I have a fairly simple set of data which has an inner array stored in a variable named finances. The first array element is a header row of Month and Amount.

I need to calculate a sum of all the amounts. Where do I start?

var finances = [
['Month', 'Amount'],
['Jan-2010', 867884],
['Feb-2010', 984655],
['Mar-2010', 322013],

];

//Make the inner array into a table
console.table(finances);

// Count the number of rows in the table, and subtract 1 for the header row
var NumberOfMonths = finances.length - 1;
console.log(NumberOfMonths);

I used the table(finances) in the console to see that the data is appropriate to find a sum. I also did a NumberOfMonths variable to check that all parts of the data are included in the array.

  • "I have a fairly simple set of data" where does it come from? why does it contain this row ['Month', 'Amount'],? because now you have to deal with the fact that your data contains this row. Every time you want to do anything with finances you have to include a rule that ignores this specific row. Commented Dec 27, 2022 at 17:39
  • Thank you. The data is just a sample set for me to work with. I added the header row to make it clearer to me what I was working with. Commented Dec 27, 2022 at 18:08
  • Then better use objects: var finances = [ { month: 'Jan-2010', amount: 867884 }, { month: 'Feb-2010', amount: 984655 }, { month: 'Mar-2010', amount: 322013 }, ... ] Commented Dec 27, 2022 at 18:20

Try this:

finances.slice(1).reduce((sum, arr) => sum + arr[1], 0);

If I remove the header row of data, we just change slice(1) to slice(0)?
@JonGarnett-Smith if you remove the header row you don't need to slice at all. finances.reduce(...)

let numOr0 = n => isNaN(n) ? 0 : n

console.log(
  finances.reduce((a, b) =>
    numOr0(a) + numOr0(b[1]))
)

try this solution - it's just an example of how to do it

Just iterate through the inner arrays and calculate the sum of the second elements.

function sumAmount(finance){
    let sum = 0;
    for (let row of finance){
        sum += row[1];
    }
    return sum;
}

Check it yourself, I get there some "weird" result.
Maybe because you passed the array as it is .. you should remove the first row because it contains a string. You can remove it with finance.slice(1). That means call the function like this: console.log( sumAmount( finance.slice(1) ) );
