MVC Regex to validate Email

Question

I'm trying tro write a Regex validation rule for MVC parameters, in this case the parameter is "email" and the rule I have for it is : ^[A-z0-9_.@]*$

The problem with the rule - that thinks this: "marty\invalid_at_gmail.com" is VALID

I need it to forbid "\" in the param

The point beeing - that I need to eliminate "\" from the parameter. It might be a simple "userName" or "email". The parameter is being passed as URL param, and both email and username areunique user identifiers. And I need a regex to match both, either a simple string (without a backslash) or a email (without a backslash) — Marty

To answer your question: A-z is a mistake, it should be A-Za-z. Look at your ASCII table - \ is between upper case A and lower case z — Kobi

In your model, you can use EmailAddressAttribute:

[EmailAddress]
string UserMail { get; set; }

If you are using jQuery validation, it may end up using its regex for emails on the client-side.

the only reason to validate email id would be to correct any misspells like [email protected]..EmailAddressAttribute is redundant!

I've just read an article with the following (Perl) regex for validation. In short, using regex to validate email according to rfc is probably short-sighted.

Validating email with ^[A-z0-9_.@]*$ doesn't gurantee valid email address..[email protected] would match with that regex but is that email id valid.NO

Your regex should be ^[^@]+@[^@]+$ and then to check if it's valid send a mail to that email address..If you receive response email is valid!

In case you want to prevent users from making mispells you can use mailcheck.js

Ha.. the problem with my string was - that is used A-z (cappital and lowercase) All that i needed was to replace it with a-zA-Z to fit my needs

This is the pattern of the explanation : ^[\w-\._\+%]+@(?:[\w-]+\.)+[\w]{2,6}$ Also you can use it if you want :)

what i want to say is validating emails with above regex doesn't gurantee that the email is valid..What if user enters [email protected] instead of [email protected]..Your regex would match it!

@Anirudh - Since we are being pedant - sending a mail and getting a response (or a link click) from the user does not guarantee it is "valid" - only that it was valid at some point. Still, you can help the user and guess email@g probably isn't valid.
