2025-09-16color: use git_colorbool enum type to store colorboolsJeff King1-1/+1
We traditionally used "int" to store and pass around the values defined by "enum git_colorbool" (which were originally just #define macros). Using an int doesn't produce incorrect results, but using the actual enum makes the intent of the code more clear. It would be nice if the compiler could catch cases where we used the enum and an int interchangeably, since it's very easy to accidentally check the boolean true/false of a colorbool like: if (branch_use_color) This is wrong because GIT_COLOR_UNKNOWN and GIT_COLOR_AUTO evaluate to true in C, even though we may ultimately decide not to use color. But C is pretty happy to convert between ints and enums (even with various -Wenum-* warnings). So this sadly doesn't protect us from such mistakes, but it hopefully does make the code easier to read. 2025-09-16color: use GIT_COLOR_* instead of numeric constantsJeff King1-1/+1
Long ago Git's decision to show color for a subsytem was stored in a tri-state variable: it could be true (1), false (0), or unknown (-1). But since daa0c3d971 (color: delay auto-color decision until point of use, 2011-08-17) we want to carry around a new state, "auto", which bases the decision on the tty-ness of stdout (rather than collapsing that "auto" state to a true/false immediately). That commit introduced a set of GIT_COLOR_* defines to represent each state: UNKNOWN, ALWAYS, NEVER, and AUTO. But it only used the AUTO value, and left alone code using bare 0/1/-1 values. And of course since then we've grown many new spots that use those bare values. Let's switch all of these to use the named constants. That should make the code a bit easier to read, as it is more obvious that we're representing a color decision. 2025-07-23config: drop `git_config()` wrapperPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
In 036876a1067 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global repository variable explicit at the callsite. Follow through with that intent and remove `git_config()`. All callsites are adjusted so that they use `repo_config(the_repository, ...)` instead. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. We have a bunch of loops which iterate up to an unsigned boundary using a signed index, which generates warnigs because we compare a signed and unsigned value in the loop condition. Address these sites for trivial cases and enable `-Wsign-compare` warnings for these code units. This patch only adapts those code units where we can drop the `DISABLE_SIGN_COMPARE_WARNINGS` macro in the same step. 2024-09-25send-pack: free cas options before exitJeff King1-0/+1
The send-pack --force-with-lease option populates a push_cas_option struct with allocated strings. Exiting without cleaning this up will cause leak-checkers to complain. We can fix this by calling clear_cas_option(), after making it publicly available. Previously it was used only for resetting the list when we saw --no-force-with-lease. The git-push command has the same "leak", though in this case it won't trigger a leak-checker since it stores the push_cas_option struct as a global rather than on the stack (and is thus reachable even after main() exits). I've added cleanup for it here anyway, though, as future-proofing. The leak is triggered by t5541 (it tests --force-with-lease over http, which requires a separate send-pack process under the hood), but we can't mark it as leak-free yet. 2024-09-05builtin/push: fix leaking refspec query resultPatrick Steinhardt1-3/+5
When appending a refspec via `refspec_append_mapped()` we leak the result of `query_refspecs()`. The overall logic around refspec queries is quite weird, as callers are expected to either set the `src` or `dst` pointers, and then the (allocated) result will be in the respective other struct member. As we have the `src` member set, plugging the memory leak is thus as easy as just freeing the `dst` member. While at it, use designated initializers to initialize the structure. 2024-07-12builtin/push: call set_refspecs after validating remoteKarthik Nayak1-14/+7
When an end-user runs "git push" with an empty string for the remote repository name, e.g. $ git push '' main "git push" fails with a BUG(). Even though this is a nonsense request that we want to fail, we shouldn't hit a BUG(). Instead we want to give a sensible error message, e.g., 'bad repository'". This is because since 9badf97c42 (remote: allow resetting url list, 2024-06-14), we reset the remote URL if the provided URL is empty. When a user of 'remotes_remote_get' tries to fetch a remote with an empty repo name, the function initializes the remote via 'make_remote'. But the remote is still not a valid remote, since the URL is empty, so it tries to add the URL alias using 'add_url_alias'. This in-turn will call 'add_url', but since the URL is empty we call 'strvec_clear' on the `remote->url`. Back in 'remotes_remote_get', we again check if the remote is valid, which fails, so we return 'NULL' for the 'struct remote *' value. The 'builtin/push.c' code, calls 'set_refspecs' before validating the remote. This worked with empty repo names earlier since we would get a remote, albeit with an empty URL. With the new changes, we get a 'NULL' remote value, this causes the check for remote to fail and raises the BUG in 'set_refspecs'. Do a simple fix by doing remote validation first. Also add a test to validate the bug fix. With this, we can also now directly pass remote to 'set_refspecs' instead of it trying to lazily obtain it. 2024-06-14remote: simplify url/pushurl selectionJeff King1-16/+5
When we want to know the push urls for a remote, there is some simple logic: - if the user configured any remote.*.pushurl keys, then those make the complete set of push urls - otherwise we push to all urls in remote.*.url Many spots implement this with a level of indirection, assigning to a local url/url_nr pair. But since both arrays are now strvecs, we can just use a pointer to select the appropriate strvec, shortening the code a bit. Even though this is now a one-liner, since it is application logic that is present in so many places, it's worth abstracting a helper function. In fact, we already have such a function, but it's local to builtin/push.c. So we'll just make it available everywhere via remote.h. There are two spots to pay special attention to here: 1. in builtin/remote.c's get_url(), we are selecting first based on push_mode and then falling back to "url" when we're in push_mode but no pushurl is defined. The updated code makes that much more clear, compared to the original which had an "else" fall-through. 2. likewise in that file's set_url(), we _only_ respect push_mode, sine the point is that we are adding to pushurl in that case (whether it is empty or not). Now that the url/pushurl fields of "struct remote" own their strings, we can switch from bare arrays to strvecs. This has a few advantages: - push/clear are now one-liners - likewise the free+assigns in alias_all_urls() can use strvec_replace() - we now use size_t for storage, avoiding possible overflow - this will enable some further cleanups in future patches There's quite a bit of fallout in the code that reads these fields, as it tends to access these arrays directly. But it's mostly a mechanical replacement of "url_nr" with "url.nr", and "url[i]" with "url.v[i]", with a few variations (e.g. "*url" could become "*url.v", but I used "url.v[0]" for consistency). When the "--force-with-lease" option was introduced in 28f5d176 (remote.c: add command line option parser for "--force-with-lease", 2013-07-08), the design discussion revolved around the concept of "compare-and-swap", and it can still be seen in the name used for variables and helper functions. The end-user facing option name ended up to be a bit different, so during the development iteration of the feature, we used this C preprocessor macro to make it easier to rename it later. All of that happened more than 10 years ago, and the flexibility afforded by the CAS_OPT_NAME macro outlived its usefulness. 2023-12-09push: drop confusing configset/callback redundancyJeff King1-18/+13
We parse push config by calling git_config() with our git_push_config() callback. But inside that callback, when we see "push.gpgsign", we ignore the value passed into the callback and instead make a new call to git_config_get_value(). This is unnecessary at best, and slightly wrong at worst (if there are multiple instances, get_value() only returns one; both methods end up with last-one-wins, but we'd fail to report errors if earlier incarnations were bogus). The call was added by 68c757f219 (push: add a config option push.gpgSign for default signed pushes, 2015-08-19). That commit doesn't give any reason to deviate from the usual strategy here; it was probably just somebody unfamiliar with our config API and its conventions. It also added identical code to builtin/send-pack.c, which also handles push.gpgsign. And then the same issue spread to its neighbor in b33a15b081 (push: add recurseSubmodules config option, 2015-11-17), presumably via cargo-culting. This patch fixes all three to just directly use the value provided to the callback. While I was adjusting the code to do so, I noticed that push.gpgsign is overly careful about a NULL value. After git_parse_maybe_bool() has returned anything besides 1, we know that the value cannot be NULL (if it were, it would be an implicit "true", and many callers of maybe_bool rely on that). In a narrow but common case, the user is the only author of a branch and doesn't mind overwriting the corresponding branch on the remote. This workflow is especially common on GitHub, GitLab, and Gerrit, which keep a permanent record of every version of a branch that is pushed while a pull request is open for that branch. On those platforms, force-pushing is encouraged and is analogous to emailing a new version of a patchset. When giving advice about divergent branches, tell the user about `git pull`, but don't unconditionally instruct the user to do it. A less prescriptive message will help prevent users from thinking that they are required to create an integrated history instead of simply replacing the previous history. Also, don't put `git pull` in an awkward parenthetical, because `git pull` can always be used to reconcile branches and is the normal way to do so. Due to the difficulty of knowing which command for force-pushing is best suited to the user's situation, no specific advice is given about force-pushing. Instead, the user is directed to the Git documentation to read about possible ways forward that do not involve integration. Add a new "const struct config_context *ctx" arg to config_fn_t to hold additional information about the config iteration operation. config_context has a "struct key_value_info kvi" member that holds metadata about the config source being read (e.g. what kind of config source it is, the filename, etc). In this series, we're only interested in .kvi, so we could have just used "struct key_value_info" as an arg, but config_context makes it possible to add/adjust members in the future without changing the config_fn_t signature. We could also consider other ways of organizing the args (e.g. moving the config name and value into config_context or key_value_info), but in my experiments, the incremental benefit doesn't justify the added complexity (e.g. a config_fn_t will sometimes invoke another config_fn_t but with a different config value). In subsequent commits, the .kvi member will replace the global "struct config_reader" in config.c, making config iteration a global-free operation. It requires much more work for the machinery to provide meaningful values of .kvi, so for now, merely change the signature and call sites, pass NULL as a placeholder value, and don't rely on the arg in any meaningful way. Most of the changes are performed by contrib/coccinelle/config_fn_ctx.pending.cocci, which, for every config_fn_t: - Modifies the signature to accept "const struct config_context *ctx" - Passes "ctx" to any inner config_fn_t, if needed - Adds UNUSED attributes to "ctx", if needed Most config_fn_t instances are easily identified by seeing if they are called by the various config functions. Most of the remaining ones are manually named in the .cocci patch. Manual cleanups are still needed, but the majority of it is trivial; it's either adjusting config_fn_t that the .cocci patch didn't catch, or adding forward declarations of "struct config_context ctx" to make the signatures make sense. The non-trivial changes are in cases where we are invoking a config_fn_t outside of config machinery, and we now need to decide what value of "ctx" to pass. These cases are: - trace2/tr2_cfg.c:tr2_cfg_set_fl() This is indirectly called by git_config_set() so that the trace2 machinery can notice the new config values and update its settings using the tr2 config parsing function, i.e. tr2_cfg_cb(). - builtin/checkout.c:checkout_main() This calls git_xmerge_config() as a shorthand for parsing a CLI arg. This might be worth refactoring away in the future, since git_xmerge_config() can call git_default_config(), which can do much more than just parsing. Handle them by creating a KVI_INIT macro that initializes "struct key_value_info" to a reasonable default, and use that to construct the "ctx" arg. Note that compat/fsmonitor/fsm-path-utils-darwin.c previously got away with violating the rule that all files must start with an include of git-compat-util.h (or a short-list of alternate headers that happen to include it first). This change exposed the violation and caused it to stop building correctly; fix it by having it include git-compat-util.h first, as per policy. The '--all' option of git-push built-in cmd support to push all branches (refs under refs/heads) to remote. Under the usage, a user can easlily work in some scenarios, for example, branches synchronization and batch upload. The '--all' was introduced for a long time, meanwhile, git supports to customize the storage location under "refs/". when a new git user see the usage like, 'git push origin --all', we might feel like we're pushing _all_ the refs instead of just branches without looking at the documents until we found the related description of it or '--mirror'. To ensure compatibility, we cannot rename '--all' to another name directly, one way is, we can try to add a new option '--heads' which be identical with the functionality of '--all' to let the user understand the meaning of representation more clearly. Actually, We've more or less named options this way already, for example, in 'git-show-ref' and 'git ls-remote'. At the same time, we fix a related issue about the wrong help information of '--all' option in code and add some test cases in t5523, t5543 and t5583. hash.h depends upon and includes repository.h, due to the definition and use of the_hash_algo (defined as the_repository->hash_algo). However, most headers trying to include hash.h are only interested in the layout of the structs like object_id. Move the parts of hash.h that do not depend upon repository.h into a new file hash-ll.h (the "low level" parts of hash.h), and adjust other files to use this new header where the convenience inline functions aren't needed. This allows hash.h and object.h to be fairly small, minimal headers. It also exposes a lot of hidden dependencies on both path.h (which was brought in by repository.h) and repository.h (which was previously implicitly brought in by object.h), so also adjust other files to be more explicit about what they depend upon. This hopefully would make it more future-proof as we do not have to think and decide whether we should call git_gpg_config() in the git_config() callback for each command. A few git_config() callback functions that used to be custom callbacks are now just a thin wrapper around git_default_config(). We could further remove, git_FOO_config and replace calls to git_config(git_FOO_config) with git_config(git_default_config), but to make it clear which ones are affected and the effect is only the removal of git_gpg_config(), it is vastly preferred not to do such a change in this step (they can be done on top once the dust settled). The set_refspecs() caller of refspec_append_mapped() (added in [1]) left open the question[2] of whether the "remote" we lazily fetch might be NULL in the "[...]uniquely name our ref?" case, as remote_get() can return NULL. If we got past the "[...]uniquely name our ref?" case we'd have already segfaulted if we tried to dereference it as "remote->push.nr". In these cases the config mechanism & previous remote validation will have bailed out earlier. Git learned pushing submodules without pushing the superproject by the user specifying --recurse-submodules=only through 6c656c3fe4 ("submodules: add RECURSE_SUBMODULES_ONLY value", 2016-12-20) and 225e8bf778 ("push: add option to push only submodules", 2016-12-20). For users who use this feature regularly, it is desirable to have an equivalent configuration. It turns out that such a configuration (push.recurseSubmodules=only) is already supported, even though it is neither documented nor mentioned in the commit messages, due to the way the --recurse-submodules=only feature was implemented (a function used to parse --recurse-submodules was updated to support "only", but that same function is used to parse push.recurseSubmodules too). What is left is to document it and test it, which is what this commit does. There is a possible point of confusion when recursing into a submodule that itself has the push.recurseSubmodules=only configuration, because if a repository has only its submodules pushed and not itself, its superproject can never be pushed. 2022-04-29push: new config option "push.autoSetupRemote" supports "simple" pushTao Klerks1-8/+36
In some "simple" centralized workflows, users expect remote tracking branch names to match local branch names. "git push" pushes to the remote version/instance of the branch, and "git pull" pulls any changes to the remote branch (changes made by the same user in another place, or by other users). This expectation is supported by the push.default default option "simple" which refuses a default push for a mismatching tracking branch name, and by the new branch.autosetupmerge option, "simple", which only sets up remote tracking for same-name remote branches. When a new branch has been created by the user and has not yet been pushed (and push.default is not set to "current"), the user is prompted with a "The current branch %s has no upstream branch" error, and instructions on how to push and add tracking. This error is helpful in that following the advice once per branch "resolves" the issue for that branch forever, but inconvenient in that for the "simple" centralized workflow, this is always the right thing to do, so it would be better to just do it. Support this workflow with a new config setting, push.autoSetupRemote, which will cause a default push, when there is no remote tracking branch configured, to push to the same-name on the remote and --set-upstream. Also add a hint offering this new option when the "The current branch %s has no upstream branch" error is encountered, and add corresponding tests. 2022-04-29branch: new autosetupmerge option 'simple' for matching branchesTao Klerks1-5/+15
With the default push.default option, "simple", beginners are protected from accidentally pushing to the "wrong" branch in centralized workflows: if the remote tracking branch they would push to does not have the same name as the local branch, and they try to do a "default push", they get an error and explanation with options. There is a particular centralized workflow where this often happens: a user branches to a new local topic branch from an existing remote branch, eg with "checkout -b feature1 origin/master". With the default branch.autosetupmerge configuration (value "true"), git will automatically add origin/master as the upstream tracking branch. When the user pushes with a default "git push", with the intention of pushing their (new) topic branch to the remote, they get an error, and (amongst other things) a suggestion to run "git push origin HEAD". If they follow this suggestion the push succeeds, but on subsequent default pushes they continue to get an error - so eventually they figure out to add "-u" to change the tracking branch, or they spelunk the push.default config doc as proposed and set it to "current", or some GUI tooling does one or the other of these things for them. When one of their coworkers later works on the same topic branch, they don't get any of that "weirdness". They just "git checkout feature1" and everything works exactly as they expect, with the shared remote branch set up as remote tracking branch, and push and pull working out of the box. The "stable state" for this way of working is that local branches have the same-name remote tracking branch (origin/feature1 in this example), and multiple people can work on that remote feature branch at the same time, trusting "git pull" to merge or rebase as required for them to be able to push their interim changes to that same feature branch on that same remote. (merging from the upstream "master" branch, and merging back to it, are separate more involved processes in this flow). There is a problem in this flow/way of working, however, which is that the first user, when they first branched from origin/master, ended up with the "wrong" remote tracking branch (different from the stable state). For a while, before they pushed (and maybe longer, if they don't use -u/--set-upstream), their "git pull" wasn't getting other users' changes to the feature branch - it was getting any changes from the remote "master" branch instead (a completely different class of changes!) An experienced git user might say "well yeah, that's what it means to have the remote tracking branch set to origin/master!" - but the original user above didn't *ask* to have the remote master branch added as remote tracking branch - that just happened automatically when they branched their feature branch. They didn't necessarily even notice or understand the meaning of the "set up to track 'origin/master'" message when they created the branch - especially if they are using a GUI. Looking at how to fix this, you might think "OK, so disable auto setup of remote tracking - set branch.autosetupmerge to false" - but that will inconvenience the *second* user in this story - the one who just wanted to start working on the topic branch. The first and second users swap roles at different points in time of course - they should both have a sane configuration that does the right thing in both situations. Make this "branches have the same name locally as on the remote" workflow less painful / more obvious by introducing a new branch.autosetupmerge option called "simple", to match the same-name "push.default" option that makes similar assumptions. This new option automatically sets up tracking in a *subset* of the current default situations: when the original ref is a remote tracking branch *and* has the same branch name on the remote (as the new local branch name). Update the error displayed when the 'push.default=simple' configuration rejects a mismatching-upstream-name default push, to offer this new branch.autosetupmerge option that will prevent this class of error. With this new configuration, in the example situation above, the first user does *not* get origin/master set up as the tracking branch for the new local branch. If they "git pull" in their new local-only branch, they get an error explaining there is no upstream branch - which makes sense and is helpful. If they "git push", they get an error explaining how to push *and* suggesting they specify --set-upstream - which is exactly the right thing to do for them. This new option is likely not appropriate for users intentionally implementing a "triangular workflow" with a shared upstream tracking branch, that they "git pull" in and a "private" feature branch that they push/force-push to just for remote safe-keeping until they are ready to push up to the shared branch explicitly/separately. Such users are likely to prefer keeping the current default merge.autosetupmerge=true behavior, and change their push.default to "current". Also extend the existing branch tests with three new cases testing this option - the obvious matching-name and non-matching-name cases, and also a non-matching-ref-type case. The matching-name case needs to temporarily create an independent repo to fetch from, as the general strategy of using the local repo as the remote in these tests precludes locally branching with the same name as in the "remote". Blindly rewriting "--delete <ref>" to ":<ref>" means that an empty string <ref> results in refspec ":", which is the syntax to ask for "matching" push that does not delete anything. Worse yet, if there were matching refs that can be fast-forwarded, they would have been published prematurely, even if the user feels that they are not ready yet to be pushed out, which would be a real disaster. map_refspec() either returns the passed in ref string or a detached strbuf. This makes it hard for callers to release the possibly allocated memory, and set_refspecs() consequently leaks it. Let map_refspec() append any refspecs directly and release its own strbufs after use. Rename it to refspec_append_mapped() and don't return anything to reflect its increased responsibility. set_refspecs() also leaks its strbufs. Do the same here and directly call refspec_append() in each if branch instead of holding onto a detached strbuf, then dispose of the allocated memory after use. We need to add an else branch for the final call because all the other conditional branches already add their formatted refspec now. setup_push_upstream() and setup_push_current() forgot to release their strbufs as well; plug these leaks, too, while at it. None of these leaks were likely to impact users, because the number and sizes of refspecs are usually small and the allocations are only done once per program run. In the codebase, there are many options which use OPTION_CALLBACK in a plain ol' struct definition. However, we have the OPT_CALLBACK and OPT_CALLBACK_F macros which are meant to abstract these plain struct definitions away. These macros are useful as they semantically signal to developers that these are just normal callback option with nothing fancy happening. Replace plain struct definitions of OPTION_CALLBACK with OPT_CALLBACK or OPT_CALLBACK_F where applicable. The option help text for the force-with-lease option to "git push" reads like this: $ git push -h 2>&1 | grep -e force-with-lease --force-with-lease[=<refname>:<expect>] which comes from having N_("refname>:<expect") as the argument help text in the source code, with an aparent lack of "<" and ">" at both ends. It turns out that parse-options machinery takes the whole string and encloses it inside a pair of "<>", to make it easier for majority cases that uses a single token placeholder. The help string was written in a funnily unbalanced way knowing that the end result would balance out, by somebody who forgot the presence of PARSE_OPT_LITERAL_ARGHELP, which is the escape hatch mechanism designed to help such a case. We just should use the official escape hatch instead. Because ":<expect>" part can be omitted to ask Git to guess, it may be more correct to spell it as "<refname>[:<expect>]", but that is not the focus of this topic. An example is if I push something to a remote repository and then a colleague attempts to push to the same remote repository and the push fails because it requires them to pull first, but they don't notice because a success and failure both return a block of white text. They then continue about their business, thinking it has been successfully pushed. This patch colorizes the errors and hints (in red and yellow, respectively) so whenever there is a failure when pushing to a remote repository that fails, it is more noticeable. In this scenario, a developer could make a change which spans multiple submodules and then push their commits for code review. Upon completion of the code review, their commits can be accepted and applied to their respective submodules while the code review tool can then automatically update the superproject to the most recent SHA1 of each submodule. This would reduce the merge conflicts in the superproject that could occur if multiple people are contributing to the same submodule. When the user does the lazy "git push" with no parameters with push.default set to either "upstream", "simple" or "current", we internally generated a refspec that has the current branch name on the source side and used it to push. However, the branch name (say "test") may be an ambiguous refname in the context of the source repository---there may be a tag with the same name, for example. This would trigger an unnecessary error without any fault on the end-user's side. Be explicit and give a full refname as the source side to avoid the ambiguity. The destination side when pushing with the "current" sent only the name of the branch and forcing the receiving end to guess, which is the same issue. Be explicit there as well. The warning was important before the 2.0 transition, and remained important for a while after, so that new users get push.default explicitly in their configuration and do not experience inconsistent behavior if they ever used an older version of Git. The warning has been there since version 1.8.0 (Oct 2012), hence we can expect the vast majority of current Git users to have been exposed to it, and most of them have already set push.default explicitly. The switch from 'matching' to 'simple' was planned for 2.0 (May 2014), but actually happened only for 2.3 (Feb 2015). Today, the warning is mostly seen by beginners, who have not set their push.default configuration (yet). For many of them, the warning is confusing because it talks about concepts that they have not learned and asks them a choice that they are not able to make yet. See for example http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13148066/warning-push-default-is-unset-its-implicit-value-is-changing-in-git-2-0 (1260 votes for the question, 1824 for the answer as of writing) Remove the warning completely to avoid disturbing beginners. People who still occasionally use an older version of Git will be exposed to the warning through this old version. Eventually, versions of Git without the warning will be deployed enough and tutorials will not need to advise setting push.default anymore. Having slightly-differing versions of the flags variable available to those functions would probably cause more confusion than it is worth. The plan for the push.default transition had all along been to use the "simple" method rather than "upstream" as a default if the user did not specify their own push.default value. Commit 11037ee (push: switch default from "matching" to "simple", 2013-01-04) tried to implement that by moving PUSH_DEFAULT_UNSPECIFIED in our switch statement to fall-through to the PUSH_DEFAULT_SIMPLE case. When the commit that became 11037ee was originally written, that would have been enough. We would fall through to calling setup_push_upstream() with the "simple" parameter set to 1. However, it was delayed for a while until we were ready to make the transition in Git 2.0. And in the meantime, commit ed2b182 (push: change `simple` to accommodate triangular workflows, 2013-06-19) threw a monkey wrench into the works. That commit drops the "simple" parameter to setup_push_upstream, and instead checks whether the global "push_default" is PUSH_DEFAULT_SIMPLE. This is right when the user has explicitly configured push.default to simple, but wrong when we are a fall-through for the "unspecified" case. We never noticed because our push.default tests do not cover the case of the variable being totally unset; they only check the "simple" behavior itself. While signed tags and commits assert that the objects thusly signed came from you, who signed these objects, there is not a good way to assert that you wanted to have a particular object at the tip of a particular branch. My signing v2.0.1 tag only means I want to call the version v2.0.1, and it does not mean I want to push it out to my 'master' branch---it is likely that I only want it in 'maint', so the signature on the object alone is insufficient. The only assurance to you that 'maint' points at what I wanted to place there comes from your trust on the hosting site and my authentication with it, which cannot easily audited later. Introduce a mechanism that allows you to sign a "push certificate" (for the lack of better name) every time you push, asserting that what object you are pushing to update which ref that used to point at what other object. Think of it as a cryptographic protection for ref updates, similar to signed tags/commits but working on an orthogonal axis. The basic flow based on this mechanism goes like this: 1. You push out your work with "git push --signed". 2. The sending side learns where the remote refs are as usual, together with what protocol extension the receiving end supports. If the receiving end does not advertise the protocol extension "push-cert", an attempt to "git push --signed" fails. Otherwise, a text file, that looks like the following, is prepared in core: certificate version 0.1 pusher Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com> 1315427886 -0700 7339ca65... 21580ecb... refs/heads/master 3793ac56... 12850bec... refs/heads/next The file begins with a few header lines, which may grow as we gain more experience. The 'pusher' header records the name of the signer (the value of user.signingkey configuration variable, falling back to GIT_COMMITTER_{NAME|EMAIL}) and the time of the certificate generation. After the header, a blank line follows, followed by a copy of the protocol message lines. Each line shows the old and the new object name at the tip of the ref this push tries to update, in the way identical to how the underlying "git push" protocol exchange tells the ref updates to the receiving end (by recording the "old" object name, the push certificate also protects against replaying). It is expected that new command packet types other than the old-new-refname kind will be included in push certificate in the same way as would appear in the plain vanilla command packets in unsigned pushes. The user then is asked to sign this push certificate using GPG, formatted in a way similar to how signed tag objects are signed, and the result is sent to the other side (i.e. receive-pack). In the protocol exchange, this step comes immediately before the sender tells what the result of the push should be, which in turn comes before it sends the pack data. 3. When the receiving end sees a push certificate, the certificate is written out as a blob. The pre-receive hook can learn about the certificate by checking GIT_PUSH_CERT environment variable, which, if present, tells the object name of this blob, and make the decision to allow or reject this push. Additionally, the post-receive hook can also look at the certificate, which may be a good place to log all the received certificates for later audits. Because a push certificate carry the same information as the usual command packets in the protocol exchange, we can omit the latter when a push certificate is in use and reduce the protocol overhead. This however is not included in this patch to make it easier to review (in other words, the series at this step should never be released without the remainder of the series, as it implements an interim protocol that will be incompatible with the final one). The skip_prefix() function returns a pointer to the content past the prefix, or NULL if the prefix was not found. While this is nice and simple, in practice it makes it hard to use for two reasons: 1. When you want to conditionally skip or keep the string as-is, you have to introduce a temporary variable. For example: tmp = skip_prefix(buf, "foo"); if (tmp) buf = tmp; 2. It is verbose to check the outcome in a conditional, as you need extra parentheses to silence compiler warnings. For example: if ((cp = skip_prefix(buf, "foo")) /* do something with cp */ Both of these make it harder to use for long if-chains, and we tend to use starts_with() instead. However, the first line of "do something" is often to then skip forward in buf past the prefix, either using a magic constant or with an extra strlen(3) (which is generally computed at compile time, but means we are repeating ourselves). This patch refactors skip_prefix() to return a simple boolean, and to provide the pointer value as an out-parameter. If the prefix is not found, the out-parameter is untouched. Since f2690487 (fetch: opportunistically update tracking refs, 2013-05-11), we stopped taking a non-storing refspec given on the command line of "git fetch" literally, and instead started mapping it via remote.$name.fetch refspecs. This allows $ git fetch origin master from the 'origin' repository, which is configured with [remote "origin"] fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/* to update refs/remotes/origin/master with the result, as if the command line were $ git fetch origin +master:refs/remotes/origin/master to reduce surprises and improve usability. Before that change, a refspec on the command line without a colon was only to fetch the history and leave the result in FETCH_HEAD, without updating the remote-tracking branches. When you are simulating a fetch from you by your mothership with a push by you into your mothership, instead of having: [remote "satellite"] fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/satellite/* on the mothership repository and running: mothership$ git fetch satellite you would have: [remote "mothership"] push = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/satellite/* on your satellite machine, and run: satellite$ git push mothership Because we so far did not make the corresponding change to the push side, this command: satellite$ git push mothership master does _not_ allow you on the satellite to only push 'master' out but still to the usual destination (i.e. refs/remotes/satellite/master). Implement the logic to map an unqualified refspec given on the command line via the remote.$name.push refspec. This will bring a bit more symmetry between "fetch" and "push". - From the beginning of push.c in 755225d, 2006-04-29, "thin" option was enabled by default but could be turned off with --no-thin. - Then Shawn changed the default to 0 in favor of saving server resources in a4503a1, 2007-09-09. --no-thin worked great. - One day later, in 9b28851 Daniel extracted some code from push.c to create transport.c. He (probably accidentally) flipped the default value from 0 to 1 in transport_get(). From then on --no-thin is effectively no-op because git-push still expects the default value to be false and only calls transport_set_option() when "thin" variable in push.c is true (which is unnecessary). Correct the code to respect --no-thin by calling transport_set_option() in both cases. receive-pack learns about --reject-thin-pack-for-testing option, which only is for testing purposes, hence no document update. As stated in the documentation, the use of remote-tracking branch as the default is a tentative one, and we may come up with a better logic as we gain experience. The intended sematics is: * "--force-with-lease" alone, without specifying the details, will protect _all_ remote refs that are going to be updated by requiring their current value to be the same as some reasonable default, unless otherwise specified; * "--force-with-lease=refname", without specifying the expected value, will protect that refname, if it is going to be updated, by requiring its current value to be the same as some reasonable default. * "--force-with-lease=refname:value" will protect that refname, if it is going to be updated, by requiring its current value to be the same as the specified value; and * "--no-force-with-lease" will cancel all the previous --force-with-lease on the command line. For now, "some reasonable default" is tentatively defined as "the value of the remote-tracking branch we have for the ref of the remote being updated", and it is an error if we do not have such a remote-tracking branch. But this is known to be fragile, its use is not yet recommended, and hopefully we will find more reasonable default as we gain experience with this feature. The manual marks the feature as experimental unless the expected value is specified explicitly for this reason. Because the command line options are parsed _before_ we know which remote we are pushing to, there needs further processing to the parsed data after we instantiate the transport object to: * expand "refname" given by the user to a full refname to be matched with the list of "struct ref" used in match_push_refs() and set_ref_status_for_push(); and * learning the actual local ref that is the remote-tracking branch for the specified remote ref. Further, some processing need to be deferred until we find the set of remote refs and match_push_refs() returns in order to find the ones that need to be checked after explicit ones have been processed for "--force-with-lease" (no specific details). These post-processing will be the topic of the next patch. This option was originally called "cas" (for "compare and swap"), the name which nobody liked because it was too technical. The second attempt called it "lockref" (because it is conceptually like pushing after taking a lock) but the word "lock" was hated because it implied that it may reject push by others, which is not the way this option works. This round calls it "force-with-lease". You assume you took the lease on the ref when you fetched to decide what the rebased history should be, and you can push back only if the lease has not been broken. The very name of "upstream" indicates that it is only suitable for use in central workflows; let us not even attempt to give it a new meaning in triangular workflows, and error out as before. This happens because the 'git checkout' on the second terminal races with the 'git push' on the first terminal. Although this patch does not solve the core problem (there is still no guarantee that 'git push' on the first terminal will resolve HEAD before 'git checkout' changes HEAD on the second), it works in practice. Currently, do_push() in push.c calls remote_get(), which gets the configured remote for fetching and pushing. Replace this call with a call to pushremote_get() instead, a new function that will return the remote configured specifically for pushing. This function tries to work with the string pushremote_name, before falling back to the codepath of remote_get(). This patch has no visible impact, but serves to enable future patches to introduce configuration variables to set pushremote_name. For example, you can now do the following in handle_config(): if (!strcmp(key, "remote.pushdefault")) git_config_string(&pushremote_name, key, value); Then, pushes will automatically go to the remote specified by remote.pushdefault. When we push to update an existing ref, if: * the object at the tip of the remote is not a commit; or * the object we are pushing is not a commit, it won't be correct to suggest to fetch, integrate and push again, as the old and new objects will not "merge". We should explain that the push must be forced when there is a non-committish object is involved in such a case. If we do not have the current object at the tip of the remote, we do not even know that object, when fetched, is something that can be merged. In such a case, suggesting to pull first just like non-fast-forward case may not be technically correct, but in practice, most such failures are seen when you try to push your work to a branch without knowing that somebody else already pushed to update the same branch since you forked, so "pull first" would work as a suggestion most of the time. And if the object at the tip is not a commit, "pull first" will fail, without making any permanent damage. As a side effect, it also makes the error message the user will get during the next "push" attempt easier to understand, now the user is aware that a non-commit object is involved. In these cases, the current code already rejects such a push on the client end, but we used the same error and advice messages as the ones used when rejecting a non-fast-forward push, i.e. pull from there and integrate before pushing again. When calling "git push" without argument, we want to allow Git to do something simple to explain and safe. push.default=matching is unsafe when used to push to shared repositories, and hard to explain to beginners in some contexts. It is debatable whether 'upstream' or 'current' is the safest or the easiest to explain, so introduce a new mode called 'simple' that is the intersection of them: push to the upstream branch, but only if it has the same name remotely. If not, give an error that suggests the right command to push explicitely to 'upstream' or 'current'. A question is whether to allow pushing when no upstream is configured. An argument in favor of allowing the push is that it makes the new mode work in more cases. On the other hand, refusing to push when no upstream is configured encourages the user to set the upstream, which will be beneficial on the next pull. Lacking better argument, we chose to deny the push, because it will be easier to change in the future if someone shows us wrong. The user can say "git push" without specifying any refspec. When using the "upstream" semantics via the push.default configuration, the user wants to update the "upstream" branch of the current branch, which is the branch at a remote repository the current branch is set to integrate with, with this command. However, there are cases that such a "git push" that uses the "upstream" semantics does not make sense: - The current branch does not have branch.$name.remote configured. By definition, "git push" that does not name where to push to will not know where to push to. The user may explicitly say "git push $there", but again, by definition, no branch at repository $there is set to integrate with the current branch in this case and we wouldn't know which remote branch to update. - The current branch does have branch.$name.remote configured, but it does not specify branch.$name.merge that names what branch at the remote this branch integrates with. "git push" knows where to push in this case (or the user may explicitly say "git push $remote" to tell us where to push), but we do not know which remote branch to update. - The current branch does have its remote and upstream branch configured, but the user said "git push $there", where $there is not the remote named by "branch.$name.remote". By definition, no branch at repository $there is set to integrate with the current branch in this case, and this push is not meant to update any branch at the remote repository $there. The first two cases were already checked correctly, but the third case was not checked and we ended up updating the branch named branch.$name.merge at repository $there, which was totally bogus. Pushing a non-fast-forward update to a remote repository will result in an error, but the hint text doesn't provide the correct resolution in every case. Give better resolution advice in three push scenarios: 1) If you push your current branch and it triggers a non-fast-forward error, you should merge remote changes with 'git pull' before pushing again. 2) If you push to a shared repository others push to, and your local tracking branches are not kept up to date, the 'matching refs' default will generate non-fast-forward errors on outdated branches. If this is your workflow, the 'matching refs' default is not for you. Consider setting the 'push.default' configuration variable to 'current' or 'upstream' to ensure only your current branch is pushed. 3) If you explicitly specify a ref that is not your current branch or push matching branches with ':', you will generate a non-fast-forward error if any pushed branch tip is out of date. You should checkout the offending branch and merge remote changes before pushing again. Teach transport.c to recognize these scenarios and configure push.c to hint for them. If 'git push's default behavior changes or we discover more scenarios, extension is easy. Standardize on the advice API and add three new advice variables, 'pushNonFFCurrent', 'pushNonFFDefault', and 'pushNonFFMatching'. Setting any of these to 'false' will disable their affiliated advice. Setting 'pushNonFastForward' to false will disable all three, thus preserving the config option for users who already set it, but guaranteeing new users won't disable push advice accidentally. When working with submodules it is easy to forget to push a submodule to the server but pushing a super-project that contains a commit for that submodule. The result is that the superproject points at a submodule commit that is not available on the server. This adds the option --recurse-submodules=check to push. When using this option git will check that all submodule commits that are about to be pushed are present on a remote of the submodule. To be able to use a combined diff, disabling a diff callback has been removed from combined-diff.c. This shows a trace of all packets coming in or out of a given program. This can help with debugging object negotiation or other protocol issues. To keep the code changes simple, we operate at the lowest level, meaning we don't necessarily understand what's in the packets. The one exception is a packet starting with "PACK", which causes us to skip that packet and turn off tracing (since the gigantic pack data will not be interesting to read, at least not in the trace format). We show both written and read packets. In the local case, this may mean you will see packets twice (written by the sender and read by the receiver). However, for cases where the other end is remote, this allows you to see the full conversation.
