tests: extend exponents string tests to GNU libc platforms
Enable some checks for string representations on Linux and macOS also
on GNU libc: it is the C library that does the actual string
transformation, so these additional checks can be extended on any
platform that uses GNU libc (already sort of implied by the Linux
enablement).
