  Thanks for the help.  I solved the problem moments after posting.  I see that just replacing the exe provided with one I built (with cgi & mysql enabled) does the trick.

yum install php-cgi php-mysql

doesn't work? -- (one command is for ubuntu, the other one for redhat)
