I am currently getting the error:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'null'.

When trying to get a token from Asp.net web api. This only happens on Azure and not any other server. Even when running the site locally connecting to the database on Azure there are no issues. It seems like it is trying to create a database for some reason and does not have the permission for it.

  • This actually sounds like the connection string may be wrong or completely missing. Can you take a look at your deployment wizard and look in the 'settings' section? There should be a few options on how the connection string is updated in the remote system. It is likely you are not updating the remote config with your local settings. Got it! Very strange but I had to go into the Azure portal -> App Services-> {My App}->Application Settings

There is a setting there for Connection Strings. The connection string had a value null for User ID. I changed it to my regular connection string and now it works fine.

This was my first time deploying to azure. I did not realize that the changes I was making to my web.config, like I would of in previous deployments, were not being referenced. This helped me solve this!

In my case using the Entity Framework with VS 2017 and IIS8.

I solved this error by doing the ff:

  1. Go to MSSQL Management Studio
  2. [Your Server] -> [Databases] folder -> [Security] folder -> [Logins] folder
  3. Right click [NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM] -> [Properties] -> [Server Roles]
  4. Check [Public] and [sysadmin]
  5. Restart website in IIS
