I am migrating from a self hosted on-premises 2013 SharePoint farm to a self-hosted Azure 2016 Farm. We are using a provider hosted web application (hosted app) on our 2013 farm and we use host named site collections (hnsc) for each site collection.

The company is wanting to change the domain name that the new 2016 farm will use but would like to set the new farm up on the exiting domain names and change the domain name later.

  1. Is it possible to run hnsc clientA.companyurl.com on the 2013 farm while clientb.companyurl.com is served from a different farm?
  2. Can a farm like this have a domain name change for the web app, the individual sites and the hosted applicatoin after all these had been setup on a different domain?

Thank you

Yes, it is possible to setup clientA.companyurl.com at the same time on both 2013 and 2016 farms. Ultimately, they are a name to SharePoint. DNS is what controls where the traffic goes. So, the answer to 1 is yes, and to do it you would send clientA.companyurl.com to the IP address of the site on 2013 farm and clientb.companyurl.com to the IP address of the site 2016 farm. The answer to 2 is also yes. You would just need to add the new name under a different zone (internet, intranet, etc. doesn't matter) and then update DNS.
