I'm not familier with the virtual hosts settings and
aliases, but as I understood it, one must add a
<Directory> entry for the DocumentRoot. I have tested
this with 3.0.8rc3:

------(apache frontend, tomcat backend setting)---
the following example is for Apache 2. Edit e.g.
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf as follows: 

# documents. By default, all requests are taken from
this directory, but
# symbolic links and aliases may be used to point to
other locations.
#
-DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"
+DocumentRoot "/var/lib/tomcat5/webapps"

#
# Each directory to which Apache has access can be
configured with respect
#
# This should be changed to whatever you set
DocumentRoot to.
#
-<Directory "/var/www/html">
+<Directory "/var/lib/tomcat5/webapps">


Edit the php.ini or add a file php-tomcat.ini to the
directory which contains the php module descriptions
(usually /etc/php.d/), so that it contains: 

[java]
java.hosts = 127.0.0.1:8080
java.servlet = On

But I am not sure if that works in a virtual host
