TkAgg... GTKAgg. What difference does a letter make.
That helped. I couldn't remember the windows backend.
I still have a problem, but now it's the same if I import either
matplotlib or pylab:

This means you don't have pygtk properly installed and you have GTK*
as one of the backends. Check your matplotlibrc file and either set
the backend to something else (eg TkAgg) or install pygtk.
Charlie -- I thought we were setting the default backend to TkAgg for
win32 installs.

I have done a bunch of upgrading (python, scipy, numpy, ipython, matlotlib,
pyreadline, ctypes) and of course things are broken. Everything seems to be
ok except for matplotlib. I think it is a backend problem, but I am
nobody's expert on backends. I searched the archives for "gobject" but
didn't see anything that I could use.
Here's the versions (Win2k):
python 2.4.3
scipy .4.9
numpy .9.8
ipython .7.2
matplotlib .87.3

I am 99% sure this is a font problem. matplotlib embeds the truetype
font into the PS file, which accounts for most of the file size. Paul
Barrett at one point looked into just embedding he glyphs we use
rather than the entire font file but was unsuccessful. It would be
nice if some font guru could revisit this issue at some point since it
would be a big win in terms of file size. What appears to be
happening is that mpl is finding and using a native os x font rather
than the Vera fonts that mpl ships with.
Try editing your matplotlib rc file and change these font preferences
font.serif : New Century Schoolbook, Century Schoolbook L, Utopia, ITC Bookman, Bookman, Bitstream Vera Serif, Nimbus Roman No9 L, Times New Roman, Times, Palatino, Charter, serif
font.sans-serif : Lucida Grande, Verdana, Geneva, Lucida, Bitstream Vera Sans, Arial, Helvetica, Avant Garde, sans-serif
font.cursive : Apple Chancery, Textile, Zapf Chancery, Sand, cursive
font.fantasy : Comic Sans MS, Chicago, Charcoal, Impact, Western, fantasy
font.monospace : Andale Mono, Bitstream Vera Sans Mono, Nimbus Mono L, Courier New, Courier, Fixed, Terminal, monospace
by moving the bitstream fonts to the front.
I'm inclined to make the bitstream fonts the default (the first item
in the default rc list) so that others won't be bitten by this until
we solve the "dump the entire font" problem. Any objections?
Benoit, please let us know if this fixes your problem. After changing
the rc file, please recursively remove ~/.matplotlib/ttffont.cache
before rerunning. Also, if you run your script with --verbose-debug
you will get information about which fonts are loaded.

Ok, usetex is going to do postscript processing in the user's current
directory, but only on windows. On other platforms, the work is done in a
temp directory. I've tested my changes on linux and windows, and committed
them to svn as of 2528. Feedback appreciated.

Ignore my last post. I forgot it was .ps that I had trouble with =20 not .eps. I haven't tested either in while so maybe something is broken now. I have always had problems with the eps on a Mac. I save it as .ps =20 and then use Distiller (or equivalent) to convert to eps. Thanks Jouni, that was a creative suggestion. Unfortunately it doesn't work on
my windows laptop because dvips doesnt find the embedded file unless I either
run dvips in the directory containing the file to embed or I pass an absolute
path to includegraphics. I tried wrapping the \includegraphics statement with
the catcode shifts you suggested, but it didnt work.

I don't have a Windows system to test on, but on a Mac the following trick
seems to deal with the tildes:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\catcode`\~11
\graphicspath{{/tmp/foo~bar/}}
\catcode`\~13
\begin{document}
\includegraphics{stuff.pdf}
\end{document}
If I put stuff.pdf in /tmp/foo~bar, pdflatex (from TeX Live) finds it
just fine. Handling spaces seem to be a more difficult problem...

Hi, First of all, I'd like to thank matplotlib developers for providing us=20 this wonderful library. It's been a while now I'm using matplotlib and I'm pretty happy with=20 it. I used to be a Linux user. Recently, I moved to Mac (a macbook=20 pro, to be precise). I succeed to install matplotlib. Everything is=20 working correctly except the export of figures into eps format (which is=20 important when writing papers with LaTeX). When I'm trying to save a figure in eps, everything seems ok. However,=20 it is impossible to open the eps file. The eps seems to be corrupted. A=20 closer look at the eps file shows that the generated file is 'heavy',=20 i.e., several MB (around 6MB on average). Note that other output=20 formats are correctly generated. I don't really understand the source of the problem. Probably something=20 that is misconfigured. If somebody has an idea on how to solve this=20 problem, it would be great. Sorry for the noise. It was just a missing \usepackage{graphicx} in the

I have a little time and am trying to fix this bug.
Wolfgang, would you try running the following:
import os
from tempfile import gettempdir
os.system('cd %s & latex -help'% gettempdir())
If that doesnt work, than I need to pass an absolute path/eps_filename to=20
\includegraphics. The problem is that on windows, the TEMP environment=20
variable is something like 'C:\\Documents and Settings\\Darren\\Local=20
Settings\\Temp' or 'C:\\DOCUME~1\\Darren\\LOCALS~1\\TEMP', and=20
\includegraphics is not able to deal with filenames that have spaces or=20
tildes (this has been declared a feature, not a bug).=20
I need advice from some of the mpl gurus. If I can't do the os.system('cd .=
=2E.)=20
trick, should I request that windows users either change their temp=20
environment variable to something like c:\temp, should I request that they=
=20
make a new environment variable called mpltemp, or should I just process th=
e=20
file in the current directory?
Thanks,
Darren

Hi all,
I have generated some figures with matplotlib (savefig('test.png')
savefig(test.jpg')).
If I try to include them via
\includegraphics[width=8cm]{test.jpg}
I get
LaTeX Error: Cannot determine size of graphic in test.jpg (no BoundingBox).
I am using latest svn versions of numpy/scipy and matplotlib.
Any idea how to fix this problem ?

color.

The format color string applies to the marker or line -- this is

"hold" controls whether multiple lines are plotted on the same axes or
whether the axes is cleared with successive plots. To disable
autoscaling, use
ax.set_autoscale_on(False)
Tony> PLT.axis([0.0,6.0,0.0,7.0])

Hello. First of all, a big thanks for this great tool! The instructions for installation of matplotlib in Debian at matplotlib website are a bit outdated. It recommends to add a new package repository to /etc/apt/sources.list. But this repository is completely outdated (latest matplotlib version there is 0.82). Debian has already accepted python-matplotlib into the package system (testing and unstable), there is no need to add repositories. Installing mpl on testing and unstable is just: apt-get install python-matplotlib For stable I'd suggest the user to use packages from testing instead of 0.82. Or adding a more updated repository. -- Regards Leandro Lameiro Blog: http://lameiro.redirectme.net/blog |

Hi everyone,
I have three lists like
x = [x1,x2,x3, ......xn]
y = [y1,y2,y3, ......yn]
z = [z1,z2,z3, ..... zn]
How can I contour z against x, y plane?
Since I know nothing about Matlab. Based on the contour_demo.py, I still don't know how to contour my three list x, y, z.
Thanks for your help.

Hi! I searchd in the documentation, but couldn't find anything useful. I want to be able to plot a couple of yearly time series (so that one can see the difference between some variable in one particular year with respect to another year). Additionally, I would also like to have a plot of the mean (and stanard deviation) of several years, and to plot another time series on those same axes. I was wondering if there is some better solution to the one I found, which involves subtracting the 1st of January of the year in the data and using the Julian date. I would like to use day/month markers on the plot, but apart from referring all the plots to the same year (by adding or subtracting a fixed value to each year), which is a bit mesy, I haven't been able to do this. Is there something I can easily do to have my plot from January to December showing two curves with dates from 01/Jan/2001 to 31/Dec/2001 and the other with dates running from 01/Jan/2004 to 31/Dec/2004? Cheers! jose |

Hi, If I'm plotting y-values >1000 then I get "x1e4" at the top of the diagram and the yticks become 0.xxx. I rather want to have the real numbers (not in the scientific format). Is that difficult to achieve? Thanks, wr |

I have a similar problem because I use bigfonts. If you are going to make a lot of these plots, you can change the default for left, bottom, height, and width in your matplotlibrc file. Look for the lines: figure.subplot.left : 0.15 #0.125 # the left side of the subplots of the figure figure.subplot.right : 0.925 # the right side of the subplots of the fig= ure figure.subplot.bottom : 0.125 # the bottom of the subplots of the figure figure.subplot.top : 0.925 # the top of the subplots of the figure matplotlib looks for this rc file first in the working directory and then in your home directory (possibly looking in other places along the way). So, you could put a copy of matplotlibrc in the directory where you are making a lot of these plots if you don't want to change the bottom setting for all your plots.
