2025-03-12refs/iterator: separate lifecycle from iterationPatrick Steinhardt1-0/+1
The ref and reflog iterators have their lifecycle attached to iteration: once the iterator reaches its end, it is automatically released and the caller doesn't have to care about that anymore. When the iterator should be released before it has been exhausted, callers must explicitly abort the iterator via `ref_iterator_abort()`. This lifecycle is somewhat unusual in the Git codebase and creates two problems: - Callsites need to be very careful about when exactly they call `ref_iterator_abort()`, as calling the function is only valid when the iterator itself still is. This leads to somewhat awkward calling patterns in some situations. - It is impossible to reuse iterators and re-seek them to a different prefix. This feature isn't supported by any iterator implementation except for the reftable iterators anyway, but if it was implemented it would allow us to optimize cases where we need to search for specific references repeatedly by reusing internal state. Detangle the lifecycle from iteration so that we don't deallocate the iterator anymore once it is exhausted. Instead, callers are now expected to always call a newly introduce `ref_iterator_free()` function that deallocates the iterator and its internal state. Note that the `dir_iterator` is somewhat special because it does not implement the `ref_iterator` interface, but is only used to implement other iterators. Consequently, we have to provide `dir_iterator_free()` instead of `dir_iterator_release()` as the allocated structure itself is managed by the `dir_iterator` interfaces, as well, and not freed by `ref_iterator_free()` like in all the other cases. While at it, drop the return value of `ref_iterator_abort()`, which wasn't really required by any of the iterator implementations anyway. Furthermore, stop calling `base_ref_iterator_free()` in any of the backends, but instead call it in `ref_iterator_free()`. 2023-02-16dir-iterator: drop unused `DIR_ITERATOR_FOLLOW_SYMLINKS`Taylor Blau1-4/+2
The `FOLLOW_SYMLINKS` flag was added to the dir-iterator API in fa1da7d2ee (dir-iterator: add flags parameter to dir_iterator_begin, 2019-07-10) in order to follow symbolic links while traversing through a directory. `FOLLOW_SYMLINKS` gained its first caller in ff7ccc8c9a (clone: use dir-iterator to avoid explicit dir traversal, 2019-07-10), but it was subsequently removed in 6f054f9fb3 (builtin/clone.c: disallow `--local` clones with symlinks, 2022-07-28). Since then, we've held on to the code for `DIR_ITERATOR_FOLLOW_SYMLINKS` in the name of making minimally invasive changes during a security embargo. In fact, we even changed the dir-iterator API in bffc762f87 (dir-iterator: prevent top-level symlinks without FOLLOW_SYMLINKS, 2023-01-24) without having any non-test callers of that flag. Now that we're past those security embargo(s), let's finalize our cleanup of the `DIR_ITERATOR_FOLLOW_SYMLINKS` code and remove its implementation since there are no remaining callers. 2019-08-07test-dir-iterator: use path argument directlyRené Scharfe1-3/+1
Avoid allocating and leaking a strbuf for holding a verbatim copy of the path argument and pass the latter directly to dir_iterator_begin() instead. Signed-off-by: René Scharfe <l.s.r@web.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2019-07-30test-dir-iterator: do not assume errno valuesJunio C Hamano1-1/+10
A few tests printed 'errno' as an integer and compared with hardcoded integers; this is obviously not portable. A two things to note are: - the string obtained by strerror() is not portable, and cannot be used for the purpose of these tests. - there unfortunately isn't a portable way to map error numbers to error names. As we only care about a few selected errors, just map the error number to the name before emitting for comparison. Reported-by: Randall S. 2019-07-11dir-iterator: add flags parameter to dir_iterator_beginMatheus Tavares1-7/+27
Add the possibility of giving flags to dir_iterator_begin to initialize a dir-iterator with special options. Currently possible flags are: - DIR_ITERATOR_PEDANTIC, which makes dir_iterator_advance abort immediately in the case of an error, instead of keep looking for the next valid entry; - DIR_ITERATOR_FOLLOW_SYMLINKS, which makes the iterator follow symlinks and include linked directories' contents in the iteration. These new flags will be used in a subsequent patch. Also add tests for the flags' usage and adjust refs/files-backend.c to the new dir_iterator_begin signature. 2019-07-11dir-iterator: refactor state machine modelMatheus Tavares1-0/+5
dir_iterator_advance() is a large function with two nested loops. Let's improve its readability factoring out three functions and simplifying its mechanics. The refactored model will no longer depend on level.initialized and level.dir_state to keep track of the iteration state and will perform on a single loop. Also, dir_iterator_begin() currently does not check if the given string represents a valid directory path. Since the refactored model will have to stat() the given path at initialization, let's also check for this kind of error and make dir_iterator_begin() return NULL, on failures, with errno appropriately set. And add tests for this new behavior. Improve documentation at dir-iteration.h and code comments at dir-iterator.c to reflect the changes and eliminate possible ambiguities. Finally, adjust refs/files-backend.c to check for now possible dir_iterator_begin() failures. 2019-07-11dir-iterator: add tests for dir-iterator APIDaniel Ferreira1-0/+33
Create t/helper/test-dir-iterator.c, which prints relevant information about a directory tree iterated over with dir-iterator. Create t/t0066-dir-iterator.sh, which tests that dir-iterator does iterate through a whole directory tree as expected.
