I have installed the OpenJDK 10 JRE on my PureOS system with:

$ sudo apt install default-jre
$ java --version
openjdk 10.0.2 2018-07-17
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 10.0.2+13-Debian-1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0.2+13-Debian-1, mixed mode)

I am now trying to download and run Apache Directory Studio per the install docs:

Apache Directory Studio requires at least:

  • a recent Linux distribution. It has been tested successfully on Ubuntu and Arch Linux.
  • Java Runtime Environment 7 or later.

[Click the "ApacheDirectoryStudio" file]

But I get an error in ~/.ApacheDirectoryStudio/.metadata/.log (below). A preliminary search suggests this kind of error might indicate a compatibility problem with my JRE. How can I get ADS running with my JRE?

It appears it does not support Java 10. As per the Apache own FAQ on Apache directory Studio:

Studio requires Java 7 or Java 8 (recommended). Java 9 is not yet supported.

You need to install the OpenJDK 8 JRE:

sudo apt install openjdk-8-jre

And, since you already have OpenJDK 10 installed, modify ApacheDirectoryStudio.ini:

...
-vm
/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/bin/java
-vmargs
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.8

You will now be able to click on the ApacheDirectoryStudio file and launch the application.
