I am developing a webapp with JSF 2.2 and hibernate the app works fine, but if I don't use in X hours when I try logged in to the app, it throws this exception:

There is no problem in your code. This is a problem where your client connection to the db server times out. Just add the following lines in your .cfg file.

<property name="hibernate.dbcp.maxWait">-1</property> 
<property name="hibernate.dbcp.maxIdle">-1</property> 
<property name="hibernate.dbcp.validationQuery">select 1</property> 
<property name="hibernate.dbcp.testOnBorrow">true</property>

You can google the meaning of each property. The key here is to have a validationQuery to check if you are still connected to the db server. If not, then create a new connection.

what if we not using DBCP Connection pool ? then these configurations will not have influence in the code.
