In 036876a1067 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by
default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the
config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have
been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that
takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll
eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global
repository variable explicit at the callsite.
Follow through with that intent and remove
`git_config_set_in_file_gently()`. All callsites are adjusted so that
they use `repo_config_set_in_file_gently(the_repository, ...)` instead.
While some callsites might already have a repository available, this
mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and
thus cannot cause any regression. Those sites should eventually be
cleaned up in a later patch series.

The "--recursive" flag for git-grep(1) allows users to grep for a string
across submodule boundaries. To make this work we add each submodule's
object sources to our own object database so that the objects can be
accessed directly.
The infrastructure for this depends on a global string list of submodule
paths. The caller is expected to call `add_submodule_odb_by_path()` for
each source and the object database will then eventually register all
submodule sources via `do_oid_object_info_extended()` in case it isn't
able to look up a specific object.
This reliance on global state is of course suboptimal with regards to
our libification efforts.
Refactor the logic so that the list of submodule sources is instead
tracked in the object database itself. This allows us to lose the
condition of `r == the_repository` before registering submodule sources
as we only ever add submodule sources to `the_repository` anyway. As
such, behaviour before and after this refactoring should always be the
same.
Rename the functions accordingly.

In the preceding commits we have renamed the structures contained in
"object-store.h" to `struct object_database` and `struct odb_backend`.
As such, the code files "object-store.{c,h}" are confusingly named now.
Rename them to "odb.{c,h}" accordingly.

The `object_directory` structure is used as an access point for a single
object directory like ".git/objects". While the structure isn't yet
fully self-contained, the intent is for it to eventually contain all
information required to access objects in one specific location.
While the name "object directory" is a good fit for now, this will
change over time as we continue with the agenda to make pluggable object
databases a thing. Eventually, objects may not be accessed via any kind
of directory at all anymore, but they could instead be backed by any
kind of durable storage mechanism. While it seems quite far-fetched for
now, it is thinkable that eventually this might even be some form of a
database, for example.
As such, the current name of this structure will become worse over time
as we evolve into the direction of pluggable ODBs. Immediate next steps
will start to carve out proper self-contained object directories, which
requires us to pass in these object directories as parameters. Based on
our modern naming schema this means that those functions should then be
named after their subsystem, which means that we would start to bake the
current name into the codebase more and more.
Let's preempt this by renaming the structure. There have been a couple
alternatives that were discussed:
- `odb_backend` was discarded because it led to the association that
one object database has a single backend, but the model is that one
alternate has one backend. Furthermore, "backend" is more about the
actual backing implementation and less about the high-level concept.
- `odb_alternate` was discarded because it is a bit of a stretch to
also call the main object directory an "alternate".
Instead, pick `odb_source` as the new name. It makes it sufficiently
clear that there can be multiple sources and does not cause confusion
when mixed with the already-existing "alternate" terminology.
In the future, this change allows us to easily introduce for example a
`odb_files_source` and other format-specific implementations.

Both submodule--helper.c and submodule-config.c have an implementation
of starts_with_dot_slash and starts_with_dot_dot_slash. The dir.h header
has starts_with_dot(_dot)_slash_native, which sets PATH_MATCH_NATIVE.
Move the helpers to dir.h as static inlines. I thought about renaming
them to postfix with _platform but that felt too long and ugly. On the
other hand it might be slightly confusing with _native.
This simplifies a submodule refactor which wants to use the helpers
earlier in the submodule--helper.c file.

The "object-store-ll.h" header has been introduced to keep transitive
header dependendcies and compile times at bay. Now that we have created
a new "object-store.c" file though we can easily move the last remaining
additional bit of "object-store.h", the `odb_path_map`, out of the
header.
Do so. As the "object-store.h" header is now equivalent to its low-level
alternative we drop the latter and inline it into the former.

The `null_oid()` function returns the object ID that only consists of
zeroes. Naturally, this ID also depends on the hash algorithm used, as
the number of zeroes is different between SHA1 and SHA256. Consequently,
the function returns the hash-algorithm-specific null object ID.
This is currently done by depending on `the_hash_algo`, which implicitly
makes us depend on `the_repository`. Refactor the function to instead
pass in the hash algorithm for which we want to retrieve the null object
ID. Adapt callsites accordingly by passing in `the_repository`, thus
bubbling up the dependency on that global variable by one layer.
There are a couple of trivial exceptions for subsystems that already got
rid of `the_repository`. These subsystems instead use the repository
that is available via the calling context:
- "builtin/grep.c"
- "grep.c"
- "refs/debug.c"
There are also two non-trivial exceptions:
- "diff-no-index.c": Here we know that we may not have a repository
initialized at all, so we cannot rely on `the_repository`. Instead,
we adapt `diff_no_index()` to get a `struct git_hash_algo` as
parameter. The only caller is located in "builtin/diff.c", where we
know to call `repo_set_hash_algo()` in case we're running outside of
a Git repository. Consequently, it is fine to continue passing
`the_repository->hash_algo` even in this case.
- "builtin/ls-files.c": There is an in-flight patch series that drops
`USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` in this file, which causes a semantic
conflict because we use `null_oid()` in `show_submodule()`. The
value is passed to `repo_submodule_init()`, which may use the object
ID to resolve a tree-ish in the superproject from which we want to
read the submodule config. As such, the object ID should refer to an
object in the superproject, and consequently we need to use its hash
algorithm.
This means that we could in theory just not bother about this edge
case at all and just use `the_repository` in "diff-no-index.c". But
doing so would feel misdesigned.
Remove the `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` preprocessor define in
"hash.c".

The submodule entry list returned by `submodules_of_tree()` is never
completely free'd by its only caller. Introduce a new function that
free's the list for us and call it.
While at it, also fix the leaking `branch_point` string.

We traverse through submodules in the tree via `tree_entry()`, passing
to it a `struct name_entry` that it is supposed to populate with the
tree entry's contents. We unnecessarily allocate this variable instead
of passing a variable that is allocated on the stack, and the ultimately
don't even free that variable. This is unnecessary and leaks memory.
Convert the variable to instead be allocated on the stack to plug the
memory leak.

Use of the `the_repository` variable is deprecated nowadays, and we
slowly but steadily convert the codebase to not use it anymore. Instead,
callers should be passing down the repository to work on via parameters.
It is hard though to prove that a given code unit does not use this
variable anymore. The most trivial case, merely demonstrating that there
is no direct use of `the_repository`, is already a bit of a pain during
code reviews as the reviewer needs to manually verify claims made by the
patch author. The bigger problem though is that we have many interfaces
that implicitly rely on `the_repository`.
Introduce a new `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` macro that allows code
units to opt into usage of `the_repository`. The intent of this macro is
to demonstrate that a certain code unit does not use this variable
anymore, and to keep it from new dependencies on it in future changes,
be it explicit or implicit
For now, the macro only guards `the_repository` itself as well as
`the_hash_algo`. There are many more known interfaces where we have an
implicit dependency on `the_repository`, but those are not guarded at
the current point in time. Over time though, we should start to add
guards as required (or even better, just remove them).
Define the macro as required in our code units. As expected, most of our
code still relies on the global variable. Nearly all of our builtins
rely on the variable as there is no way yet to pass `the_repository` to
their entry point. For now, declare the macro in "biultin.h" to keep the
required changes at least a little bit more contained.

function that shall be used. Require callers to pass in the hash

In `free_one_config()` we never end up freeing the `url` and `ignore`
fields and thus leak memory. Fix those leaks and mark now-passing tests
as leak free.

Introduce the ability to append comments to modifications
made using git-config. Example usage:
git config --comment "changed via script" \
--add safe.directory /home/alice/repo.git
based on the proposed patch, the output produced is:
[safe]
directory = /home/alice/repo.git #changed via script
Users need to be able to distinguish between config entries made
using automation and entries made by a human. Automation can add
comments containing a URL pointing to explanations for the change
made, avoiding questions from users as to why their config file
was changed by a third party.
The implementation ensures that a # character is unconditionally
prepended to the provided comment string, and that the comment
text is appended as a suffix to the changed key-value-pair in the
same line of text. Multi-line comments (i.e. comments containing
linefeed) are rejected as errors, causing Git to exit without
making changes.
Comments are aimed at humans who inspect or change their Git
config using a pager or editor. Comments are not meant to be
read or displayed by git-config at a later time.

Update the validation of "curl URL" submodule URLs (i.e. those that specify
an "http[s]" or "ftp[s]" protocol) in 'check_submodule_url()' to catch more
invalid URLs. The existing validation using 'credential_from_url_gently()'
parses certain URLs incorrectly, leading to invalid submodule URLs passing
'git fsck' checks. Conversely, 'url_normalize()' - used to validate remote
URLs in 'remote_get()' - correctly identifies the invalid URLs missed by
'credential_from_url_gently()'.
To catch more invalid cases, replace 'credential_from_url_gently()' with
'url_normalize()' followed by a 'url_decode()' and a check for newlines
(mirroring 'check_url_component()' in the 'credential_from_url_gently()'
validation).

Move 'check_submodule_url' out of 'fsck.c' and into 'submodule-config.h' as
a public method, similar to 'check_submodule_name'. With the function now
accessible outside of 'fsck', it can be used in a later commit to extend
'test-tool submodule' to check the validity of submodule URLs as it does
with names in the 'check-name' subcommand.
Other than its location, no changes are made to 'check_submodule_url' in
this patch.

We record the submodule branch config value as a string, so config that
uses an implicit bool like:
[submodule "foo"]
branch
will cause us to segfault. Note that unlike most other config-parsing
bugs of this class, this can be triggered by parsing a bogus .gitmodules
file (which we might do after cloning a malicious repository).
I don't think the security implications are important, though. It's
always a strict NULL dereference, not an out-of-bounds read or write. So
we should reliably kill the process. That may be annoying, but the
impact is limited to the attacker preventing the victim from
successfully using "git clone --recurse-submodules", etc, on the
malicious repo.
The "branch" entry is the only one with this problem; other strings like
"path" and "url" already check for NULL.

alloc_nr, ALLOC_GROW, and ALLOC_GROW_BY are commonly used macros for
dynamic array allocation. Moving these macros to git-compat-util.h with
the other alloc macros focuses alloc.[ch] to allocation for Git objects
and additionally allows us to remove inclusions to alloc.h from files
that solely used the above macros.

Plumb "struct key_value_info" through all code paths that end in
die_bad_number(), which lets us remove the helper functions that read
analogous values from "struct config_reader". As a result, nothing reads
config_reader.config_kvi any more, so remove that too.
In config.c, this requires changing the signature of
git_configset_get_value() to 'return' "kvi" in an out parameter so that
git_configset_get_<type>() can pass it to git_config_<type>(). Only
numeric types will use "kvi", so for non-numeric types (e.g.
git_configset_get_string()), pass NULL to indicate that the out
parameter isn't needed.
Outside of config.c, config callbacks now need to pass "ctx->kvi" to any
of the git_config_<type>() functions that parse a config string into a
number type. Included is a .cocci patch to make that refactor.
The only exceptional case is builtin/config.c, where git_config_<type>()
is called outside of a config callback (namely, on user-provided input),
so config source information has never been available. In this case,
die_bad_number() defaults to a generic, but perfectly descriptive
message. Let's provide a safe, non-NULL for "kvi" anyway, but make sure
not to change the message.

Pass config_context to config_callbacks when parsing config files. To
provide the .kvi member, refactor out the configset logic that caches
"struct config_source" and "enum config_scope" as a "struct
key_value_info". Make the "enum config_scope" available to the config
file machinery by plumbing an additional arg through
git_config_from_file_with_options().
We do not exercise ctx yet because the remaining current_config_*()
callers may be used with config_with_options(), which may read config
from parameters, but parameters don't pass ctx yet.

Add a new "const struct config_context *ctx" arg to config_fn_t to hold
additional information about the config iteration operation.
config_context has a "struct key_value_info kvi" member that holds
metadata about the config source being read (e.g. what kind of config
source it is, the filename, etc). In this series, we're only interested
in .kvi, so we could have just used "struct key_value_info" as an arg,
but config_context makes it possible to add/adjust members in the future
without changing the config_fn_t signature. We could also consider other
ways of organizing the args (e.g. moving the config name and value into
config_context or key_value_info), but in my experiments, the
incremental benefit doesn't justify the added complexity (e.g. a
config_fn_t will sometimes invoke another config_fn_t but with a
different config value).
In subsequent commits, the .kvi member will replace the global "struct
config_reader" in config.c, making config iteration a global-free
operation. It requires much more work for the machinery to provide
meaningful values of .kvi, so for now, merely change the signature and
call sites, pass NULL as a placeholder value, and don't rely on the arg
in any meaningful way.
Most of the changes are performed by
contrib/coccinelle/config_fn_ctx.pending.cocci, which, for every
config_fn_t:
- Modifies the signature to accept "const struct config_context *ctx"
- Passes "ctx" to any inner config_fn_t, if needed
- Adds UNUSED attributes to "ctx", if needed
Most config_fn_t instances are easily identified by seeing if they are
called by the various config functions. Most of the remaining ones are
manually named in the .cocci patch. Manual cleanups are still needed,
but the majority of it is trivial; it's either adjusting config_fn_t
that the .cocci patch didn't catch, or adding forward declarations of
"struct config_context ctx" to make the signatures make sense.
The non-trivial changes are in cases where we are invoking a config_fn_t
outside of config machinery, and we now need to decide what value of
"ctx" to pass. These cases are:
- trace2/tr2_cfg.c:tr2_cfg_set_fl()
This is indirectly called by git_config_set() so that the trace2
machinery can notice the new config values and update its settings
using the tr2 config parsing function, i.e. tr2_cfg_cb().
- builtin/checkout.c:checkout_main()
This calls git_xmerge_config() as a shorthand for parsing a CLI arg.
This might be worth refactoring away in the future, since
git_xmerge_config() can call git_default_config(), which can do much
more than just parsing.
Handle them by creating a KVI_INIT macro that initializes "struct
key_value_info" to a reasonable default, and use that to construct the
"ctx" arg.

The vast majority of files including object-store.h did not need dir.h
nor khash.h. Split the header into two files, and let most just depend
upon object-store-ll.h, while letting the two callers that need it
depend on the full object-store.h.
After this patch:
$ git grep -h include..object-store | sort | uniq -c
2 #include "object-store.h"
129 #include "object-store-ll.h"
Diff best viewed with `--color-moved`.

Add a 'struct repository' argument to 'config_with_options()' and remove the
'repo' field from 'struct git_config_source'.
A 'struct repository' instance was originally added to the config source in
e3e8bf046e9 (submodule-config: pass repo upon blob config read, 2021-08-16)
to improve how submodule blob config content was accessed. At the time, this
was the only use for a 'repository' instance, so it was naturally added only
where it was needed: to 'struct git_config_source'. However, in upcoming
patches, 'config_with_options()' will need the repository instance to access
extension information (regardless of whether a 'config_source' exists). To
make the 'struct repository' instance more easily accessible, move it into
the function's arguments.
Update all callers of 'config_with_options()' to pass the appropriate 'repo'
value:
* in 'builtin/config.c', use 'the_repository'
* in 'submodule--config.c', use the 'repo' arg in 'config_from_gitmodules()'
* in 'read_[very_]early_config()' & 'read_protected_config()', set 'repo' to
NULL (repository instances aren't available there)
* in 'populate_remote_urls()', use the repo instance that has been added to
the 'struct config_include_data'
* in 'repo_read_config()', use the given 'repo' arg
Finally, note that this patch eliminates the fallback to 'the_repository'
that previously existed for the 'config_source' repo instance if it was
NULL. The fallback is no longer necessary, as the 'repo' is set explicitly
in all cases where it is needed.

Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly
including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files
could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include

When a "jobs = 0" is passed let's BUG() out rather than fall back on
online_cpus(). The default behavior was added when this API was
implemented in c553c72eed6 (run-command: add an asynchronous parallel
child processor, 2015-12-15).
Most of our code in-tree that scales up to "online_cpus()" by default
calls that function by itself. Keeping this default behavior just for
the sake of two callers means that we'd need to maintain this one spot
where we're second-guessing the config passed down into pp_init().
The preceding commit has an overview of the API callers that passed
"jobs = 0". There were only two of them (actually three, but they
resolved to these two config parsing codepaths).
The "fetch.parallel" caller already had a test for the
"fetch.parallel=0" case added in 0353c688189 (fetch: do not run a
redundant fetch from submodule, 2022-05-16), but there was no such
test for "submodule.fetchJobs". Let's add one here.

As reported in [1] the "UNUSED(var)" macro introduced in
2174b8c75de (Merge branch 'jk/unused-annotation' into next,
2022-08-24) breaks coccinelle's parsing of our sources in files where
it occurs.
Let's instead partially go with the approach suggested in [2] of
making this not take an argument. As noted in [1] "coccinelle" will
ignore such tokens in argument lists that it doesn't know about, and
it's less of a surprise to syntax highlighters.
This undoes the "help us notice when a parameter marked as unused is
actually use" part of 9b240347543 (git-compat-util: add UNUSED macro,
2022-08-19), a subsequent commit will further tweak the macro to
implement a replacement for that functionality.

Hashmap comparison functions must conform to a particular callback
interface, but many don't use all of their parameters. Especially the
void cmp_data pointer, but some do not use keydata either (because they
can easily form a full struct to pass when doing lookups). Let's mark
these to make -Wunused-parameter happy.

Some config variables are combinations of multiple words, and we
typically write them in camelCase forms in manpage and translatable
strings. It's not easy to find mismatches for these camelCase config
variables during code reviews, but occasionally they are identified
during localization translations.
To check for mismatched config variables, I introduced a new feature
in the helper program for localization[^1]. The following mismatched
config variables have been identified by running the helper program,
such as "git-po-helper check-pot".
Lowercase in manpage should use camelCase:

In 961b130d20c9 (branch: add --recurse-submodules option for branch
creation, 2022-01-28), a funny pattern was introduced where first some
struct is `xmalloc()`ed, then we resize an array whose element type is
the same struct, and then the first struct's contents are copied into
the last element of that array.
Crucially, the `xmalloc()`ed memory never gets released.
Let's avoid that memory leak and that memory allocation dance altogether
by first reallocating the array, then using a pointer to the last array
element to go forward.

Add a path_match_flags() function and have the two sets of
starts_with_dot_{,dot_}slash() functions added in
63e95beb085 (submodule: port resolve_relative_url from shell to C,
2016-04-15) and a2b26ffb1a8 (fsck: convert gitmodules url to URL
passed to curl, 2020-04-18) be thin wrappers for it.
As the latter of those notes the fsck version was copied from the
initial builtin/submodule--helper.c version.
Since the code added in a2b26ffb1a8 was doing really doing the same as
win32_is_dir_sep() added in 1cadad6f658 (git clone <url>
C:\cygwin\home\USER\repo' is working (again), 2018-12-15) let's move
the latter to git-compat-util.h is a is_xplatform_dir_sep(). We can
then call either it or the platform-specific is_dir_sep() from this
new function.
Let's likewise change code in various other places that was hardcoding
checks for "'/' || '\\'" with the new is_xplatform_dir_sep(). As can
be seen in those callers some of them still concern themselves with
':' (Mac OS classic?), but let's leave the question of whether that
should be consolidated for some other time.
As we expect to make wider use of the "native" case in the future,
define and use two starts_with_dot_{,dot_}slash_native() convenience
wrappers. This makes the diff in builtin/submodule--helper.c much
smaller.

To improve the submodules UX, we would like to teach Git to handle
branches in submodules. Start this process by teaching "git branch" the
--recurse-submodules option so that "git branch --recurse-submodules
topic" will create the `topic` branch in the superproject and its
submodules.
Although this commit does not introduce breaking changes, it does not
work well with existing --recurse-submodules commands because "git
branch --recurse-submodules" writes to the submodule ref store, but most
commands only consider the superproject gitlink and ignore the submodule
ref store. For example, "git checkout --recurse-submodules" will check
out the commits in the superproject gitlinks (and put the submodules in
detached HEAD) instead of checking out the submodule branches.
Because of this, this commit introduces a new configuration value,
`submodule.propagateBranches`. The plan is for Git commands to
prioritize submodule ref store information over superproject gitlinks if
this value is true. Because "git branch --recurse-submodules" writes to
submodule ref stores, for the sake of clarity, it will not function
unless this configuration value is set.
This commit also includes changes that support working with submodules
from a superproject commit because "branch --recurse-submodules" (and
future commands) need to read .gitmodules and gitlinks from the
superproject commit, but submodules are typically read from the
filesystem's .gitmodules and the index's gitlinks. These changes are:
* add a submodules_of_tree() helper that gives the relevant
information of an in-tree submodule (e.g. path and oid) and
initializes the repository
* add is_tree_submodule_active() by adding a treeish_name parameter to
is_submodule_active()
* add the "submoduleNotUpdated" advice to advise users to update the
submodules in their trees
Incidentally, fix an incorrect usage string that combined the 'list'
usage of git branch (-l) with the 'create' usage; this string has been
incorrect since its inception, a8dfd5eac4 (Make builtin-branch.c use
parse_options., 2007-10-07).

When reading the config of a submodule, if reading from a blob, read
using an explicitly specified repository instead of by adding the
submodule's ODB as an alternate and then reading an object from
the_repository.
This makes the "grep --recurse-submodules with submodules without
.gitmodules in the working tree" test in t7814 work when
GIT_TEST_FATAL_REGISTER_SUBMODULE_ODB is true.

Up until recently, object IDs did not have an algorithm member, only a
hash. Consequently, it was possible to share one null (all-zeros)
object ID among all hash algorithms. Now that we're going to be
handling objects from multiple hash algorithms, it's important to make
sure that all object IDs have a correct algorithm field.
Introduce a per-algorithm null OID, and add it to struct hash_algo.
Introduce a wrapper function as well, and use it everywhere we used to
use the null_oid constant.

hashmap_free(), hashmap_free_entries(), and hashmap_free_() have existed
for a while, but aren't necessarily the clearest names, especially with
hashmap_partial_clear() being added to the mix and lazy-initialization
now being supported. Peff suggested we adopt the following names[1]:
- hashmap_clear() - remove all entries and de-allocate any
hashmap-specific data, but be ready for reuse
- hashmap_clear_and_free() - ditto, but free the entries themselves
- hashmap_partial_clear() - remove all entries but don't deallocate
table
- hashmap_partial_clear_and_free() - ditto, but free the entries
This patch provides the new names and converts all existing callers over
to the new naming scheme.

In "fetch", there are two parameters submodule_fetch_jobs_config and
recurse_submodules that can be set in a variety of ways: through
.gitmodules, through .git/config, and through the command line.
Currently "fetch" handles this by first reading .gitmodules, then
reading .git/config (allowing it to overwrite existing values), then
reading the command line (allowing it to overwrite existing values).
Notice that we can avoid reading .gitmodules if .git/config and/or the
command line already provides us with what we need. In addition, if
recurse_submodules is found to be "no", we do not need the value of
submodule_fetch_jobs_config.
Avoiding reading .gitmodules is especially important when we use "git
fetch" to perform lazy fetches in a partial clone because the
.gitmodules file itself might need to be lazy fetched (and otherwise
causing an infinite loop).
In light of all this, avoid reading .gitmodules until necessary. When
reading it, we may only need one of the two parameters it provides, so
teach fetch_config_from_gitmodules() to support NULL arguments. With
this patch, users (including Git itself when invoking "git fetch" to
lazy-fetch) will be able to guarantee avoiding reading .gitmodules by
passing --recurse-submodules=no.

We return the length to a subset of a string using an "int *"
out-parameter. This is fine most of the time, as we'd expect config keys
to be relatively short, but it could behave oddly if we had a gigantic
config key. A more appropriate type is size_t.
Let's switch over, which lets our callers use size_t as appropriate
(they are bound by our type because they must pass the out-parameter as
a pointer). This is mostly just a cleanup to make it clear this code
handles long strings correctly. In practice, our config parser already
chokes on long key names (because of a similar int/size_t mixup!).
When doing an int/size_t conversion, we have to be careful that nobody
was trying to assign a negative value to the variable. I manually
confirmed that for each case here. They tend to just feed the result to
xmemdupz() or similar; in a few cases I adjusted the parameter types for
helper functions to make sure the size_t is preserved.

Before the changes to teach git_config_source to remember scope
information submodule-config.c never needed to consider the question of
config scope. Even though zeroing out git_config_source is still
correct and preserved the previous behavior of setting the scope to
CONFIG_SCOPE_UNKNOWN, it's better to be explicit about such situations
by explicitly setting the scope. As none of the current config_scope
enumerations make sense we create CONFIG_SCOPE_SUBMODULE to describe the
situation.

Currently, submodule-config.c doesn't have an externally accessible
function to read gitmodules only if it wasn't already read. But this
exact behavior is internally implemented by gitmodules_read_check(), to
perform a lazy load. Let's merge this function with
repo_read_gitmodules() adding a 'skip_if_read' which allows both
internal and external callers to access this functionality. This
simplifies a little the code. The added option will also be used in
the following patch.

Since ac1fbbda2013 (submodule: do not copy unknown update mode from
.gitmodules, 2013-12-02), Git has been careful to avoid copying
[submodule "foo"]
update = !run an arbitrary scary command
from .gitmodules to a repository's local config, copying in the
setting 'update = none' instead. The gitmodules(5) manpage documents
the intention:
The !command form is intentionally ignored here for security
reasons
Unfortunately, starting with v2.20.0-rc0 (which integrated ee69b2a9
(submodule--helper: introduce new update-module-mode helper,
2018-08-13, first released in v2.20.0-rc0)), there are scenarios where
we *don't* ignore it: if the config store contains no
submodule.foo.update setting, the submodule-config API falls back to
reading .gitmodules and the repository-supplied !command gets run
after all.
This was part of a general change over time in submodule support to
read more directly from .gitmodules, since unlike .git/config it
allows a project to change values between branches and over time
(while still allowing .git/config to override things). But it was
never intended to apply to this kind of dangerous configuration.
The behavior change was not advertised in ee69b2a9's commit message
and was missed in review.
Let's take the opportunity to make the protection more robust, even in
Git versions that are technically not affected: instead of quietly
converting 'update = !command' to 'update = none', noisily treat it as
an error. Allowing the setting but treating it as meaning something
else was just confusing; users are better served by seeing the error
sooner. Forbidding the construct makes the semantics simpler and
means we can check for it in fsck (in a separate patch).
As a result, the submodule-config API cannot read this value from
.gitmodules under any circumstance, and we can declare with confidence
For security reasons, the '!command' form is not accepted
here.

Since these macros already take a `keyvar' pointer of a known type,
we can rely on OFFSETOF_VAR to get the correct offset without
relying on non-portable `__typeof__' and `offsetof'.
Argument order is also rearranged, so `keyvar' and `member' are
sequential as they are used as: `keyvar->member'

While we cannot rely on a `__typeof__' operator being portable
to use with `offsetof'; we can calculate the pointer offset
using an existing pointer and the address of a member using
pointer arithmetic for compilers without `__typeof__'.
This allows us to simplify usage of hashmap iterator macros
by not having to specify a type when a pointer of that type
is already given.
In the future, list iterator macros (e.g. list_for_each_entry)
may also be implemented using OFFSETOF_VAR to save hackers the
trouble of using container_of/list_entry macros and without
relying on non-portable `__typeof__'.

`hashmap_free_entries' behaves like `container_of' and passes
the offset of the hashmap_entry struct to the internal
`hashmap_free_' function, allowing the function to free any
struct pointer regardless of where the hashmap_entry field
is located.
`hashmap_free' no longer takes any arguments aside from
the hashmap itself.

C compilers do type checking to make life easier for us. So
rely on that and update all hashmap_entry_init callers to take
"struct hashmap_entry *" to avoid future bugs while improving
safety and readability.

Since 76e9bdc437 (submodule: support reading .gitmodules when it's not
in the working tree - 2018-10-25), every time you do
git grep --recurse-submodules
you are likely to see one warning line per submodule (unless all those
submodules also have submodules). On a superproject with plenty of
submodules (I've seen one with 67) this is really annoying.
The warning was there because we could not resolve extended SHA-1
syntax on a submodule. We can now. Make use of the new API and get rid
of the warning.
It would be even better if config_with_options() supports multiple
repositories too. But one step at a time.

When the .gitmodules file is not available in the working tree, try
using the content from the index and from the current branch. This
covers the case when the file is part of the repository but for some
reason it is not checked out, for example because of a sparse checkout.
This makes it possible to use at least the 'git submodule' commands
which *read* the gitmodules configuration file without fully populating
the working tree.
Writing to .gitmodules will still require that the file is checked out,
so check for that before calling config_set_in_gitmodules_file_gently.
Add a similar check also in git-submodule.sh::cmd_add() to anticipate
the eventual failure of the "git submodule add" command when .gitmodules
is not safely writeable; this prevents the command from leaving the
repository in a spurious state (e.g. the submodule repository was cloned
but .gitmodules was not updated because
config_set_in_gitmodules_file_gently failed).
Moreover, since config_from_gitmodules() now accesses the global object
store, it is necessary to protect all code paths which call the function
against concurrent access to the global object store. Currently this
only happens in builtin/grep.c::grep_submodules(), so call
grep_read_lock() before invoking code involving
config_from_gitmodules().
Finally, add t7418-submodule-sparse-gitmodules.sh to verify that reading
from .gitmodules succeeds and that writing to it fails when the file is
not checked out.
NOTE: there is one rare case where this new feature does not work
properly yet: nested submodules without .gitmodules in their working
tree. This has been documented with a warning and a test_expect_failure
item in t7814, and in this case the current behavior is not altered: no
config is read.

Introduce a new config_set_in_gitmodules_file_gently() function to write
config values to the .gitmodules file.
This is in preparation for a future change which will use the function
to write to the .gitmodules file in a more controlled way instead of
using "git config -f .gitmodules".
The purpose of the change is mainly to centralize the code that writes
to the .gitmodules file to avoid some duplication.
The naming follows git_config_set_in_file_gently() but the git_ prefix
is removed to communicate that this is not a generic git-config API.

We recently banned submodule urls that look like
command-line options. This is the matching change to ban
leading-dash paths.
As with the urls, this should not break any use cases that
currently work. Even with our "--" separator passed to
git-clone, git-submodule.sh gets confused. Without the code
portion of this patch, the clone of "-sub" added in t7417
would yield results like:

Fetched in submodule path '-sub', but it did not contain b56243f8f4eb91b2f1f8109452e659f14dd3fbe4. Direct fetching of that commit failed.
Moreover, naively adding such a submodule doesn't work:
$ git submodule add $url -sub
The following path is ignored by one of your .gitignore files:
-sub
even though there is no such ignore pattern (the test script
hacks around this with a well-placed "git mv").
Unlike leading-dash urls, though, it's possible that such a
path _could_ be useful if we eventually made it work. So
this commit should be seen not as recommending a particular
policy, but rather temporarily closing off a broken and
possibly dangerous code-path. We may revisit this decision
later.
There are two minor differences to the tests in t7416 (that
covered urls):
1. We don't have a "./-sub" escape hatch to make this
work, since the submodule code expects to be able to
match canonical index names to the path field (so you
are free to add submodule config with that path, but we
would never actually use it, since an index entry would
never start with "./").
2. After this patch, cloning actually succeeds. Since we
ignore the submodule.*.path value, we fail to find a
config stanza for our submodule at all, and simply
treat it as inactive. We still check for the "ignoring"
message.

The previous commit taught the submodule code to invoke our
"git clone $url $path" with a "--" separator so that we
aren't confused by urls or paths that start with dashes.
However, that's just one code path. It's not clear if there
are others, and it would be an easy mistake to add one in
the future. Moreover, even with the fix in the previous
commit, it's quite hard to actually do anything useful with
such an entry. Any url starting with a dash must fall into
one of three categories:
- it's meant as a file url, like "-path". But then any
clone is not going to have the matching path, since it's
by definition relative inside the newly created clone. If
you spell it as "./-path", the submodule code sees the
"/" and translates this to an absolute path, so it at
least works (assuming the receiver has the same
filesystem layout as you). But that trick does not apply
for a bare "-path".
- it's meant as an ssh url, like "-host:path". But this
already doesn't work, as we explicitly disallow ssh
hostnames that begin with a dash (to avoid option
injection against ssh).
- it's a remote-helper scheme, like "-scheme::data". This
_could_ work if the receiver bends over backwards and
creates a funny-named helper like "git-remote--scheme".
But normally there would not be any helper that matches.
Since such a url does not work today and is not likely to do
anything useful in the future, let's simply disallow them
entirely. That protects the existing "git clone" path (in a
belt-and-suspenders way), along with any others that might
exist.
Our tests cover two cases:
1. A file url with "./" continues to work, showing that
there's an escape hatch for people with truly silly
repo names.
2. A url starting with "-" is rejected.
Note that we expect case (2) to fail, but it would have done
so even without this commit, for the reasons given above.
So instead of just expecting failure, let's also check for
the magic word "ignoring" on stderr. That lets us know that
we failed for the right reason.

This is the flip side of the previous two patches: checking
for a non-zero oidcmp() can be more strictly expressed as
inequality. Like those patches, we write "!= 0" in the
coccinelle transformation, which covers by isomorphism the
more common:
if (oidcmp(E1, E2))
As with the previous two patches, this patch can be achieved
almost entirely by running "make coccicheck"; the only
differences are manual line-wrap fixes to match the original
code.
There is one thing to note for anybody replicating this,
though: coccinelle 1.0.4 seems to miss the case in
builtin/tag.c, even though it's basically the same as all
the others. Running with 1.0.7 does catch this, so
presumably it's just a coccinelle bug that was fixed in the
interim.

The underlying config parser knows how to handle a
config_options struct, but git_config_from_mem() always
passes NULL. Let's allow our callers to specify the options
struct.
We could add a "_with_options" variant, but since there are
only a handful of callers, let's just update them to pass
NULL.

Reuse config_from_gitmodules in repo_read_gitmodules to remove some
duplication and also have a single point where the .gitmodules file is
read.
The change does not introduce any new behavior, the same gitmodules_cb
config callback is still used, which only deals with configuration
specific to submodules.
The check about the repo's worktree is removed from repo_read_gitmodules
because it's already performed in config_from_gitmodules.
The config_from_gitmodules function is moved up in the file —unchanged—
before its users to avoid a forward declaration.

Add a helper function to make it clearer that retrieving 'update-clone'
configuration from the .gitmodules file is a special case supported
solely for backward compatibility purposes.
This change removes one direct use of 'config_from_gitmodules' for
options not strictly related to submodules: "submodule.fetchjobs" does
not describe a property of a submodule, but a behavior of other commands
when dealing with submodules, so it does not really belong to the
.gitmodules file.
This is in the effort to communicate better that .gitmodules is not to
be used as a mechanism to store arbitrary configuration in the
repository that any command can retrieve.

Submodule "names" come from the untrusted .gitmodules file,
but we blindly append them to $GIT_DIR/modules to create our
on-disk repo paths. This means you can do bad things by
putting "../" into the name (among other things).
Let's sanity-check these names to avoid building a path that
can be exploited. There are two main decisions:
1. What should the allowed syntax be?
It's tempting to reuse verify_path(), since submodule
names typically come from in-repo paths. But there are
two reasons not to:
a. It's technically more strict than what we need, as
we really care only about breaking out of the
$GIT_DIR/modules/ hierarchy. E.g., having a
submodule named "foo/.git" isn't actually
dangerous, and it's possible that somebody has
manually given such a funny name.
b. Since we'll eventually use this checking logic in
fsck to prevent downstream repositories, it should
be consistent across platforms. Because
verify_path() relies on is_dir_sep(), it wouldn't
block "foo\..\bar" on a non-Windows machine.
2. Where should we enforce it? These days most of the
.gitmodules reads go through submodule-config.c, so
I've put it there in the reading step. That should
cover all of the C code.
We also construct the name for "git submodule add"
inside the git-submodule.sh script. This is probably
not a big deal for security since the name is coming
from the user anyway, but it would be polite to remind
them if the name they pick is invalid (and we need to
expose the name-checker to the shell anyway for our
test scripts).
This patch issues a warning when reading .gitmodules
and just ignores the related config entry completely.
This will generally end up producing a sensible error,
as it works the same as a .gitmodules file which is
missing a submodule entry (so "submodule update" will
barf, but "git clone --recurse-submodules" will print
an error but not abort the clone.
There is one minor oddity, which is that we print the
warning once per malformed config key (since that's how
the config subsystem gives us the entries). So in the
new test, for example, the user would see three
warnings. That's OK, since the intent is that this case
should never come up outside of malicious repositories
(and then it might even benefit the user to see the
message multiple times).

concept from which the test script was adapted goes to

This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less
overwhelming to read.
In particular, this moves:
- read_object_file
- oid_object_info
- write_object_file
As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h.
In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to
compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever
identifiers from the header are used. That can happen later
when we have better tooling for it.

This continues the story of bf12fcdf5e (submodule-config: store
the_submodule_cache in the_repository, 2017-06-22).
The previous patch taught submodule_from_path to take a repository into
account, such that submodule_from_{path, cache} are the same now.
Remove submodule_from_cache, migrating all its callers to
submodule_from_path.

This enables submodule_from_{name, path} to handle arbitrary repositories.
All callers just pass in the_repository, a later patch will pass in other
repos.
While at it remove the extern key word from the declarations.

At some point we may want to rename the function so that it describes what
it actually does as 'submodule_free' doesn't quite describe that this
clears a repository's submodule cache. But that's beyond the scope of
this series.

Convert read_sha1_file to take a pointer to struct object_id and rename
it read_object_file. Do the same for read_sha1_file_extended.
Convert one use in grep.c to use the new function without any other code
change, since the pointer being passed is a void pointer that is already
initialized with a pointer to struct object_id. Update the declaration
and definitions of the modified functions, and apply the following
semantic patch to convert the remaining callers:

Many uses of comparision callback function the hashmap API uses
cast the callback function type when registering it to
hashmap_init(), which defeats the compile time type checking when
the callback interface changes (e.g. gaining more parameters).
The callback implementations have been updated to take "void *"
pointers and cast them to the type they expect instead.

The only difference between these is that the former takes an argument
`name` which it ignores completely. Still, the callers are quite careful
to provide reasonable values for it.
Once in-flight topics have landed, we should be able to remove
git_config_maybe_bool. In the meantime, document it as deprecated in the
technical documentation. While at it, document git_parse_maybe_bool.

In order to use the submodule-config subsystem, callers first need to
initialize it by calling 'repo_read_gitmodules()' or
'gitmodules_config()' (which just redirects to
'repo_read_gitmodules()'). There are a couple of callers who need to
load an explicit revision of the repository's .gitmodules file (grep) or
need to modify the .gitmodules file so they would need to load it before
modify the file (checkout), but the majority of callers are simply
reading the .gitmodules file present in the working tree. For the
common case it would be nice to avoid the boilerplate of initializing
the submodule-config system before using it, so instead let's perform
lazy-loading of the submodule-config system.
Remove the calls to reading the gitmodules file from ls-files to show
that lazy-loading the .gitmodules file works.

The '.gitmodules' file should only contain information pertinent to
configuring individual submodules (name to path mapping, URL where to
obtain the submodule, etc.) while other configuration like the number of
jobs to use when fetching submodules should be a part of the
repository's config.
Remove the 'submodule.fetchjobs' configuration option from the general
submodule-config parsing and instead rely on using the
'config_from_gitmodules()' in order to maintain backwards compatibility
with this config being placed in the '.gitmodules' file.

When using the hashmap a common need is to have access to caller provided
data in the compare function. A couple of times we abuse the keydata field
to pass in the data needed. This happens for example in patch-ids.c.
This patch changes the function signature of the compare function
to have one more void pointer available. The pointer given for each
invocation of the compare function must be defined in the init function
of the hashmap and is just passed through.
Documentation of this new feature is deferred to a later patch.
This is a rather mechanical conversion, just adding the new pass-through
parameter. However while at it improve the naming of the fields of all
compare functions used by hashmaps by ensuring unused parameters are
prefixed with 'unused_' and naming the parameters what they are (instead
of 'unused' make it 'unused_keydata').

Similar to b33a15b08 (push: add recurseSubmodules config option,
2015-11-17) and 027771fcb1 (submodule: allow erroneous values for the

that is later used to parse whether we are interested in updating
submodules.
We need the `die_on_error` parameter to be able to call this parsing
function for the config file as well, which if incorrect lets Git die.

Commit 959b5455 (submodule: implement a config API for lookup of
.gitmodules values, 2015-08-18) implemented the initial version of the
submodule config cache. During development of that initial version we
extracted the function gitmodule_sha1_from_commit(). During that process
we missed that the strbuf rev was still used in config_from() and now is
left empty. Lets fix this by also returning this string.
This means that now when reading .gitmodules from revisions, the error
messages also contain a reference to the blob they are from.

Introduced in 473166b ("config: add 'origin_type' to config_source
struct", 2016-02-19), Git can inform the user about the origin of a
config error, but the implementation does not allow translators to
translate the keywords 'file', 'blob, 'standard input', and
'submodule-blob'. Moreover, for the second message, a reason for the
error is appended to the message, not allowing translators to translate
that reason either.
Unfold the message into several templates for each known origin_type.
That would result in better translation at the expense of code
verbosity.
Add enum config_oringin_type to ease management of the various
configuration origin types (blob, file, etc). Previously origin type
was considered from command line if cf->origin_type == NULL, i.e.,
uninitialized. Now we set origin_type to CONFIG_ORIGIN_CMDLINE in
git_config_from_parameters() and configset_add_value().
For error message in git_parse_source(), use xstrfmt() function to
prepare the message string, instead of doing something like it's done
for die_bad_number(), because intelligibility and code conciseness are
improved for that instance.

hashcpy with null_sha1 as the source is equivalent to hashclr. In
addition to being simpler, using hashclr may give the compiler a chance
to optimize better. Convert instances of hashcpy with the source
argument of null_sha1 to hashclr.

The hashmap API provides hashmap_iter_first() helper for initialion
and getting the first entry of a hashmap. Let's use it instead of

Currently submodule.<name>.update is only handled by git-submodule.sh.
C code will start to need to make use of that value as more of the
functionality of git-submodule.sh moves into library code in C.
Add the update field to 'struct submodule' and populate it so it can
be read as sm->update or from sm->update_command.

The --recurse-submodules command line parameter has existed for some
time but it has no config file equivalent.
Following the style of the corresponding parameter for git fetch, let's
invent push.recurseSubmodules to provide a default for this
parameter. This also requires the addition of --recurse-submodules=no to
allow the configuration to be overridden on the command line when
required.
The most straightforward way to implement this appears to be to make
push use code in submodule-config in a similar way to fetch.

Many components in if/else if/... cascade jumped to a shared
clean-up with "goto release_return", but we can restructure the
function a bit and make them disappear, which reduces the line count
as well. Also reformat overlong lines and poorly indented ones
while at it.
The order of rules to verify the value for "ignore" used to be to
complain on multiple values first and then complain to boolean, but
swap the order to match how the values for "path" and "url" are
verified.

We should not die when reading the submodule config cache since the
user might not be able to get out of that situation when the
configuration is part of the history.
We should handle this condition later when the value is about to be
used.

We remove the extracted functions and directly parse into and read out
of the cache. This allows us to have one unified way of accessing
submodule configuration values specific to single submodules. Regardless
whether we need to access a configuration from history or from the
worktree.

In a superproject some commands need to interact with submodules. They
need to query values from the .gitmodules file either from the worktree
of from certain revisions. At the moment this is quite hard since a
caller would need to read the .gitmodules file from the history and then
parse the values. We want to provide an API for this so we have one
place to get values from .gitmodules from any revision (including the
worktree).
The API is realized as a cache which allows us to lazily read
.gitmodules configurations by commit into a runtime cache which can then
be used to easily lookup values from it. Currently only the values for
path or name are stored but it can be extended for any value needed.
It is expected that .gitmodules files do not change often between
commits. Thats why we lookup the .gitmodules sha1 from a commit and then
either lookup an already parsed configuration or parse and cache an
unknown one for each sha1. The cache is lazily build on demand for each
requested commit.
This cache can be used for all purposes which need knowledge about
submodule configurations. Example use cases are:
* Recursive submodule checkout needs to lookup a submodule name from
its path when a submodule first appears. This needs be done before
this configuration exists in the worktree.
* The implementation of submodule support for 'git archive' needs to
lookup the submodule name to generate the archive when given a
revision that is not checked out.
* 'git fetch' when given the --recurse-submodules=on-demand option (or
configuration) needs to lookup submodule names by path from the
database rather than reading from the worktree. For new submodule it
needs to lookup the name from its path to allow cloning new
submodules into the .git folder so they can be checked out without
any network interaction when the user does a checkout of that
revision.
