in the "flags" field. 2. The index-pack code sets the buffer to NULL but does not free it (it is freed by a caller). We should still unset the parsed flag here, but we cannot use our helper, as we do not want to free the buffer. This will both give us a tiny bit of a performance enhancement when working with long pathnames and is a refactoring for more readability of the code. It enhances readability, by making it more clear what is a flag, and where the length is stored and make it clear which functions use stages in comparisions and which only use the length. It also makes CE_NAMEMASK private, so that users don't mistakenly write the name length in the flags. 2007-08-10Optimize "diff --cached" performance.Junio C Hamano1-3/+66
The read_tree() function is called only from the call chain to run "git diff --cached" (this includes the internal call made by git-runstatus to run_diff_index()). The function vacates stage without any funky "merge" magic. The caller then goes and compares stage #1 entries from the tree with stage #0 entries from the original index. When adding the cache entries this way, it used the general purpose add_cache_entry(). This function looks for an existing entry to replace or if there is none to find where to insert the new entry, resolves D/F conflict and all the other things. For the purpose of reading entries into an empty stage, none of that processing is needed. We can instead append everything and then sort the result at the end. This commit changes read_tree() to first make sure that there is no existing cache entries at specified stage, and if that is the case, it runs add_cache_entry() with ADD_CACHE_JUST_APPEND flag (new), and then sort the resulting cache using qsort(). This new flag tells add_cache_entry() to omit all the checks such as "Does this path already exist? Does adding this path remove other existing entries because it turns a directory to a file?" and instead append the given cache entry straight at the end of the active cache. One of them is obviously redundent, and the most used one requires more stack space and a bunch of strcmp() all over the place. The patch is unfortunately large but there is no sane way to split it in smaller parts without breaking the system. This abstracts away the size of the hash values when copying them from memory location to memory location, much as the introduction of hashcmp abstracted away hash value comparsion. A few call sites were using char* rather than unsigned char* so I added the cast rather than open hashcpy to be void*. This is a reasonable tradeoff as most call sites already use unsigned char* and the existing hashcmp is also declared to be unsigned char*. This creates a simple specialized object allocator for basic objects. This avoids wasting space with malloc overhead (metadata and extra alignment), since the specialized allocator knows the alignment, and that objects, once allocated, are never freed. It also allows us to track some basic statistics about object allocations. For example, for the mozilla import, it shows object usage as follows: blobs: 627629 (14710 kB) trees: 1119035 (34969 kB) commits: 196423 (8440 kB) tags: 1336 (46 kB) and the simpler allocator shaves off about 2.5% off the memory footprint off a "git-rev-list --all --objects", and is a bit faster too. [ Side note: this concludes the series of "save memory in object storage". The thing is, there simply isn't much more to be saved on the objects. Doing "git-rev-list --all --objects" on the mozilla archive has a final total RSS of 131498 pages for me: that's about 513MB. Of that, the object overhead is now just 56MB, the rest is going somewhere else (put another way: the fact that this patch shaves off 2.5% of the total memory overhead, considering that objects are now not much more than 10% of the total shows how big the wasted space really was: this makes object allocations much more memory- and time-efficient). I haven't looked at where the rest is, but I suspect the bulk of it is just the pack-file loading. It may be that we should pack the tree objects separately from the blob objects: for git-rev-list --objects, we don't actually ever need to even look at the blobs, but since trees and blobs are interspersed in the pack-file, we end up not being dense in the tree accesses, so we end up looking at more pages than we strictly need to. So with a 535MB pack-file, it's entirely possible - even likely - that most of the remaining RSS is just the mmap of the pack-file itself. This shrinks "struct object" by a small amount, by getting rid of the "struct type *" pointer and replacing it with a 3-bit bitfield instead. In addition, we merge the bitfields and the "flags" field, which incidentally should also remove a useless 4-byte padding from the object when in 64-bit mode. Now, our "struct object" is still too damn large, but it's now less obviously bloated, and of the remaining fields, only the "util" (which is not used by most things) is clearly something that should be eventually discarded. This shrinks the "git-rev-list --all" memory use by about 2.5% on the kernel archive (and, perhaps more importantly, on the larger mozilla archive). That may not sound like much, but I suspect it's more on a 64-bit platform. There are other remaining inefficiencies (the parent lists, for example, probably have horrible malloc overhead), but this was pretty obvious. Most of the patch is just changing the comparison of the "type" pointer from one of the constant string pointers to the appropriate new TYPE_xxx small integer constant. This adds a "tree_entry()" function that combines the common operation of doing a "tree_entry_extract()" + "update_tree_entry()". It also has a simplified calling convention, designed for simple loops that traverse over a whole tree: the arguments are pointers to the tree descriptor and a name_entry structure to fill in, and it returns a boolean "true" if there was an entry left to be gotten in the tree. This allows tree traversal with struct tree_desc desc; struct name_entry entry; desc.buf = tree->buffer; desc.size = tree->size; while (tree_entry(&desc, &entry) { ... use "entry.{path, sha1, mode, pathlen}" ... } which is not only shorter than writing it out in full, it's hopefully less error prone too. [ It's actually a tad faster too - we don't need to recalculate the entry pathlength in both extract and update, but need to do it only once. Also, some callers can avoid doing a "strlen()" on the result, since it's returned as part of the name_entry structure. However, by now we're talking just 1% speedup on "git-rev-list --objects --all", and we're definitely at the point where tree walking is no longer the issue any more. ] NOTE! Not everybody wants to use this new helper function, since some of the tree walkers very much on purpose do the descriptor update separately from the entry extraction. So the "extract + update" sequence still remains as the core sequence, this is just a simplified interface. We should probably add a silly two-line inline helper function for initializing the descriptor from the "struct tree" too, just to cut down on the noise from that common "desc" initializer. Yes, we now still have a compatibility function to create a bogus tree_entry_list in builtin-read-tree.c, but that is now entirely local to that very messy piece of code. I'd love to clean read-tree.c up too, but I'm too scared right now, so the best I can do is to just contain the damage, and try to make sure that no new users of the tree_entry_list sprout up by not having it as an exported interface any more. Instead, just use the tree buffer directly, and use the tree-walk infrastructure to walk the buffers instead of the tree-entry list. The tree-entry list is inefficient, and generates tons of small allocations for no good reason. The tree-walk infrastructure is generally no harder to use than following a linked list, and allows us to do most tree parsing in-place. Some programs still use the old tree-entry lists, and are a bit painful to convert without major surgery. For them we have a helper function that creates a temporary tree-entry list on demand. ISO C99 (and GCC 3.x or later) lets you write a flexible array at the end of a structure, like this: struct frotz { int xyzzy; char nitfol[]; /* more */ }; GCC 2.95 and 2.96 let you to do this with "char nitfol[0]"; unfortunately this is not allowed by ISO C90. This declares such construct like this: struct frotz { int xyzzy; char nitfol[FLEX_ARRAY]; /* more */ }; and git-compat-util.h defines FLEX_ARRAY to 0 for gcc 2.95 and empty for others. git-ls-tree should be rewritten to use a pathspec the same way everybody else does. Right now it's the odd man out: if you do git-ls-tree HEAD divers/char drivers/ it will show the same files _twice_, which is not how pathspecs in general work. How about this patch? It breaks some of the git-ls-tree tests, but it makes git-ls-tree work a lot more like other git pathspec commands, and it removes more than 150 lines by re-using the recursive tree traversal (but the "-d" flag is gone for good, so I'm not pushing this too hard). This cuts down memory usage of utilities which use object references; e.g., git-fsck-objects --full on the git.git repository consumes about 2 MB of memory tracked by Massif instead of 7 MB before the change. Object refs are still the biggest consumer of memory (57%), but the malloc overhead for a single block instead of a linked list is substantially smaller. This is a complete rewrite of ls-tree to make it behave more like what "/bin/ls -a" does in the current working directory. Namely, the changes are: - Unlike the old ls-tree behaviour that used paths arguments to restrict output (not that it worked as intended---as pointed out in the mailing list discussion, it was quite incoherent), this rewrite uses paths arguments to specify what to show. - Without arguments, it implicitly uses the root level as its sole argument ("/bin/ls -a" behaves as if "." is given without argument). - Without -r (recursive) flag, it shows the named blob (either file or symlink), or the named tree and its immediate children. - With -r flag, it shows the named path, and recursively descends into it if it is a tree. - With -d flag, it shows the named path and does not show its children even if the path is a tree, nor descends into it recursively. This is still request-for-comments patch. There is no mailing list consensus that this proposed new behaviour is a good one. The patch to t/t3100-ls-tree-restrict.sh illustrates user-visible behaviour changes. Namely: * "git-ls-tree $tree path1 path0" lists path1 first and then path0. It used to use paths as an output restrictor and showed output in cache entry order (i.e. path0 first and then path1) regardless of the order of paths arguments. * "git-ls-tree $tree path2" lists path2 and its immediate children but having explicit paths argument does not imply recursive behaviour anymore, hence paths/baz is shown but not paths/baz/b. When "path" exists as a file or a symlink in the index, an attempt to add "path/file" is refused because it results in file vs directory conflict. With git-update-cache --replace, these existing entries that conflict with the entry being added are automatically removed from the cache, with warning messages. This patch introduces the ability to parse specific objects directly from a memory buffer. Without this patch, running git-fsck-cache on the kernel repositorytake: real 0m13.006s user 0m11.421s sys 0m1.218s With this patch applied: real 0m8.060s user 0m7.071s sys 0m0.710s The performance increase is significant, and this is kind of a prerequisite for sane delta object support with fsck.
