I normally just plot a whole bunch of arrays... and then add the color bar
sc1 = f1s1.scatter(array[:,0], array[:,1], c=array[:,2], s=50,
cmap='spectral',edgecolor='w')
bar = pyl.colorbar(sc1)
bar.set_label("label")
