I extracted the following code from jquery.validate plugin, it is really quite hard to understand this. I want to convert them to PHP and it is better that you can help me understand every piece of the following regular expression codes.

Validate email address:

/^((([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&'*+-/=\?\^_{\|}~]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])+(\.([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&'\*\+\-/=\?\^_{\|}~]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])+))|((\x22)((((\x20|\x09)(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(([\x01-\x08\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x1f\x7f]|\x21|[\x23-\x5b]|[\x5d-\x7e]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(\([\x01-\x09\x0b\x0c\x0d-\x7f]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯]))))(((\x20|\x09)(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(\x22)))@((([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])*([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯]))).)+(([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])*([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯]))).?$/i

Validate url address:

/^(https?|ftp)://(((([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(%[\da-f]{2})|[!\$&'()*+,;=]|:)*@)?(((\d|[1-9]\d|1\d\d|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5]).(\d|[1-9]\d|1\d\d|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5]).(\d|[1-9]\d|1\d\d|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5]).(\d|[1-9]\d|1\d\d|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5]))|((([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])*([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯]))).)+(([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯]))).?)(:\d)?)(/((([a-z]|\d|-|.||~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(%[\da-f]{2})|[!\$&'()*+,;=]|:|@)+(/(([a-z]|\d|-|.||~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(%[\da-f]{2})|[!\$&'()*+,;=]|:|@)))?)?(\?((([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(%[\da-f]{2})|[!\$&'()*+,;=]|:|@)|[-]|/|\?)*)?(#((([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(%[\da-f]{2})|[!\$&'()*+,;=]|:|@)|/|\?)*)?$/i

There's one place especially confuses me. Isn't (\x22) character B? Why doesn't it just say B? Why 0x22 is useful in email address validation anyway?

Thanks.

Update: I modified it to PHP code,

$pattern = "/^((([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&'*+-/=\?\^_{\|}~]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])+(\.([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&'\*\+\-/=\?\^_{\|}~]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])+))|((\x22)((((\x20|\x09)(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(([\x01-\x08\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x1f\x7f]|\x21|[\x23-\x5b]|[\x5d-\x7e]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])|(\([\x01-\x09\x0b\x0c\x0d-\x7f]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}]))))(((\x20|\x09)(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(\x22)))@((([a-z]|\d|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])|(([a-z]|\d|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])*([a-z]|\d|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}]))).)+(([a-z]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])|(([a-z]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])([a-z]|\d|-|.|_|~|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])*([a-z]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}]))).?\$/u"; preg_match($pattern, "[email protected]");

It says,

Warning: preg_match(): Compilation failed: unmatched parentheses at offset 406 in xxx on line 7.

I couldn't allocate where's the parentheses miss match. I tried counting every parenthesis and they looks ok. And offset 406 doesn't contain parentheses.

It wouldn't be a good/safe idea to take a Javascript function and just copy the expression from there. As far as i know \u and \x are UTF-8 escape codes, which might be useful for JS but not as useful in your PHP condition.

There are plenty of great solutions for validating an e-mail address and URL's , here's a couple i've fetched from Google.

E-mail: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9585

URL: PHP validation/regex for URL

Good luck and hope this helps,
Shai.

You are wrong in your last statement, \x22 is " in both ASCII and Unicode.

thanks. But i still have no idea on why they use so many \x and \u here.
