Bihar Assembly Election 2025 Live Updates: Congress CEC likely to decide on Bihar poll candidates on October 8

Bihar Assembly Election 2025 Date Announcement Live: The Election Commission has announced that the Bihar Assembly elections will be held in two phases, on November 6 and 11, with the results to be declared on November 14. The announcement comes after a two-day review of poll preparedness in Bihar, during which the ECI held discussions with political parties and enforcement agencies to ensure free, fair, and smooth elections.

The upcoming electoral battle is expected to be a head-to-head contest between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and the Mahagathbandhan, spearheaded by Tejashwi Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The 243-member Bihar Assembly currently has 131 NDA seats and 111 Mahagathbandhan seats.

On Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar unveiled 17 new initiatives for the polls. Speaking at a press conference in Patna, he said, “Seventeen new initiatives have been successfully implemented in Bihar; some will be implemented in the conduct of elections, and some in counting.” He highlighted improvements in voter list management, explaining that Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) in all 243 constituencies, along with 90,207 Booth Level Officers (BLOs), completed a voter list cleansing after nearly 22 years.

Other measures include doubling remuneration for BLOs, polling and counting staff, CAPF personnel, and micro-observers. For the first time, honoraria will also be provided to EROs and AEROs, along with better refreshments. Voter convenience initiatives include mobile phone deposit counters outside polling stations and colour photographs of candidates on EVMs. The CEC added that 100 percent webcasting will be carried out at every booth.

During the ECI visit, representatives from national and state parties, including BJP, JD(U), RJD, Congress, CPI(M), CPI(ML), BSP, and AAP, suggested holding elections after Chhath, Bihar’s major festival. JD(U) Bihar president Umesh Singh Kushwaha said, “We have urged the ECI to conduct elections in a single phase and just right after Chhath Puja so that people living outside the state can also cast their vote.” BJP Bihar chief Dilip Jaiswal requested paramilitary deployment in backward areas to ensure voter comfort.

The final electoral roll, published on September 30, lists 7.42 crore voters, down from 7.89 crore in June. The NDA currently holds 131 seats (BJP 80, JD(U) 45, HAM(S) 4, 2 Independents), while the Mahagathbandhan holds 111 seats (RJD 77, Congress 19, CPI(ML) 11, CPI(M) 2, CPI 2). Political activity has intensified across the state as parties step up campaigns ahead of the high-stakes polls.

Union minister Manjhi hails EC's two-phase Bihar polls as deterrent to 'booth looters'

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi praised the Election Commission's decision to hold the Bihar Assembly elections in just two phases, asserting that the limited schedule would ensure a fairer poll.

Manjhi stated that the Commission has "wisely declared the elections in two phases," explaining his view that fewer phases reduce opportunities for illicit activities.

He specifically remarked that holding elections in more phases "gives booth looters more opportunities," but conversely, holding them in fewer phases means "booth looters will have fewer opportunities, and there will be neutral voting."

He further expressed confidence that the elections would be conducted with "utmost transparency."

They did not answer.” He added, “The questions that INDIA bloc and Rahul Gandhi asked, no answers have been given.”

Khera alleged that the timing of the announcement allowed the ruling NDA to influence voters financially. “If this is not 'gathbandhan' (alliance) between the BJP and the EC then what is it?” he asked, also accusing the government of “stealing pensions, rations, jobs.”
