Depends on the backend, different GUIs load different icons. Here is
what I get for the PNGs
In [1]: from matplotlib.image import imread
In [2]: X = imread('images/home.png')
In [3]: X.shape
Out[3]: (24, 24, 4)
and I think that will be consistent for all the raster based image
formats. tkagg uses the ppm formats (you use tkagg, right?).
