2018-07-23ACPI: property: graph: Update graph documentation to use generic referencesSakari Ailus2-30/+36
Instead of port and endpoint properties for representing ports and endpoints, use the keys of the hierarchical data extension references when referring to the port and endpoint nodes. Additionally, use "reg" properties as in Device Tree to specify the number of the port or the endpoint. The keys of the port nodes begin with "port" and the keys of the endpoint nodes begin with "endpoint", both followed by "@" character and the number of the port or the endpoint. These changes have the advantage that no ACPI specific properties need to be added to refer to non-device nodes. Additionally, using the name of the node instead of an integer property inside the node is easier to parse in code and easier for humans to understand. 2017-10-11ACPI / LPIT: Add Low Power Idle Table (LPIT) supportSrinivas Pandruvada1-0/+25
Add functionality to read LPIT table, which provides: - Sysfs interface to read residency counters via /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuidle/low_power_idle_cpu_residency_us /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuidle/low_power_idle_system_residency_us Here the count "low_power_idle_cpu_residency_us" shows the time spent by CPU package in low power state. This is read via MSR interface, which points to MSR for PKG C10. Here the count "low_power_idle_system_residency_us" show the count the system was in low power state. This is read via MMIO interface. This is mapped to SLP_S0 residency on modern Intel systems. This residency is achieved only when CPU is in PKG C10 and all functional blocks are in low power state. It is possible that none of the above counters present or anyone of the counter present or all counters present. For example: On my Kabylake system both of the above counters present. After suspend to idle these counts updated and prints: 6916179 6998564 This counter can be read by tools like turbostat to display. Or it can be used to debug, if modern systems are reaching desired low power state. - Provides an interface to read residency counter memory address This address can be used to get the base address of PMC memory mapped IO. This is utilized by intel_pmc_core driver to print more debug information. In addition, to avoid code duplication to read iomem, removed the read of iomem from acpi_os_read_memory() in osl.c and made a common function acpi_os_read_iomem(). This new function is used for reading iomem in in both osl.c and acpi_lpit.c. This reverts commit ecb10b694b72ca5ea51b3c90a71ff2a11963425a. The only expected ACPI control method lid device's usage model is 1. Listen to the lid notification, 2. Evaluate _LID after being notified by BIOS, 3. Suspend the system (if users configure to do so) after seeing "close". It's not ensured that BIOS will notify OS after boot/resume, and it's not ensured that BIOS will always generate "open" event upon opening the lid. But there are 2 wrong usage models: 1. When the lid device is responsible for suspend/resume the system, userspace requires to see "open" event to be paired with "close" after the system is resumed, or it will suspend the system again. 2. When an external monitor connects to the laptop attached docks, userspace requires to see "close" event after the system is resumed so that it can determine whether the internal display should remain dark and the external display should be lit on. After we made default kernel behavior to be suitable for usage model 1, users of usage model 2 start to report regressions for such behavior change. Reversion of button.lid_init_state=method doesn't actually reverts to old default behavior as doing so can enter a regression loop, but facilitates users to work the reported regressions around with button.lid_init_state=method. GPIO hogging means that the GPIO controller can "hog" and configure certain GPIOs without need for a driver or userspace to do that. Make it possible to have an empty GPIOs in a GPIO list for device. For example a SPI master may use both GPIOs and native pins as chip selects and we need to be able to distinguish between the two. This makes it mandatory to have exactly 3 arguments for GPIOs and then converts gpiolib to use of __acpi_node_get_property_reference() instead. This patch allows SSDTs to be loaded from EFI variables. It works by specifying the EFI variable name containing the SSDT to be loaded. All variables with the same name (regardless of the vendor GUID) will be loaded. Note that we can't use acpi_install_table and we must rely on the dynamic ACPI table loading and bus re-scanning mechanisms. That is because I2C/SPI controllers are initialized earlier then the EFI subsystems and all I2C/SPI ACPI devices are enumerated when the I2C/SPI controllers are initialized. 2016-04-18ACPI / tables: Convert initrd table override to table upgrade mechanismLv Zheng1-26/+39
This patch converts the initrd table override mechanism to the table upgrade mechanism by restricting its usage to the tables released with compatibility and more recent revision. This use case has been encouraged by the ACPI specification: 1. OEMID: An OEM-supplied string that identifies the OEM. 2. OEM Table ID: An OEM-supplied string that the OEM uses to identify the particular data table. This field is particularly useful when defining a definition block to distinguish definition block functions. OEM assigns each dissimilar table a new OEM Table Id. 3. OEM Revision: An OEM-supplied revision number. Larger numbers are assumed to be newer revisions. For OEMs, good practices will ensure consistency when assigning OEMID and OEM Table ID fields in any table. The intent of these fields is to allow for a binary control system that support services can use. Because many support function can be automated, it is useful when a tool can programatically determine which table release is a compatible and more recent revision of a prior table on the same OEMID and OEM Table ID. The facility can now be used by the vendors to upgrade wrong tables for bug fixing purpose, thus lockdep disabling taint is not suitable for it and it should be a default 'y' option to implement the spec encouraged use case. Note that, by implementing table upgrade inside of ACPICA itself, it is possible to remove acpi_table_initrd_override() and tables can be upgraded by acpi_install_table() automatically. Though current ACPICA impelentation hasn't implemented this, this patched changes the table flag setting timing to allow this to be implemented in ACPICA without changing the code here. 2015-10-25i2c: add ACPI support for I2C mux portsDustin Byford1-0/+58
Although I2C mux devices are easily enumerated using ACPI (_HID/_CID or device property compatible string match), enumerating I2C client devices connected through an I2C mux needs a little extra work. This change implements a method for describing an I2C device hierarchy that includes mux devices by using an ACPI Device() for each mux channel along with an _ADR to set the channel number for the device. See Documentation/acpi/i2c-muxes.txt for a simple example. To make this work the ismt, i801, and designware pci/platform devs now share an ACPI companion with their I2C adapter dev similar to how it's done in OF. This is done on the assumption that power management functions will not be called directly on the I2C dev that is sharing the ACPI node. The common usage -- embedding pointers to acpi_device_id arrays in other data structures -- reference them as 'const', e.g. as in struct acpi_driver / acpi_scan_handler / device_driver. The matchers are taking const pointers, too. So it's only natural, to propose using const arrays. Change the documentation accordingly. Previously we were only able to use integer index to find the corresponding GPIO, which is pretty error prone if the order changes. If an MFD device is backed by ACPI namespace, we should allow subdevice drivers to access their corresponding ACPI companion devices through normal means (e.g using ACPI_COMPANION()). This patch adds such support to the MFD core. If the MFD parent device does not specify any ACPI _HID/_CID for the child device, the child device will share the parent ACPI companion device. Otherwise the child device will be assigned with the corresponding ACPI companion, if found in the namespace below the parent. When I added support for ACPI5 I made the assumption that injected processor errors would just need to know the APICID, memory errors just the address and mask, and PCIe errors just the segment/bus/device/function. So I had the code check the type of injection and multiplex the "param1" value appropriately. This was not a good assumption :-( There are injection scenarios where we need to specify more than one of these items. E.g. injecting a cache error we need to specify an APICID of the cpu that owns the cache, and also an address (so that we can trip the error by accessing the address). Add a "flags" file to give the user direct access to specify which items are valid in the ACPI SET_ERROR_TYPE_WITH_ADDRESS structure. Also add new files param3 and param4 to hold all these values. For backwards compatability with old injection scripts we maintain the old behaviour if flags remains set at zero (or is reset to 0). Acked-by: Naveen N. 2013-11-22ACPI / scan: Add acpi_device objects for all device nodes in the namespaceRafael J. Wysocki1-8/+1
Modify the ACPI namespace scanning code to register a struct acpi_device object for every namespace node representing a device, processor and so on, even if the device represented by that namespace node is reported to be not present and not functional by _STA. There are multiple reasons to do that. First of all, it avoids quite a lot of overhead when struct acpi_device objects are deleted every time acpi_bus_trim() is run and then added again by a subsequent acpi_bus_scan() for the same scope, although the namespace objects they correspond to stay in memory all the time (which always is the case on a vast majority of systems). Second, it will allow user space to see that there are namespace nodes representing devices that are not present at the moment and may be added to the system. It will also allow user space to evaluate _SUN for those nodes to check what physical slots the "missing" devices may be put into and it will make sense to add a sysfs attribute for _STA evaluation after this change (that will be useful for thermal management on some systems). Next, it will help to consolidate the ACPI hotplug handling among subsystems by making it possible to store hotplug-related information in struct acpi_device objects in a standard common way. Finally, it will help to avoid a race condition related to the deletion of ACPI namespace nodes. Namely, namespace nodes may be deleted as a result of a table unload triggered by _EJ0 or _DCK. If a hotplug notification for one of those nodes is triggered right before the deletion and it executes a hotplug callback via acpi_hotplug_execute(), the ACPI handle passed to that callback may be stale when the callback actually runs. One way to work around that is to always pass struct acpi_device pointers to hotplug callbacks after doing a get_device() on the objects in question which eliminates the use-after-free possibility (the ACPI handles in those objects are invalidated by acpi_scan_drop_device(), so they will trigger ACPICA errors on attempts to use them). 2013-08-23i2c: move ACPI helpers into the coreMika Westerberg1-12/+3
This follows what has already been done for the DeviceTree helpers. Move the ACPI helpers from drivers/acpi/acpi_i2c.c to the I2C core and update documentation accordingly. I2C of helpers used to live in of_i2c.c but experience (from SPI) shows that it is much cleaner to have this in the core. This also removes a circular dependency between the helpers and the core, and so we can finally register child nodes in the core instead of doing this manually in each driver. To me, the most significant change is the addition of offline/online device operations to the driver core (with the Greg's blessing) and the related modifications of the ACPI core hotplug code. Next are the freezer updates from Colin Cross that should make the freezing of tasks a bit less heavy weight. We also have a couple of regression fixes, a number of fixes for issues that have not been identified as regressions, two new drivers and a bunch of cleanups all over. Highlights: - Hotplug changes to support graceful hot-removal failures. It sometimes is necessary to fail device hot-removal operations gracefully if they cannot be carried out completely. For example, if memory from a memory module being hot-removed has been allocated for the kernel's own use and cannot be moved elsewhere, it's desirable to fail the hot-removal operation in a graceful way rather than to crash the kernel, but currenty a success or a kernel crash are the only possible outcomes of an attempted memory hot-removal. Needless to say, that is not a very attractive alternative and it had to be addressed. However, in order to make it work for memory, I first had to make it work for CPUs and for this purpose I needed to modify the ACPI processor driver. It's been split into two parts, a resident one handling the low-level initialization/cleanup and a modular one playing the actual driver's role (but it binds to the CPU system device objects rather than to the ACPI device objects representing processors). That's been sort of like a live brain surgery on a patient who's riding a bike. So this is a little scary, but since we found and fixed a couple of regressions it caused to happen during the early linux-next testing (a month ago), nobody has complained. As a bonus we remove some duplicated ACPI hotplug code, because the ACPI-based CPU hotplug is now going to use the common ACPI hotplug code. - Lighter weight freezing of tasks. These changes from Colin Cross and Mandeep Singh Baines are targeted at making the freezing of tasks a bit less heavy weight operation. They reduce the number of tasks woken up every time during the freezing, by using the observation that the freezer simply doesn't need to wake up some of them and wait for them all to call refrigerator(). The time needed for the freezer to decide to report a failure is reduced too. Also reintroduced is the check causing a lockdep warining to trigger when try_to_freeze() is called with locks held (which is generally unsafe and shouldn't happen). - cpufreq updates First off, a commit from Srivatsa S Bhat fixes a resume regression introduced during the 3.10 cycle causing some cpufreq sysfs attributes to return wrong values to user space after resume. The fix is kind of fresh, but also it's pretty obvious once Srivatsa has identified the root cause. Second, we have a new freqdomain_cpus sysfs attribute for the acpi-cpufreq driver to provide information previously available via related_cpus. From Lan Tianyu. Finally, we fix a number of issues, mostly related to the CPUFREQ_POSTCHANGE notifier and cpufreq Kconfig options and clean up some code. The majority of changes from Viresh Kumar with bits from Jacob Shin, Heiko Stübner, Xiaoguang Chen, Ezequiel Garcia, Arnd Bergmann, and Tang Yuantian. - ACPICA update A usual bunch of updates from the ACPICA upstream. During the 3.4 cycle we introduced support for ACPI 5 extended sleep registers, but they are only supposed to be used if the HW-reduced mode bit is set in the FADT flags and the code attempted to use them without checking that bit. That caused suspend/resume regressions to happen on some systems. Fix from Lv Zheng causes those registers to be used only if the HW-reduced mode bit is set. Apart from this some other ACPICA bugs are fixed and code cleanups are made by Bob Moore, Tomasz Nowicki, Lv Zheng, Chao Guan, and Zhang Rui. - cpuidle updates New driver for Xilinx Zynq processors is added by Michal Simek. Multidriver support simplification, addition of some missing kerneldoc comments and Kconfig-related fixes come from Daniel Lezcano. - ACPI power management updates Changes to make suspend/resume work correctly in Xen guests from Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk, sparse warning fix from Fengguang Wu and cleanups and fixes of the ACPI device power state selection routine. - ACPI documentation updates Some previously missing pieces of ACPI documentation are added by Lv Zheng and Aaron Lu (hopefully, that will help people to uderstand how the ACPI subsystem works) and one outdated doc is updated by Hanjun Guo. - Assorted ACPI updates We finally nailed down the IA-64 issue that was the reason for reverting commit 9f29ab11ddbf ("ACPI / scan: do not match drivers against objects having scan handlers"), so we can fix it and move the ACPI scan handler check added to the ACPI video driver back to the core. A mechanism for adding CMOS RTC address space handlers is introduced by Lan Tianyu to allow some EC-related breakage to be fixed on some systems. A spec-compliant implementation of acpi_os_get_timer() is added by Mika Westerberg. The evaluation of _STA is added to do_acpi_find_child() to avoid situations in which a pointer to a disabled device object is returned instead of an enabled one with the same _ADR value. From Jeff Wu. Intel BayTrail PCH (Platform Controller Hub) support is added to the ACPI driver for Intel Low-Power Subsystems (LPSS) and that driver is modified to work around a couple of known BIOS issues. Changes from Mika Westerberg and Heikki Krogerus. The EC driver is fixed by Vasiliy Kulikov to use get_user() and put_user() instead of dereferencing user space pointers blindly. Code cleanups are made by Bjorn Helgaas, Nicholas Mazzuca and Toshi Kani. - Assorted power management updates The "runtime idle" helper routine is changed to take the return values of the callbacks executed by it into account and to call rpm_suspend() if they return 0, which allows us to reduce the overall code bloat a bit (by dropping some code that's not necessary any more after that modification). The runtime PM documentation is updated by Alan Stern (to reflect the "runtime idle" behavior change). New trace points for PM QoS are added by Sahara (<keun-o.park@windriver.com>). There is a new generic API to get a DMA channel for a slave device (commit 9a6cecc8 "dmaengine: add helper function to request a slave DMA channel"). In similar fashion to the DT case (commit aa3da644 "of: Add generic device tree DMA helpers") we introduce helpers to the DMAC drivers which are enumerated by ACPI. The proposed extension provides the following API calls: acpi_dma_controller_register(), devm_acpi_dma_controller_register() acpi_dma_controller_free(), devm_acpi_dma_controller_free() acpi_dma_simple_xlate() acpi_dma_request_slave_chan_by_index() acpi_dma_request_slave_chan_by_name() The first two should be used, for example, at probe() and remove() of the corresponding DMAC driver. At the register stage the DMAC driver supplies a custom xlate() function to translate a struct dma_spec into struct dma_chan. Accordingly to the ACPI Fixed DMA resource specification the only two pieces of information the slave device has are the channel id and the request line (slave id). Those two are represented by struct dma_spec. The acpi_dma_request_slave_chan_by_index() provides access to the specifix FixedDMA resource by its index. Whereas dma_request_slave_channel() takes a string parameter to identify the DMA resources required by the slave device. To make a slave device driver work with both DeviceTree and ACPI enumeration a simple convention is established: "tx" corresponds to the index 0 and "rx" to the index 1. In case of robust configuration the slave device driver unfortunately needs to call acpi_dma_request_slave_chan_by_index() directly. Additionally the patch provides "managed" version of the register/free pair i.e. devm_acpi_dma_controller_register() and devm_acpi_dma_controller_free(). Usually, the driver uses only devm_acpi_dma_controller_register(). Instead of open-coding ACPI GPIO resource lookup in each driver, we provide a helper function analogous to Device Tree version that allows drivers to specify which GPIO resource they are interested (using an index to the GPIO resources). The function then finds out the correct resource, translates the ACPI GPIO number to the corresponding Linux GPIO number and returns that. Introduce struct acpi_scan_handler for representing objects that will do configuration tasks depending on ACPI device nodes' hardware IDs (HIDs). Currently, those tasks are done either directly by the ACPI namespace scanning code or by ACPI device drivers designed specifically for this purpose. None of the above is desirable, however, because doing that directly in the namespace scanning code makes that code overly complicated and difficult to follow and doing that in "special" device drivers leads to a great deal of confusion about their role and to confusing interactions with the driver core (for example, sysfs directories are created for those drivers, but they are completely unnecessary and only increase the kernel's memory footprint in vain). But now, we found it will cause issue (memory overwriting) for some BIOS. The AER error information printing support is implemented in drivers/pci/pcie/aer/aer_print.c. So some string constants, functions and macros definitions can be re-used without being exported. The original PCIe AER error information printing function is not re-used directly because the overall format is quite different. And changing the original printing format may make some original users' scripts broken. In APEI, Hardware error information reported by firmware to Linux kernel is in the data structure of APEI generic error status (struct acpi_hes_generic_status). While now printk is used by Linux kernel to report hardware error information to user space. So, this patch adds printing support for the data structure, so that the corresponding hardware error information can be reported to user space via printk. PCIe AER information printing is not implemented yet. Will refactor the original PCIe AER information printing code to avoid code duplicating. Introduce module parameter acpi.aml_debug_output. With acpi.aml_debug_output set, we can get AML debug object output (Store (AAA, Debug)), even with CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG cleared. Together with the runtime custom method mechanism, we can debug AML code problems without rebuilding the kernel. Some hardware error injection needs parameters, for example, it is useful to specify memory address and memory address mask for memory errors. Some BIOSes allow parameters to be specified via an unpublished extension. This patch adds support to it. The parameters will be ignored on machines without necessary BIOS support. Introduce a new debugfs I/F (/sys/kernel/debug/acpi/custom_method) for ACPI, which can be used to customize the ACPI control methods at runtime. We can use this to debug the AML code level bugs instead of overriding the whole DSDT table, without rebuilding/rebooting kernel any more. This essentially reverts commit 71fc47a9adf8ee89e5c96a47222915c5485ac437 ("ACPI: basic initramfs DSDT override support"), because the code simply isn't ready. It did ugly things to the init sequence to populate the rootfs image early, but that just ended up showing other problems with the whole approach. The fact is, the VFS layer simply isn't initialized this early, and the relevant ACPI code should either run much later, or this shouldn't be done at all. For 2.6.25, we'll just pick the latter option. We can revisit this concept later if necessary. The basics of DSDT from initramfs. In case this option is selected, populate_rootfs() is called a bit earlier to have the initramfs content available during ACPI initialization. This is a very similar path to the one available at http://gaugusch.at/kernel.shtml but with some update in the documentation, default set to No and the change of populate_rootfs() the "Jeff Mahony way" (which avoids reading the initramfs twice).
