For synchronous filtering switch over to use the same fns as async
Previously we created separate functions for asynch filtering,
we've now switched the synchronous operations to use the same functions.
Consquently now uneeded fns have been removed.
Also provide a rudimentary sorting in the event that we cannot
use sql to perform the sorting for us.
