How do I safely use my Fitbit watch or tracker?

These guidelines help you care for your Fitbit device, stay safe, and avoid possible discomfort from its use. If you experience issues, try loosening your device or temporarily stop using it.

Safety and care guidelines for your Fitbit device

Properly charge your Fitbit

  • Use the charger that came with your device. We do not recommend using unofficial third-party chargers.
  • Remove any metal or magnetic objects such as metal bands or jewelry, from the charging pins before you begin.
  • Do not charge your device when it's wet. Thoroughly dry your device before charging it.
  • Keep the charging contacts on the back of your device and the pins on the charging cable clean and free of debris. For more information, refer to How do I clean my Fitbit device?
  • Make sure the device and its charging components are well-ventilated. Do not cover the device, cable, or adapter with a blanket or pillow while charging.
  • For best results, do not leave your device plugged in on the charger longer than overnight.
  • After charging your device, unplug the charging cable.
  • Avoid charging your device in direct sunlight.

Clean and care for your Fitbit

Use and store your Fitbit long term

  • Do not leave it in the drawer for prolonged periods of time. Ideally, charge your device every 6 months or more.
    • If you want to store your device for several weeks or months, charge it to 100% then turn off the device to avoid additional battery use. Note that you can only turn off certain Fitbit devices. For more information, refer to How do I turn off my Fitbit device?
    • For trackers, charge the device to 100% at least once every 6 months.
    • For watches, charge the device to 100% at least once per year.

Avoid using or charging Fitbit devices in extreme weather

  • Recommended temperature ranges
    • Your device works best between ambient temperatures of 32° and 104° F (0° and 40° C).
    • Your device should be stored between ambient temperatures of -4 °F and 113 °F (-20 °C and 45 °C).
    • For your specific device, refer to your user manual.
  • If your device was exposed to extreme heat or cold, wait until your device has reached room temperature before attempting to charge or use it.

If your Fitbit Watch or tracker causes discomfort

Your Fitbit device is overheating

If your device feels warm, hot, or you feel a burning sensation while you’re wearing it, remove it immediately.

Skin irritation, allergic reactions, or rashes while wearing a Fitbit device

Review the Fitbit Product Care guide. Stop wearing your device and let your skin rest. If any of those symptoms persist, consider contacting a dermatologist as well as our customer support team.

Shock, tingling, soreness, stiffness, or numbness while wearing a Fitbit device

If you experience any discomfort, loosen the band, give your wrist a break, and take it off. Contact support for assistance.

Your Fitbit device appears damaged

Important:

  • If there is immediate danger, contact emergency services immediately.
  • If the product is on fire, contact the fire department immediately.

Contact support and stop using your device if:

  • You suspect the battery is swollen, bloated, leaking, exploded, or popped.
  • Your device is charging and you find visible damage or issues on the device such as melting, smoking, property damage from the surrounding areas, or sparks.
  • Your product caught fire.
  • The device or its components were swallowed by a child or a pet.
  • Sharp edges on the device caused a cut or injury.
