Merge branch 'ab/unused-annotation'
Undoes 'jk/unused-annotation' topic and redoes it to work around

* ab/unused-annotation:
git-compat-util.h: use "deprecated" for UNUSED variables
git-compat-util.h: use "UNUSED", not "UNUSED(var)"
