I have an installation of Spring Boot, using Gradle to manage my dependencies. The error displayed is:

:test

com.chefinator.ChefinatorApplicationTests > contextLoads FAILED
    java.lang.IllegalStateException
        Caused by: java.lang.IllegalStateException
            Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
                Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException

1 test completed, 1 failed
:test FAILED

FAILURE: Build failed with an exception.

* What went wrong:
Execution failed for task ':test'.

This error never started occurring until I had to add the Spring Framework JDBC dependency to my build.gradle file.

compile('org.springframework:spring-jdbc:4.2.2.RELEASE')

When I remove the JDBC dependency, the test magically starts to build again without any errors.

The error trace is as follows:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Failed to load ApplicationContext

I'm really struggling to crack what the issue is and it's driving me up the wall. I need the dependency but it doesn't want to cooperate for some reason.

Does anybody have any ideas whatsoever? Thanks!

Adding just the JDBC jar gets spring boot to start trying to do additional configuration (which requires more jars - in this case EventListenerFactory. You should include the jdbc starter to ensure you get all the necessary dependencies for auto configuration:

compile('org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-jdbc:1.2.7.RELEASE')

Replace 1.2.7 with whatever version of spring boot you are using.

In case someone finds it relavent - I had the same issue, just using spring-boot-web 1.5.3. The cause there was using Junit pre 4.12.

In case when you are running test using gradle test, then you get a very succinct message. In order to get the actual reason for failure, you can run the test in the IDE by delegating the task to the gradle. By doing so, you will be able to see exact dependency issue which is leading to class not found exception. In scenarios where I was getting the cryptic message was because my test cases were missing runtime dependency for mssql server jar: runtimeOnly "com.microsoft.sqlserver:mssql-jdbc:${mssql_jdbc_version}" force
