We have a custom Windows web browser forked from Firefox and for convenience to our users, we would like to include some extensions by default. If they need to be approved by the user that is not a problem. The extensions are usually downloaded as .xpi and installed from the browser's add-ons page.

But where and how to include those extensions is confounding. After installing an extension and searching where the extension lands we find the .xpi intact at C:\Users\xxxx\Appdata\Roaming\xxxx

A web search for "include xpi in firefox installation" recommends that all we need to do is add the .xpi file to the "extensions" folder and the user might be prompted to approve its installation/use. But we tried that. Restarting the browser made no difference. Even tried unzipping the .xpi file to provide its files in its own folder in the "extensions" folder.

Our installer can place the .xpi's anywhere but we would prefer it to be within the browser's program folder.

What are our options?
