School History

In January 2014, the Houston Independent School District announced the opening of two Middle College High Schools that have been specifically designed to reengage and graduate students who don’t feel that a traditional high school is a good fit. HISD’s Middle College High School-Gulfton aims to re-engage students who feel disconnected from or distracted by the traditional high school culture so that you can proceed with your studies and accelerate your college and career readiness.

We offer personalized instruction through one-on-one support and small classes — only about 15 students per teacher and a student body of 100 — that will lead to a diploma while providing opportunities for college credits and workforce certifications through UT OnRamps.

We’re looking for students who want to succeed but may have encountered a few setbacks along the way. You may be someone who needs to recover credits, be an older student, or have family and work responsibilities. What you all will have in common is the desire to earn your diploma and move onto to success at the next level, at college or in a career.
