Yep, that did it.  I installed it from tomcat.apache.org and
everything worked immediately.  Only my development machine is running
debian (ubuntu) so I'll have to figure this out for gentoo and red hat
as well, but I think that'll be easy enough, I really just needed a
proof of concept.
