I am having trouble parsing elements properly from an xml file (see xml snippet below) and converting them into a csv.

The csv file has columns for eventType, probableCause, alarmName, shortName (ACAT, AC etc), and longName (ACTangent, ACODE, etc)

similar idea to this:

enter image description here

At the moment, I can only get it to start parsing information from the alarm, but I would like it to start from the very beginning. How can I extract the family longName in one column and the family shortName in another column for every single log and alarm?

Please let me know if any clarification is needed.

UPDATE

I am having trouble parsing data in this manner for another XML file: enter image description here

For the first column, I would like to get the general name tag (recordingSystem, Ports, etc) and concatenate it with the subNames in the row tags (closedFileCount, processedFileCount, etc)

The problem I noticed is that the tag where the subName is located keeps changing, it could be a "usage", "lwGuage", "hwGauge" and so on. I also need to collect those and put it in the column beside it.

Please see the sample XML below:

The trick is to pass the family info down to the children as you recurse

def recurse(root, family):
    for child in root:
        if child.tag == '{urn:nortel:namespaces:mcp:faults}family':
            family = child
        recurse(child, family)
    for event in root.findall('{urn:nortel:namespaces:mcp:faults}alarm'):
        if family:
            event_data = [family.attrib.get('longName',''), family.attrib.get('shortName', '')]
        else:
            event_data ['','']

recurse(root,  None)

A more generic approach is to pass a dictionary down, but watch out, changes to the dictionary will bubble up, so you better copy the dictionary before modifying it:

from copy import copy

def recurse(root, props):
    for child in root:
        if child.tag == '{urn:nortel:namespaces:mcp:faults}family':
            p2 = copy(props)
            p2['shortName'] = child.attrib.get('shortName','')
            p2['longName'] = child.attrib.get('longName', '')
            recurse(child, p2)
        else:
            recurse(child, props)
    for event in root.findall('{urn:nortel:namespaces:mcp:faults}alarm'):

        event_data = [props.get('longName',''), props.get('shortName', '')]

recurse(root,{})

I'm a bit confused, will this populate the shortName and longName columns? I can't seem to get it to work without errors.
Either approach should put longName and shortName in the first two positions of the event_data array, so they should come out as the first two columns when you append to it and write it out. - What kind of errors are you getting?
It seems that I'm incorrectly putting the new code into the original code. How should I add it properly?
should replace from def recurse(root): to event_data = [] the recurse(root,{}) needs to go at the end replacing recurse(root)
You could contract out to me to do the work ;-) but essentially, just repeat the code in the for event in root.findall('{urn:nortel:namespaces:mcp:faults}alarm'): just below this loop at the same level but for for event in root.findall('{urn:nortel:namespaces:mcp:faults}log'):
